Canadian 9-Ball Championships underway

Paul Potier

Day 1 of the Canadian 9-Ball Championships has been completed. Two rounds on the A-side have been played and favourites Alex Pagulayan, Ron Wiseman, Alain Martel, Paul Potier, John Horsfall, Jeff Kennedy and Cliff Thorburn all remain undefeated. No one was eliminated on Friday night, but there are already unexpected casualties to the B-side. In Opening matches, Ed Galati lost to Jeff Kennedy and Danny Hewitt lost to Brad Poorman. Poorman then went on to lose to Kennedy 11-7 in the next round. Luc Salvas dropped his second round match to Gary Hauck from Alberta 11-10. Premier matches to start day 2 feature Paul Potier from British Columbia vs Chris Orme of Ontario, and on the B-side, Galati faces Hewitt, the loser to make an early exit.

In the Women's division, the field a 17 drew very few opening surprises. In the last match of the day, British Columbia's Maryann McConnell held an 8-5 lead over Quebec's Nathalie Jacob in a race to 9. Maryann, however, could not put Jacob away. Jacob played patiently and McConnell made a few mistakes, as Jacob pulled out the come from behind victory. In another late match featuring two New Brunswick women, Susan Stuart battled back only to jaw a 9 ball on the hill-hill game, allowing Lisa Gould to take the win. Round 2 will be highlighted by defending champion Catherine Garon against fellow Quebecer Chantal Vezina.
