Western Women’s Amateur Open Underway

Women from all over the Southwest and as far as Florida and Canada braved high winds, a huge storm, and an accident on the main highway leading into Payson, Arizona to play in the first Western Women's Amateur Open.

In picturesque Payson, primary sponsor the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino graciously opened its arms to the talented field. The activities began Thursday evening with a series of mini-tournaments in which a portion of the proceeds will be added to all raffle monies raised to benefit the Payson Habitat for Humanity.

While the field was smaller than anticipated, the 21 players include top names such as former BCA National Champion Bonnie Plowman, "Cherry Bomb" herself and well known pool and billiards personality Samm Diep, 2008 WPBA National Regional Tour Champion Susan Mello, former women's touring professional and former Canadian Snooker Champion Grace Nakamura, as well as WPBA regulars Susan Williams and Heather Lloyd.

The first round will commence today at noon where the players will be vying for a total purse of $5175, the largest payout for an independent women's amateur event. In addition to the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino, the event is being supported and sponsored by Diamond Billiard Products, Predator Cues, and Dale Teague Custom Cues.
