DAY 2

The double elimination stages were completed today, and tomorrow will see the commencement of single elimination with 16 boys, 8 girls and 8 wheelchair athletes making up the fields.

Wheelchair division:
Defending champion Henrik Larsson made short work of his two matches today to qualify himself into the single elimination stage. Larrson defeated Frederik Roussow 7/0, and Charlie Hans 7/3, thereby eliminating both these players from the competition.

Kurt Deklerck carried on (Belgium) his fine form from Day 1 when he defeated defending champion Henrik Larsson by beating Mark Jones  (USA) 7/4. Three time world champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) also put in a solid performance when he defeated Roy Kimberley (GBR) 7/3.

Fred Dinsmore played himself into the quarter finals when he defeated Charlie Hans 7/4, and Emil Schranz scraped in by the narrowest of margins 7/6 in beating local champion Jan Bothmas.

Girl’s division:
The girl from Taiwan, Zhi Thing Wu, looked well in control today in beating April Larson (USA) 6/3 and advancing to the quarter finals.  Also impressive was the Polish girl Kateryna Polovinchuk in accounting for her opponent Kayla Roloson of Canada 6/2. Defending champion Kamila Khodejava has saved herself from elimination and got entry into the quarter finals when today she beat both Juane David 6/3 and Julietta Block 6/4.

Boy’s division:
The boys start tomorrow with sixteen players for the single elimination stage. There were a few close matches today, but in the main most of the matches were won clearly. Aloysius Yapp of Singapore was very impressive, as was Pink Chung Ko of Taiwan. But they didn’t have it to themselves as Meshaal Al Ali of Qatar was blazing away with an easy 8/0 win over local Zander Kriel.

Brendan Crockett (USA) is in the loser’s side, but he also played steady and solid in defeating both Franco Kriel 8/2 and Gerson Bosa  8/7.
