2001 Admiral World Pool Championship

MATCHROOM SPORT are delighted to announce that Cardiff-based motor insurer, Admiral has become the title sponsor of the 2001 World Pool Championship which takes place at the Cardiff International Arena, Wales from Saturday 14th - Sunday 22nd July. This is the first time the company has sponsored the event, the largest pool tournament in the world and the event will officially be known as the 2001 Admiral World Pool Championship

With 128 players from 44 nations taking part, the 2001 Admiral World Pool Championship is the biggest international sporting event staged in the UK this year. The prize-money is up 20% on last year to US$300,000 ( approx £214,000 ) with this year's champion receiving US$65,000 (approx £46,000 ).

The Cold Faced Killer from Taipei, Mr Fong Pang Chao will be back to defend his championship but with the strongest field ever assembled under one roof, he will be up against it. Players from countries as diverse as Nicaragua, Indonesia and Hungary will be in attendance as well as the stars from pool's major league nations such as the USA, Germany, Philippines and Taiwan.

As in previous years, tickets for the Admiral World Pool Championship are free for the first seven days of the tournament and are available in person from the CIA Box Office or on 02920 224488.

The Admiral World Pool Championship is live in its entirety on Sky Sports in the UK and that adds up to over 60 hours of live coverage over the nine days. Such is the success of the Championship that it is also live on terrestrial TV in Canada and across Asia on ESPN Star who reach over 60 countries. In addition, the Admiral World Pool Championship is broadcast in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, the Middle East and across Europe as a highlights package.

Once again the tournament is sanctioned by the World Pool Association, the games governing body. For the thousands of pool hopefuls, there is a series of open qualifying events in Bristol starting on Sunday 8th July. Ten spots are up for grabs and it is a testimony to the pulling power of the event that over 100 players have already entered with 26 countries so far represented.
