Season V Finale A Rousing Success!

Season V concluded with a bang -- one of the largest turnout of players to date. Fifty ladies came to play Saturday at Lazy Q in Gilbert for Season V's finale and a WPBA qualifier spot. Lazy Q added $1,500.00 to the prize money and the AWBT provided the prepaid WPBA qualifier spot.

Of the fifty participants, six were new members (1 each from England, Japan and British Columbia and 3 from California) with eight members renewing their previous membership. Sunday dawned with eight players in the main event and twenty-one for the Second Chance Event. When all the dust settled in the main event, 7/8 places were held by Stacy Hurst and Marney Teague - each place paying $89.00; 5/6 by Madelyn Roberts and Melissa Morris - $152.00 each; 4th - Susan Mello - for $229.00; 3rd - Jenny Lee - for $330.00; 2nd - Ikumi Ushiroda of Aichi City, Japan - for $457.00; and, 1st - Kim Shaw of Kingston, England - $635.00 and a prepaid WPBA event spot. Our Second Chance winners are: 1st - Liz Bernreuter ($95.00); 2nd - Meiko Yamanobe-Pollard ($59.00); 3rd - Carol Webb ($36.00); and 4th - Sara Miller ($21.00).

Kim Shaw is formerly of Kingston, England but based this year out of Port Charlotte, Florida. In Kingston she is a courier, but planned and saved in order to take a year off to tour the US playing in WPBA qualifier tournaments. At the end of the year, if she doesn't feel she was successful or does not have sponsorship backing to continue either as a member of the WPBA or touring the US playing WPBA qualifiers, she plans to go back to her job in Kingston.

Ikumi Ushiroda is a 25 year old young lady with poise and charm - and a great game. As a matter of fact, Ikumi lost her first match to Stacy Hurst and battled all the way back through the B Side to meet Kim Shaw in the final match. While she does not yet speak English fluently, over the past 18 months, she has gained a measure of confidence to allow her to travel to the US without a translator. Ikumi flew to California on Friday and then drove to Arizona with Jenny Lee, one of our California members. Our own Meiko Yamanobe-Pollard talked with Ikumi to make certain she understood all that was going on.

Rick Morris won the drawing for the Graffitti Cue by Bilancia valued at $1,175.00. Good going, Rick.

Our thanks, again, to Randy and his staff for their efforts in making the tournament at Lazy Q a success.
