Jeremy Jones Racks Up His First Camel Title And Takes The Lead In The $300,000 Point Standings

Atlanta-Jeremy Jones of Jacksonville, FL defeated Johnny Archer of Atlanta 11-10 in a suspenseful final of the Mr. Cue’s II 9-Ball Shootout here Sunday for his first Camel title and the lead in the 1999 points race. Jones made his way to the final undefeated for the $15,000 payday.

Jones went to work at midnight on Wednesday after a first round bye and defeated an impressive list of players on his way to the final four. Jones’ hit list included Dennis Hatch, Buffalo, NY (11-7); Tang Hoa, Glendale, CA (11-7); Gerry Watson, Montreal, QUE (11-8) and Efren Reyes, Manila, Philippines (11-3). In final four action, Jones defeated defending Camel champion Francisco Bustamante, Keil, Germany 11-9 to face Archer in the final.

Archer, the hometown favorite, drew appreciative crowds as he took care of Jon Kucharo, Bettendorf, IA (11-8); Rick Van Uum, St. Louis, MO (11-0); Jeff Melton, Cookson, OK (11-8) and Mark Wilson, St. Louis, MO (11-7). Archer met Bustamante in a feature match Saturday at 8. Bustamante sent Archer into the one-loss 10:00 p.m. matches with an 11-8 defeat. Archer then defeated Alain Martel of Montreal, QUE 11-8 to advance to the final four.

Archer exacted his revenge on Bustamante Sunday after advancing past Reyes, 11-8. Archer defeated Bustamante 11-9 to set up the 4:00 p.m. final with Jones. Archer took second place and $7,500, along with 120 bonus points, giving him the second place spot in the points race for 1999.

The Camel Pro Billiards Series heads to Las Vegas next for The Riviera Hotel Pro 8-Ball Open, the third event of the season, Aug. 1-6. The Las Vegas stop will be held for the third consecutive year side-by-side with the APA National Team Championships in the new convention facility at the Riviera.
