Even though Saturday, October 21st was a cloudy, rainy day, the sun was shining at the newly opened Sixshooters located at Desert Sky Mall. Sixshooters was picked to host the AWBT 9-Ball State Championship and WPBA qualifier. Total attendance was 53 ladies, making this the largest showing in the history of the AWBT. Joining the AZ ladies were one gal from Taiwan, one from New York and five women from California.
It was a long hard day of play with the winner's side racing to 7 and the one loss side racing to 5. By 11:30 that night the final eight competing in Sundays final match were as follows; On the winner's side was Kristin Haney, Jean Vaillancourt, Liz Bernreuter and Traci Thomas. For the one loss side, Nina Tagley, Angelina Paglia, Susan Mello and Marney Teague.
After the 1st round on Sunday it was determined that Susan and Marney would finish in 7th/8th place. After the 2nd round we found Jean and Traci in 5th/6th place. This left Nina, Kristin, Angelina and Liz to fight for the crown. Liz and Kristin met up for the hot seat while Angelina played Nina in a hill-hill match. The match placed Nina in a strong 4th place finish. The match between Kristin and Liz was a strenuous battle going back and forth with Liz being the victor and placing her in the hot seat. Kristin left the match to face our 1999 State Champion, Angelina Paglia in a race to 5 games. With 3 balls left in a hill-hill match, Angelina showed us why she was the 1999 State Champ. Kristin finished the day in an honorable 3rd place. Angelina went on to meet our New York gal, Liz Bernreuter in the final match.
Angelina found her zone and won the 1st match, which was a race to 7 leaving the next match a true double elimination race to 5. With a record number of members in attendance we also had a large spectator crowd who were ready to cheer both girls on. Liz played hard but Angelina's experience paid off and she recaptured her title to become the 2000 AWBT 9-Ball State Champ. Congratulations to Liz on finishing 2nd in her first AWBT event.
And winning a pro spot event and her 2nd consecutive championship...
Congratulations Angelina Paglia!
Also on Sunday we had our 2nd chance tournament with another great showing of 27 girls. The 5th/6th place winners were Janet Redenius and Anje Anderson. Fourth place went to Debbie Straatmeyer, and Third to Lee Ann Smith with second place going to Linda McBride. Our winner of the 2nd chance tournament Yung-Yi Yan was one of our new members to the AWBT and the US. She has traveled from Tiawan to the United States to play in the WBPA qualifiers. Congratulations Yung-Yi and good luck.
