Ears

Our story this time comes from 'San Jose' Dick McMoran. It seems Dick used to play in the mid 60's in a pool hall called Cochran's in San Francisco. One of the regulars was a player with the nickname of 'Ears' due to his huge resemblance to Dumbo.

'Ears' had a regular match with a rookie player by the name of Tom Randall every weekend for months. Although Tom was getting better as time went on, he had never beaten 'Ears' in a match. 'Ears' would change the game every time Tom started to get close to winning a match and Tom would inevitably lose again.

'Ears' had been playing for years and had pretty much reached the top of his game, which wasn't exactly 'world beater' level, but Tom was learning more and more and finally the unthinkable happened and Tom beat 'Ears' in a match.

As expected, 'Ears' went nuts and told Tom to bring 'at least a million' with him the next weekend and 'Ears' would win it all.

Well, the next weekend came and to everyone's surprise, 'Ears' was not there for his regular match with Tom. Tom didn't have to look for a game long and proceeded to lose his roll to someone else in the room and then went home.

Just a few minutes later, 'Ears' burst into the room looking all around for Tom. When he was told what happened, 'Ears' told everyone that he knew something like that would happen. They asked why he was late, and 'Ears' said his wife had passed away earlier that day, "I tried to make it to the pool hall as quick as I could, though."
