World Snooker (formerly known as the World Snooker Association) is the
controlling body for professional snooker and English billiards throughout
the world.
World Snooker is in charge of all policy making. It is the overseer of the
financial affairs of professional snooker and billiards, dealing with all
aspects of the game, including sponsorships, television contracts, the media,
and all aspects of tournament organization.
Formed in 1968 as the Professional Billiards Players’ Association with only
eight members, World Snooker has seen a phenomenal growth in membership and
currently boasts 725 Snooker members worldwide plus a further 26 English
billiards only members.
World Snooker is the players’ association and snooker players are among
some of the best known faces in the sporting world, who compete in the World
Snooker organized world ranking snooker tournaments staged around the world.
Policy decisions of World Snooker are made by a Board of Directors who
are elected by the members of the Association.
World Snooker also acts in a disciplinary capacity, and was one of the
first professional sporting bodies to introduce a comprehensive drug
testing policy under International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines.
To fulfil International Olympic Committee conditions, the World
Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS) was founded in January, 1992,
incorporating the primary cue sports of snooker, pool and carom. World
Snooker was a founding member of the WCBS.
The current President of World Snooker is the Welsh professional golfer
and former US Masters Champion, Ian Woosnam. The President is elected
in an honorary role but is the figurehead of the Association and an
ambassador for snooker and English billiards worldwide.
