Q. Hello Tommy,
Everything I have ever heard about you has been good. I love to play pool, but I am struggling with finding good competition that doesn't want to gamble. I was wondering how do handle gambling? Is there anything you could suggest to help with this? Thanks and I hope to someday be able to meet you.
A. Keith,
Thanks for your letter/question. Briefly here is a quick answer. The only way to not gamble and have strength over it is to love the Lord Jesus Christ. You must be a born again christian to really be able to quit gambling or any destructive habit. If you truly give your whole life to Christ, he will take the desire away and give you a willingness to give it up.
I hope that helps. One more thing, when you do everything for Christ. (who is God) You have all the incentive you need, then you won't have to gamble to play pool. Also play all the tournaments you can. These are both sides of your question. I didn't know exactly what you were asking. Feel free to write me again.
T.K.
Q. Hi Tommy,
I was just wondering about your back hand position on your cue. Not really the position on the stick but the grip on the stick. Is there anything special that you are doing consistently with your back hand in reference to your aiming scheme?
A. Yes I am. I am tightening my grip for better control on draw shots.
Thanks for your question, Tom Kennedy.
Q. Hi Tommy, I read your web site and I enjoyed it very much. It was great to learn you are a Christian also. I am a Christian also. I play pool in an amateur state tour. The BCW
(Billiards Congress of Wisconsin). As a Christian, what do you think of playing in a pool tournament that is held in a tavern. I know your level of pool play, tavern tournaments do not happen much. My Christian walk is strong but I was thinking of the Christian witness it would be to Christians and non-Christians. Any encouragement or advice you can give me as a Christian pool player is appreciated. Keep up the good work.
A. First of all, playing pool is not sinfull or wrong, I feel we both believe that. Also, going into a tavern or bar isn't sinfull or wrong or forbidden by Scripture. And also, Jesus said "Let your light shine before men", don't put your light under a bushell. What Jesus means is that if you're a christian you have to witness for Christ. He said "go into all the world and make disciples" "Teaching them whatsoever I have commanded you". Paul even said in 1 Corinthians 5-9,10,11 "I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to get out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drukard, or an extortioner - not even to eat with such a person".
So really, the bottom line is you need to be with people to reach them for Christ. Even when Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners, the Pharisees were angry with Jesus. Jesus said "It is not the ones who are well that need a physician but the ones who are sick", again affirming that we need to be around sinners. You need to be in the world, but not of the world. 2 Cor. 6,17 says "come out from among them and be ye seperate says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing. Ephesian also says to "walk worthy of your calling". Also walk in wisdom. Walk circumspectly, be honest, walk in love. But also keep yourself pure and don't fall into sin. Don't get so close to temptation that you give in. It might be better to avoid all appearance of evil.
So really, you are free in Christ to play tavern tournaments. But just be careful and keep your thoughts pure. Your witness should encourage other christians to take your example and be a stronger witness for Christ.
Q. Hello Tommy? I was wondering if you or the folks there were aware of a screen
saver available to download concerning pool & billiards. I've looked hi and
low with nothing found.
A. My webmaster tells me that there is a billiards screen saver available at http://www.timemagic.com and also that B. Digest will be making their screen saver available to the general public soon.
Q. Will you be at Dothan, Al this year at "Pocket's" for the pool tourney in October?
A. Depending on how other things are scheduled, I may attend this year. Check out the site later this month for my updated schedule.
Q. How long have you been playing?
A. 20 years. I started when I was 13, and I'm now 33.
Q. What made you first decide that you wanted to be a professional billiard player?
A. I wanted to beat everybody I ever played.
Q. What would you consider to be your greatest achievement as a professional billiard player?
A. Winning the U.S. Open.
Q. How much time do you spend practicing?
A. Not much at all anymore. Currently about 1-2 hours a week. In the beginning, I practiced 12 hours a day, everyday for two years.
Q. When you practice, do you basically shoot drills , play against other players, or just run racks?
A. Mostly I just run racks, or practice straight pool.
Q. You are a Christian pool player; what would you consider to be the biggest difference between yourself and the average professional billiard player?
A. I don't gamble anymore. I just play tournaments and do exhibitions. In my mind, there's a difference.
Q. What has been the most difficult part of being a Christian pool player?
A. The scrutiny I get from people who wait for me to make mistakes so they can try to discredit my Christian beliefs. And I do make mistakes, just like any other human does. I just keep trying to do better, though.
Q. There are a lot of professional players in the Florida area; what would you attribute this to?
A. The weather. Also, there used to be a lot of gambling going on. There's not as much money play now, but there are a lot of open tournaments, and a great 9-ball tournament circuit.
Q. How does it help your game to be around such good players?
A. It always keeps me focused and in stroke.
Q. There's been talk of an East Coast and a West Coast style of play in professional billiards; how would you describe the differences?
A. The East Coast players play a slower game. I think that comes from Straight Pool being such a dominant game in the East for so long.
Q. Where did the name "The Juggler" come from?
A. I can set nine balls in motion on a pool table, and keep them rolling in a figure-8 pattern, for as long as I want, without any collisions.
