REPORT
John Higgins with the Stan James British Open trophy
Photograph © 110 Sport

JOHN Higgins has become the first player in the history of snooker to
win the first three events of the snooker season, as he defeated his
Scottish compatriot Graeme Dott 9-6 in the final of the 2001 Stan James
British Open at the Telewest Arena in the north-eastern English city of
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne to pocket a winner's check for almost $135,000, which
takes his earnings from the first seven weeks of the 2001-02 World Snooker
Main Tour Season to over $360,000.
It was Higgins's third British Open title in seven years adding to the titles
he won in 1995 and 1998, but the 26-year-old, who has been celebrating the
recent birth of his first child, was not his usual fluent self in the first
half of the first session as he continuenly failed to close out frames to
trail 3-1 going into the mid-session interval.
Higgins missed a red leading 48-0 in the first frame and Dott, who beat a
terribly below-par Ronnie O'Sullivan 6-4 in the semifinals, coolly cleared with
a break of 78 to take the opening frame.
Dott, the 24-year-old world number 14 from Glasgow in Scotland, cleared blue
to black to make it 2-0 after the next frame before Higgins fired in a break
of 79 to pull the next one back.
A break of 38 enabled Dott to regain his two-frame cushion, but at that point
he still appeared very nervous and missed a number of crucial balls that Higgins
just could not capitalize on.
However that frame would prove to be Dott's final frame success of the first
session, as when they returned from the mid-session interval Higgins moved up
a few gears to mop up the session's final four frames.
In the fifth frame Dott missed a red along the top cushion to leave Higgins to
score a break of 39 before missing a long pink. Though Dott could not
capitalize on the further chances he is presented with by the former Embassy
World Champion, and Higgins grabs the frame to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Higgins's superb break-building fluency was in evidence in frame seven as he
got in with an initial break of 44 before a bad split on the reds meant end of
break. Dott immediately goes in-off with the cue-ball and Higgins clinically
clears the table with a break of 90 to level the match.
A break of 61 in the next frame helped Higgins take the lead for the first time
in the match at 4-3, and a Higgins made it four frames in a row by taking the
final frame of the first session to hold a healthy 5-3 lead going into the
second session's play.
When the players returned for that second session's play to the roar of a huge
and enthusiastic crowd in the Telewest Arena, Higgins did not disappoint as he
took the opening frame helped by a break of 93 to extend his lead to 6-3.
It was a great time however for Dott to compile his highest break of the event
in the next frame as he coolly fired in a break of 100 to take frame-ten, and
then moved back to within one frame of Higgins as he took the next frame after
making a 42 break with Higgins replying with 45 and then missing a black off
its spot. Dott then took the frame clearing with 28 to the final pink.
Higgins's fourth century of the event, a break of 112, helped him secure the
twelfth frame, and errors by Dott in the next frame, such as missing a very
straightforward red, helped Higgins seal it with a 36 clearance.
A very scrappy fourteenth frame went Dott's way 75 points to 14, but when he
missed a tough final brown into the top right-hand pocket in the next, Higgins
cleared the final colors to the pink to seal victory it may not have
been vintage Higgins but no one could deny him his place in the history books.

"I said after winning the Regal Masters that life couldn't have got any
better but it has," Higgins remarked in collecting his fifteenth ranking title
victory.
"It wasn't a great final in terms of quality but Graeme tends to rough up the
table and that makes it harder.
"I think the key now is that I've got a boring life. I love being married,
I've got a new son and I don't spend all my time going out. I aim to carry on
being boring because it always worked for Davis and Hendry."
He continued: "It was a very tough match and a few bits of luck went my way.
"When I was 3-1 down I was feeling under so much pressure because everyone
was expecting me to win. It wasn't a high quality final by any means. The
snooker wasn't particularly good but I've got the result.
"It would be stupid to say I would rather have met Ronnie (O'Sullivan) in
the final but there was still pressure playing a fellow Scot.
"Winning three titles in a row is great, fantastic. I think Steve Davis
and Stephen Hendry have broken every other record in the game so it's nice
to get one they haven't got."
Higgins now plans to take a leaf out of the book of Davis and Hendry in his
bid to regain the number one spot in the world rankings.
"For a couple of years I was coming down to tournaments, having a drink, and
thinking that I had all those years in front of me. When I reached 26 I
realized that I haven't got long left in the game, at least not at the top,"
he said.
Higgins, whose wife Denise gave birth to their first child a week ago, added:
"I have been very relaxed in my private life and that has been reflect in the
way I have played this season.
"It's early on in the season and things can change but right now I would say
there's only Ronnie to worry about."
Dott, who was beaten 9-1 by Stephen Hendry MBE in the final of
1999 Regal Scottish, his sole other appearance in a ranking event final,
admitted he thought this final result was a much fairer one.
"I didn't miss much but John deserved it because he missed less than I did,"
he said.
Dott, who collected around $73,000 for finishing runner-up, said: "I was up
against the best player in the world that's what John is at the moment.
"I had a chance to go 4-1 up and if I had I would probably have been more
relaxed. John seemed to step up a gear after he won the fifth frame.
"It would be nice to play somebody from outside the top four in a final. The
likes of Higgins, O'Sullivan, Williams and Hendry are hard to beat at any
stage of a tournament, never mind the final."
