2000 U.S. Open 14.1 Championship
Tape #17SP-04
Jim Rempe vs. George "Ginky" San Souci

OK, I apologize for being a bit late with the video review this time but I have a good excuse. I was watching the video over and over again because it is just that good. This month, Accu-Stats takes us back to the BCA U.S. Open 14.1 Championship in New York but we go there with a twist. This time we are going to go to New York via Pennsylvania; Scranton Pennsylvania to be exact as we are going to get a player review from King James himself, Jim Rempe.

Jim Rempe has won a number of 14.1 titles throughout his career and was one of the favorites to win the event while his opponent, George "Ginky" San Souci, is much more known for his 9-ball game. This video will show you the difference between an experienced straight pool player and a 9-ball player when playing the game of straight pool.

Rempe owns this match from the opening lag as he wins the lag, makes Ginky break and then immediately calls a ball in the rack and is off to the races with a multi rack run. Ginky does get to the table eventually but he just can't put anything together to truly get into the match. With Rempe firing on all cylinders in this match, Ginky is really outgunned and it shows.

The amazing thing about this tape is the commentary. The commentators are Pat Fleming and Jim Rempe talking about the match as they watch it on tape in Rempe's home. This video may well be one of the best chances a fan ever gets to have an idea what a world class straight pool player is thinking as he runs out rack after rack. Rempe explains why he nudges this ball and why he chooses that ball throughout the opening run and the only bad thing is that he tells you so much, you will want to go back and watch the tape again to take it all in.

Towards the middle of this match, the players get involved in a small safety battle that proves to be very interesting as Rempe pulls off a standard straight pool safety that Ginky didn't see. Ginky attempts to duplicate the safety a couple shots later but gets nowhere. Rempe explains why it didn't work in Ginky's situation and also mentions that Ginky told him after the game that he would never forget that shot.

The match is not the only thing Rempe talks about during his commentary as he reminisces about his history in the game of Straight Pool and losing the 74 US Open 14.1 tourney by 1 ball. Rempe also talks about the Simonis cloth currently being used, aiming on cut shots and cue deflection throughout this video.

We get the usual Accu-Stats treatment in this video with 4 camera angles and the telestrator but since the telestrator is left over from the original commentary, it is not very useful in this situation.

I have recommended certain Accu-Stats videos in the past, but I can easily say that I recommend this video above any other I have had the pleasure to watch, as the amount of information you will learn about the game is immense. Any player interested in the game of straight pool should move this to the top of their want list and even non-straight pool fans will find this video very educational.
