Jayson Shaw And Earl Strickland Set To Renew Rivalry in Last 64 Blockbuster

Five-time US Open Champion Earl Strickland and 2017 winner Jayson Shaw will renew their rivalry in the last 64 of the US Open Pool Championship.

Eagle Eye Shaw, who previously lived with Strickland when first moving to the United States, had clashed with Strickland after a bust-up at a Straight Pool tournament in New York.

If the 2022 Mosconi Cup press conference is anything to go by, fans can expect fireworks as two of the game’s most charismatic characters collide on the big stage – streamed live on DAZN in the United States.

Following defeat to veteran Ralf Souquet on Tuesday, the Pearl battled through Loser’s Qualification with victories over Nguyen Thang and Toh Lian Han to book a spot in the last 64, proving his ability to maintain at the top 39 years after first US Open success.

Other Headlines

Five-time US Open Pool Champion Shane Van Boening avoided an early scare to reach the last 64 through the double-elimination format. Marco Teutscher, who was scarily involved in a high-speed car accident earlier in the week, brushed off the aches and pains to overcome SVB on the outside tables.

Teutscher has been awarded with an all-European affair with Ukraine’s Vitaliy Patsura, whilst former World Pool Championship runner-up Chang Jung-Lin has the unenviable task of facing Van Boening in-front of an adoring home crowd.

Defending champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz defeated young-Dane Mickey Krause 9-2 in Winners’ Qualification – a fixture set to be repeated in Thursday’s schedule.

With a wide-range of European’s vying to secure the next automatic spot in the Mosconi Cup, attention will be Niels Feijen and Mario He who will battle out for a spot in the last 32. ‘The Panda’ He, currently #4 in the World Nineball Tour Rankings, is yet to feature at the trans-atlantic feature event and can put his name firmly into contention with a deep run in Atlantic City.

In the final match of Tuesday’s play, Tyler Styer avoided a late comeback from former European Open semi-finalist Jose Alberto Delgado to hold on for a 9-7 victory on the tv table. Team USA’s Mosconi Cup hopeful will face Sanjin Pehlivanovic in the last 64 – the player to knock him into the loser’s bracket – in a fascinating rematch.
