Danny Hewitt Captures Initial Stan James Crown

Jim Wych and Danny Hewitt

Danny Hewitt destroyed Edwin Montal 11-1 to claim the first Stan James Canadian Nine Ball Tour championship. His victory over Mondal was all the more amazing because Mondal had just sent Canadian Nine Ball Champion Harold Rousseau over to the one-loss side with a similar 9-1 drubbing only hours before.

Hewitt played a near-flawless final set. Montal rarely rose from his chair. When he did approach the table it was to answer a safety with a kick that often fell short of the intended mark. With his victory Danny Hewitt now lays claim to the points race in Canada. The WPA has sanctioned this tour and is awarding points to finishers that will determine who represents Canada in international competitions such as the WPA World Nine Ball Championship.

Hewitt had to play six consecutive matches to claw his way through the loser's bracket and into the final round against Montal. On Sunday alone Hewitt faced down Jeff White (who finished third), Al Lougheed, Bob Chaperon, Martin Bracewell, and Erik Hjorliefson before getting his shot at the undefeated Edwin Montal.

Canadian Sports Hall of Fame member Cliff Thorburn finished fourth in the contest which was held at Pool Paradise in Waterloo, Ontario and was co-sponsored by Falcon Cues and Simonis Cloth. Title sponsor Stan James has opened a Canadian portal at Wych-Pagulayan.com to better serve its Canadian bookmaking clients.
