When Michael Collins moved to the United States in 1988 from his native England, he left behind the sport he loved – snooker. That was until 1990 when he, by pure chance, saw a sign at Preacher's Billiards (Preacher's is now called JRC Shooters) in Illinois that boasted a snooker table. Upon entering Preacher's, Michael not only found a regulation full-sized snooker table, but a 19th century antique one at that. As a result Michael established the United States Snooker Association to promote, develop and govern the sport of snooker in the United States.

The United States Snooker Association (USSA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 by the British born Michael Collins, to govern, promote and develop the sport of snooker in the United States.

The USSA's sole interest and purpose is to promote and develop the sport of snooker in the greatest sporting nation on earth. Our mission being to create a structure capable of supporting international championships in the United States, and to develop top American amateur and professional players to represent the nation at home and abroad.

The USSA is officially recognized as the governing body of snooker in the United States by the World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association (WPBSA), the organization which governs and regulates professional snooker and English billiards, the World Snooker Association (WSA), which, through its parent body the WPBSA, deals with all other aspects of snooker such as sponsorship and worldwide television contracts plus the organization of the Main and Challenge Tour events, and also by, to which it is affiliated to, the International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF), the organization that governs world non-professional snooker events, particularly the IBSF World Snooker Championship for national snooker champions.

The USSA is currently purely funded from the kind support it receives from its members, though any sponsorships and donations are appreciated and very much valued. Each member receives updated rule books and newsletters throughout the year which are packed with news about snooker in the United States plus special offers.

Each year since 1991 the USSA has held a National Snooker Championship with the eventual winner and runner-up having the opportunity to represent the United States in the IBSF World Snooker Championship. And In 1994, the USSA along with the Academy of Billiards, the Billiard Congress of America, the United States Billiard Association and The Women's Professional Billiard Association, formed the United States Confederation of Billiard Sports (USCBS). The USCBS is an organization, of which Michael Collins is a board member, established to further the popularity of all billiard sports in the United States.

If you would like to become a member of the USSA to help the promotion and development of the sport of snooker in the United States or have any other inquiry as regard to the association, then please do not hesitate to contact Michael Collins by e-mail or at the address above. The USSA would graciously value your support.
