2001 Admiral World Pool Championship
North of the border, Scotland's Mr Pool Ross McInnes won through against a strong field to secure a place in Group 10 where he will be up against the likes of Steve Knight and Ralf Souquet. This will be McInnes first visit to the World Championship. At the Stars and Stripes club in Bristol, five days of qualifying got underway yesterday. There are a total of ten spots up for grabs and the first went to 2000's surprise package Chris Melling. The 22 year-old Yorkshireman made it through the qualifiers last year and was eventually knocked out by top American Jon Kucharo in the last 32. Melling has been having an outstanding season at English 8-ball and will be a real dangerman at the CIA. Yesterday's second spot went to 21 year-old German player Thorsten Hohmann who will be making his World Championship debut. The Oliver Ortmann protégée will be celebrating his 22nd birthday on the opening day of the championship. Further qualifiers continue today. Tables for the World Championship are provided by Brunswick, cloth by Simonis, balls by Saluc and racks by Lou Sardo Products. The event's official bookmaker is Stan James. |
