Spotlight On Billiards to Air on PBS Summer 2001

Move over, Pavarotti and make way for Billiards. The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) has entered into an agreement with TriVue Productions to produce a five-minute segment titled, Spotlight on Billiards that will air on PBS stations throughout the U.S. this summer. Mr. Stephen Ducoff, Executive Director of the BCA, comments, "We are very pleased to be partnering with PBS. The quality of PBS programming is first-class and their viewing audience allows us to reach people who enjoy the sport, but may not have picked up a cue recently. We want to educate people about the sport and remind them that it’s a great social and family activity."

In keeping with PBS guidelines, the segment will have an educational focus and concentrate on the many positive aspects of the sport and industry. "Pool is one of the top participatory sports and one that most people have played at one time or another in their lives," said Mr. Ducoff. "The sport is fun, exciting, social and doesn’t leave anyone out. It is an activity that has no socioeconomic boundaries and is played in homes, billiard rooms and community centers in every town in America." The theme and tone of Spotlight on Billiards will be tied closely to the BCA Image Campaign. The Image Campaign is a marketing initiative funded by the BCA with the goal of driving industry revenues by enhancing the image and broadening the appeal of billiards.

There is no set schedule for the segments, but rather each PBS station can choose when and how often to run the segment in between their feature programs. The segment is guaranteed to run at least 500 times with an expected audience of at least 3 million viewers. Viewership will be monitored the first three months to provide the BCA statistics on where and when the segment ran as well as the size of the viewing audience. The script for the segment is under development and airing is scheduled to begin in June of this year.
