A Better Option
One of the many reasons One Pocket is the most skilled game in my opinion is that you must be able to play all games well to ever be a great player. Which is why I've chosen this shot for this month.

As you can see, in diagram 1, even though I have a straight in shot on the 13 ball to my hole, it's not worth shooting because I can't get position. Instead, I would bank the 7 ball 1 rail toward my pocket with left hand english, sending my cue ball 3 rails. (diagram 2)

In this shot, since the bank shot is such a low percentage to make, the important thing is to control the cue ball. If you can do that then it's a great safe shot with nothing to lose, putting your opponent in a sticky situation.

When executed properly, your results should look something like diagram 3. From here you now have the 7 ball in play at the same time leaving your opponent no shot at his pocket.

While Gabe Owen's biggest title so far is definitely his 2004 US Open 9-Ball Championship win, Gabe is also one of the most knowledgeable One Pocket players in the game today.

Gabe has agreed to share some of that knowledge with one pocket fans here on AzBilliards with his new monthly column.
