STEPHEN Lee has captured the second ranking title of his nine-year professional career, by defeating his English compatriot Peter Ebdon 9-4 in the final of the 2001 LG Cup at the Guild Hall in Preston, England, and with it pocketing a first prize of around $120,000.

Lee, the 27-year-old world number eight from Trowbridge in England whose only previous success in a ranking event came at the 1998 Grand Prix at the same venue, avenged the controversial 13-12 defeat he suffered at the hands of Ebdon in the second round of the Embassy World Championship last April when he was less than pleased with his emotional outburst toward the end of the match.

Despite Lee vowing at this season's Regal Masters not to play in the same England team as Ebdon in next year's World Snooker Cup, Ebdon insisted before the final that there was no bad feeling between them.

"It's not a grudge match as far as I'm concerned," he said. "I'm here to win the tournament and who I play in the final is immaterial.

"I have the utmost respect for Stephen. I'm looking forward to him being my team-mate in the next World Cup. He's a class player and certainly one that you want to have on your side."

However there was clearly no love lost between the players as they came to the handshake before the final, and the players were as tense on the table in the first frame as the atmosphere was surrounding them.

The first frame was re-racked after a stalemate endued, but it was Lee who got in first with a 31 break before allowing Ebdon back in. Ebdon couldn't capitalize on the opportunity and a further break of 35 by Lee helped him to take the first frame 99 points to 17.

Ebdon should have taken the second frame but he missed a red into the left center pocket while on a break of 54, and Lee took advantage of the error to make a break of 76 and take the second frame.

Lee stretched his lead to 3-0 after taking the next frame after Ebdon had tried to get four required snookers, but the world number seven from Wellingborough in England stopped the rot to take the fourth frame helped by pocketing a fantastic long red.

The players then took the mid-session interval break, but on the resumption after Ebdon had made a break of 52, Lee was all set to steal the fifth frame but missed the final pink to enable Ebdon to claw back to a 3-2 deficit.

A break of 60 in the sixth frame by Ebdon brought the match to 3-3, but Lee was hot in the session's remaining two frames as he scored breaks of 74, 36 and 44 without any reply from Ebdon to go into the second session holding a crucial 5-3 advantage.

The players returned for the second session's play with the inaugural LG Cup title in their eyes. Ebdon needed to gain a good start but it was Lee who gained an healthy initial lead in the ninth frame before potting the cue-ball to give Ebdon a lifeline. He duly took that lifeline superbly making a clearance of 78 to just go one frame down at 5-4.

Lee countered fantastically in the next frame to sweep away the nerves he showed during the previous one as he compiled a break of 70. Ebdon came back to the table to see if he could gain the necessary snookers – but to no avail.

The eleventh frame was a somewhat error strewn and scrappy affair which saw no breaks of significance, but Lee took it 66 points to 12 to extend his lead to 7-4.

From then on Lee always looked favorite for the title having such a commanding lead. A break of 52 assisted Lee to take the twelfth frame, and the next frame was highlighted by a superbly potted long red from an acute angle in making a match-winning break of 71 to take the title 9-4.

After the match Lee was magnanimous in victory, and in response to Ebdon's outburst during their Embassy World Championship encounter he said: "I think it's all forgotten now. It didn't enter my mind today. That's Peter's game. We are all emotional and everyone reacts differently.

"I had to get my point across because it was quite hurtful to me. I had a poor season anyway and it was horrible driving home from Sheffield. I couldn't go out of the house because everyone kept collaring me about it."

However Lee may still carry out his threat to pull out of the England team for next year's World Snooker Cup unless Ebdon apologizes for his behavior.

"He hasn't apologized and if he doesn't before the World Cup it will be difficult to play with him because we have to bond as a team," he added.

With all that aside Lee did praise Ebdon though for his competitive spirit. "He is never beaten until the last frame is won. Peter is a dogged player. He's hard and he pots some stupid balls from everywhere.

"That final hurdle is always the hardest to get over but I just kept plugging away. I only made 50s, 60s and 70s but I played some good safety and didn't go for that extra shot.

"I have been thinking good this week. After beating John Higgins in the quarterfinals I fancied going on to win the tournament. To take players like John and Stephen Hendry out of the tournament you have to feel that this is your chance."

Lee paid tribute to the part played in his success by Derek ‘Del Boy' Hill, who helped Ronnie O'Sullivan capture his first world title earlier this year.

"Del has been in my corner this week and made me feel at home. He has won a lot of tournaments with Ronnie. He knows the things that need to be said during the interval.

"Frank Adamson, who is now with Ronnie, has been my coach for a number of years but Del brings something different."

Ebdon, who won two ranking titles last season, has the consolation of a runners-up prize of around $62,000 and a rise in the provisional world rankings to number three.

He said: "I didn't really have a lot go right for me. Stephen played very solidly. It's disappointing but it was one of those things.

"Stephen has struggled to get over the line in a couple of finals. That was on my mind. If I had managed to stay with him I would have fancied my chances of winning the tournament."
