BCA Open 9-Ball Championships |
It was a hard fought match from the beginning as tournament director Steve Tipton had to measure to determine the winner of the lag just as he did in the men's semi-finals. After Johnny was declared the winner of the lag, he broke and pushed out, George San Souci passed the shot back to Johnny who made a legal hit on the object ball and made another ball. From that position, Johnny ran out to go ahead 1-0. A foul on a jump shot by San Souci in game 2 allowed Johnny to run out the second game for a 2-0 lead. Johnny made a ball and then scratched on a bank shot on the 1-ball to allow San Souci to run out the third rack and come back within 1 game at 1-2. No less that 5 safeties in a row were shot in the 1-ball in game 4 before San Souci was left a shot and ran out to even the score. A costly scratch on the break in game 5 allowed Johnny to run out this rack and the next to forge ahead 4-2 but a miss on the 2-ball in game 7 allowed San Souci to run out and get back within 1 game again at 3-4. After George played safe on the 3-ball in game 8, Johnny missed the ball and George ran out to knot the score at 4 all. George broke the 9th rack and was left with a very difficult table but he methodically ran out to take his first lead of the match at 5-4 but with the 8-ball and 9-ball tied up in game 10, George was left with a long tough cut on the 8 which he missed to allow Johnny to tie the score again at 5 all. A scratch on a jumo shot attempt by Johnny in game 11 was the opportunity George needed to regain the lead at 6-5 but after breaking the 12th rack, George was left with a long cut shot on the 1 which George tried but missed. That was the last George saw of the table as Johnny ran that rack to even the match once again at 6 all and then proceeded to break and run out the last 3 racks to win the event and the $15,000 first prize. |
