WPA Junior Championships Day Two

Russian Fedor Gorst
After two days of play at the WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championship in Moscow Russia, half of the quarter final spots are now booked.

Day three is going to be a long one for those players still in action. By the end of the day, each division will be down to it’s final two competitors.

Top local players, Kristina Tkach (Girls U19) and Fedor Gorst (Juniors U19) are both through to the single elimination stages of their divisions with convincing wins. Both players lost a total of five racks over their first two matches (with Fedor racing to 9 instead of 7). Gorst’s two wins came against last years U17 runner up  Enkhbold Temuujin and 2016 European Champion in three different disciplines, Patrick Hoffman from Germany. Joining Tkach and Gorst with an undefeated record after two matches is their fellow countryman Egor Trifanov.

The boys divisions have been dominated by EPBF representatives so far. With the two boys divisions both seeing eight players advance to the single elimination stage, seven of those eight players are from from Europe, with the sole exception being Hong Kong’s Robbie Capito who defeated European Champion Wiktor Zielinski from Poland.

Six American players are still fighting on the one loss side of their respective divisions, as well as one representative (Alex Jo Booth) competing for a medal in the girls division. Booth won a hill-hill nail biter over Peru’s Nataly Damian when Damian missed an 8-ball. Another US favorite, April Larson, dropped an early match to one of the Korean players and will have to win another match to make the final round of eight players.

Two players from the Panamerican Confederation still have chances to win the U17 division. Costa Rican Andres Aguilar and Tremus Shamir of Curacao will face Eric Roberts and Joey Tate from the USA in their next matches.

Representatives from the event have complimented both Roberts and Tate (along with fellow US player Alex Booth) on their great sportsmanship and manners at the event so far.
