ARIZONA WOMEN’S BILLIARD TOUR Sixshooters Sept.6-7, 2003

Sixshooters hosted the AWBT bar box event on September 6 & 7. Normally when a new member joins the tour, they have to work their way through the player ranking to get to first place. One usually needs some table time to develop their skill and learn to work out those tournament jitters, get some seasoning, and of course, pay their due respect to those in the ranking above them.
HAH! That’s what new member Virginia Jennings said to all that bunk. She came in and blew through the field, except for an early loss to Susan Mello, nearly taking down the tournament. Through the one-loss bracket Jennings took wins over Su Carter(5-0), Marney Teague(5-0), Liz Bernreuter(5-2), Dawn Anderson(5-1), Meiko Yamanobe(5-4), and Marita Incalcaterra(5-4). This took her to the final match heads up against the lady who sent her to the one-loss bracket in the first place… Mello.
Mello’s trek to the hot seat must have felt more like a stroll in the park…. she only lost a total of 3 games in 5 matches!!! As they set out to play, Jennings let Mello get a taste of her own medicine and won the first set (5-2). Giving Mello more losses in one game than she’d had the entire tourney! NOW it was time for the final final match. This was a true double elimination tourney and Jennings would have to win another match in order to claim victory. Mello brought out the extra strength doses for the last match though and took the win.
The top 8 ladies playing on Sunday with no losses were: Dawn Anderson, Marita Incalcaterra, Susan Mello, and Susan Williams, with one-loss; Liz Bernreuter, Natalie Hostler, Virginia Jennings, and Meiko Yamanobe. This turned out to be a fantastic tournament. There were some exciting newcomers to the top 8 field for Sunday: Dawn Anderson, Natalie Hostler and the previously mentioned Virginia Jennings. Watch for them in upcoming events. Also, congratulations to Marita Incalcaterra for best finish to date at 3rd place.
A big Thank You to Elmer , the manager at Sixshooters. He was so helpful in ensuring the success of this tournament and bringing the AWBT back to the Northwest Valley. He was there until the wee hours on Sunday watching the breaking action for the finals of the Main event and Second chance, a true supporter of the sport.
Final Results of the Main Event:
2nd Chance Event Déjà vu in the Second Chance Event ! I’ve seen it once; I’ve seen it twice. The finals of the 2nd chance mirrored the main event. Jodie Villegas came from the one-loss side and beat Margie Stephanik in the first match. Then in the final final match Margie took home the win.
