![]() December 20, 2001 2001 Mosconi Cup Starts Today Over the next four days, the destination of team pool's most prestigious trophy will be determined in a series of titanic tussles at the fabled York Hall, Bethnal Green as Europe square up to the United States of America in the eighth running of the epic Mosconi Cup. Now sponsored by the Daily Star, Britain's fastest growing tabloid newspaper, the Mosconi Cup features two six-man teams playing a series of singles and doubles matches in front of pool's most enthusiastic supporters. There are a potential twenty three matches with all games a race to five racks with alternate breaks. It's one point for a win and the first team to twelve points will lift the trophy. With the Americans having dominated the event in its eight year history, there are many who believe that the time has come for a European victory, none more so than Steve Davis, who is hoping to emulate last year's performance when he finished top points scorer for the Europeans. Commented Steve, " We're ready to end the Americans' five year winning streak but it is going to be one almighty struggle. Our side have all had good years at this game and we are all playing well. Obviously the American side is packed with talent but it's no use worrying about them. If we concentrate and take our chances then I see no reason why the Kaiser won't be hoisting the cup on Sunday night." The event will be broadcast live in its entirety on Sky Sports in the UK as well as distributed around the world as a highlights package by promoters Matchroom Sport The Teams
