Thursday February 1, 2001 The Derby City Classic moved into day 7 today with the 9-ball event fully underway. Some of the top 9-ball players arrived for the 9-ball event including US Open Champion and Mosconi Cup Team Captain Earl Strickland, former US Open Champion Tommy Kennedy, 'California' Kim Davenport and Billiards Congress of Wisconsin Champion Larry Nevel. One early round match that drew a lot of attention was Earl Strickland playing George 'Ginky' San Souci. Ginky held the lead 5-1 in the race to 7 format only to be forced to sit and watch as Earl ran out the set. By virtue of his win in the banks and high finish in the one pocket, Jose Parica is still the points leader in the $5,000 'All Around Champion' race, with 170 points. Close behind, however, is Buddy Hall at 120 and both Shannon Daulton and Corey Deuel at 100. Three of the four ladies competing in the event are already eliminated. Monica Webb and Nesli O'Hare lost 2 matches quickly and Helena Thornfeldt had the misfortune of drawing Johnny Archer in the first round. She lost that match and lost another later in the day to be eliminated. The only WPBA player still alive is Ming Ng who has still not lost a match. A number of players came back from 'The World's Largest Gaming Vessel', Caesars Indiana, as big winners. Notably, Grady Mathews came back a very big winner. Grady was seen leaving a table later after a match with 'The Assassin' from Russia, Evgeny Stalev. After that match, it was The Assassin who was the big winner for the day. |
