One-Pocket Continues at Derby

Francisco Bustamante

Day five of the 2011 Derby City Classic concluded with roughly 70 players remaining in the one-pocket event and half the field eliminated from the Fat Boy 10-Ball Challenge. Notable players still undefeated in the one-pocket are banks champ Alex Pagulayan and fourth place finisher Jeremy Jones, who are both currently in contention for the Master of the Table. “The Freezer” Scott Frost has not used his buy-back, along with Shane Van Boening and Shannon Daulton. Tomorrow's play continues at 10a.m. with round five.

The first round of the Fat Boy 10-Ball Challenge started this evening with a hill-hill battle between Van Boening and Ralf Souquet. This match saw several violent swings as Van Boening started off very confidently, jumping to a 7-2 lead. Twice, he broke in five balls and ran out. Souquet was struggling to make a ball on his breaks but still managed to tie up the score 10-10 before taking the lead. Eventually, at hill-hill, Souquet broke and scratched. Van Boening took the game and match with ball in hand.

The highlight of the evening came in the next Fat Boy match when Francisco Bustamante defeated Rafael Martinez 15-1. Bustamante put on a 10-ball exhibition for the fans at 4-1 when he broke and ran the next seven consecutive racks. He put on a near flawless performance which he later admitted shocked him. Bustamante will face the winner of Chris Bartram and Dennis Orcollo.

The high runs for today's straight pool challenge were Beau Runningen with 96, Alex Pagulayan with 81, and John Schmidt with a 73. The top three highest runs of the day receive $300, $200, and $100 for their efforts.

The one-pocket mini last night drew a full field of 32 players and wrapped up by 4a.m. $1,000 was added to this event courtesy of Albert and Marsha Metzinger, in loving memory of Marsha Metzinger. It drew an assortment of players from one-pocket veteran Cliff Joyner to Holland's Huidji See who finished fifth, to local favorite Shannon Murphy. Florida's Richie Richeson defeated Sam Monday in the finals to claim the $800.
