Legendary Mike Sigel in Good Form on Day 1 of the 70th World Tournament

Mike Sigel

Clifton, New Jersey-  Hall of Famer and living legend Mike Sigel is aiming for his 4th World Championship in 14.1 in this year's 70th edition of the World Tournament. Sigel, while chatting constantly throughout the match, managed to win a decisive 100 to 5 score over Jim Gottier of NYC, who finished 9th last year.  Sigel is one of the many great players in the 48 invitational field at Breaker Billiards which is hosting this year's event. The world Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event will start play today October 6,2010 and ends on Columbus Day October 11th. The greatest straight pool players from around the world have arrived on USA's east coast again to New Jersey, and vying in this prestigious event to win the coveted title of World Straight Pool Champion.  The event is co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, www.Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats.

Gottier took some early negative points to go -2  while Sigel kept controle entire match. Gottier got one good open chance but was not able to capitalize. Sigel made some tremendous shots to the delight of the fans who can remember the famous "Captain Hook" from his stellar days on tour decades ago.

"I only won this three times? I'm pretty sure I won it six times, but back then they called it the US Open a few years instead of the World Championship. Oh well", Sigel was saying after the match.

Sigel will be facing a mouth watering feature against World #1 Mika Immonen of Finland at 8pm tonight. Mika will be fresh off his Challenge of Champions win two days ago.

Other highlights included Danny Barouty scoring one for the USA as he ran 99 & out against Netherland's Huidji See, who silver medaled in 2007. Barouty won 100-0. German favorite Thorsten Hohmann defeated Gerda Hofstatter of Austria 100-32. Oldie but goodie Dave Daya showed he was still dangerous with his 100-60 win over new 14.1 import from 9-ball Shaun Wilkie.

Brackets will be hosted by www.azbilliards.com and live streaming of the event at www.accu-stats.com
