Dennis dominates GSBT field in Florida

Dan Dennis survived a strong bid in the finals by Cliff Tyler to complete an undefeated weekend, June 6-7, on the Great Southern Billiard Tour. Tour Director Shannon Daulton thanked Capone's Billiards and its owner, Rocky Capone for hosting the $1,500-added, A/B handicapped event which drew 32 players to Spring Hill, FL.

Dennis had to get by Tyler twice and did so much easier the first time around, defeating him in a winners' side final four match 9-2. Dan Whitten, in the meantime, was busy sending Jason Richko west 9-6. Dennis gained the hot seat with a 9-6 win over Whitten.

Over on the one-loss side, Albert Howe tallied a pair of 9-3 wins over Bill Stoll and Jimmy Dempsey, only to be dropped into the tie for fifth place, when Tyler came over and moved into the quarterfinals with his own 9-3 win. Rich Schau joined him in those quarterfinals, after wins over Bart Rich and Louie Smith, and a 9-6 win over Richko.

Tyler advanced to the semifinals with a 9-7 win over Schau and moved back for a second shot at Dennis with a hill-hill semifinal victory over Whitten. Taking advantage of momentum gained during that struggle in the semifinals, Tyler fared much better in his second match versus Dennis, forcing a 17th and final game. The result, though, was duplicated, as Dennis prevailed, capturing the first place prize.
