Monday January 29, 2001 The Derby City Classic moved into the second of it's three events today as the one pocket event got underway with 155 players competing for the title. Some early upsets saw Randy Epperson from Tampa, Fl defeat Mark Jarvis, Wade Crane over Jack Cooney and Keith McCready upsetting Jeremy Jones. Other favorites who are still undefeated include Defending Champion Nick Varner, Music City Champion Shannon Daulton, 9-Ball Bank winner Jose Parica, Senior Tour Player Danny Diliberto and The Professor Grady Mathews. The 9-ball bank event had 218 players and finished Sunday night with Jose Parica defeating Glenn "Piggy Bank" Rogers from Chicago in the finals to collect the $4,200 first prize while Rogers had to settle for $2,100 for second. This makes Parica the man to beat for the $5,000 'all-around Champion' bonus. Tournament action is not all that the fans are watching at this event where sweating the gambling action is half of the fun. Ronnie Allen was seen playing one handed one pocket getting 10-3 and the breaks from Cliff Joyner and getting 10-4 and the breaks from Jose Parica. Both Joyner and Parica left these matches a little lighter in the pockets. As if all this wasn't enough, there are also nightly mini tournaments going on. Jeff Clay defeated Santos Sambajon friday night in the 9-ball mini tourney finals to collect $800. Jose Parica continued his winning ways Saturday night by defeating Cliff Joyner in the finals of the mini one-pocket tourney and collected $650. Lexington All-Star Champion John Brumback defeated Richie Richeson Sunday night in the mini 9-Ball Bank tournament to collect $750. |
