Canadian 9-Ball Championships Day 2

Danny Hewitt

Day 2 is complete in the 9-Ball Division of the Canadian Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Four players remain on the winners side. Alex Pagulayan started the day rocky, down 7-1 to 20 year Chris Jenkins from Ontario. But to the delight of the crowd, Alex won the next 10 racks in a row to take the match. Ron Wiseman moved into the final A-side foursome by making short work of Alain Martel 10-3. Al Logan had an impressive win over defending champion John Horsfall 11-3. Logan used an effective break shot to neutralize Horsfall. Cliff Thorburn took out two crowd favourites, Nova Scotia's Pat Briand 11-4, and New Brunswick's Jeff Kennedy 11-8. Kennedy and Thorburn were having one of the best matches of the tournament, trading games back and forth to 8-8. But an unforced error by Kennedy on a makeable 8-ball cost him the 17th rack, and he never recovered.

The story of the B-Side is Danny Hewitt. After losing his opening match to Brad Poorman of Saskatchewan, Hewitt has faced 5 former champions or runners up, and he just keeps knocking them down. Hewitt has scored successive wins over Ed Galati, Luc Salvas, Edwin Montal, John Horsfall and Paul Potier. His next match will not get any easier as he faces fellow Quebecer Alain Martel. The other six players remaining on the B-side are Kenndey, Jenkins, Alberta's Gary Hauck and Mike Abou Dahar, Chris Orme from Ontario, and BC's Carlos Santos.

In the Women's bracket, four remain undefeated - Ontario's Rachel Abbink and Anita Kuczma, and Quebec's Catherine Garon and Nathalie Jacob. On the B-Side, British Columbia's Maryann McConnell, Quebec's Chantal Vezina, and New Brunswick's Lisa Gould and Angela Belding.

The finals of both divisions will conclude some time Sunday evening.
