Fujinaga beats Black Widow in San Diego

Day one at the WPBA San Diego Classic is drawing to a close with the upset of the night being Jane Fujinaga's 9-6 victory over Jeanette Lee. Lee lead the match 3-1 early, but Fujinaga roared back to win four in a row and take the lead 5-3. Then it was Lee's turn to come back as she tied the score at 5-5 with her breaking in the alternating break format. Fujinaga would win game 11 on Lee's break to take a 6-5 lead, but then Lee won on Fujinaga's break to tie it at 6-6. That would be the last game Lee would win as Fujinaga won the final three games for the 9-6 win.

Other early upsets on Thursday included Ramona Biddle's win over Ewa Laurence. Biddle trailed 4-1 early in the match but came back to score the 9-6 win. Megan Minerich trailed Belinda Campos 6-3 in their match before coming back to score the hill-hill win. Biddle will face Minerich on Friday.

The late matches saw Melissa Herndon hand Jennifer Chen a 9-6 loss. Herndon led 7-2 at one time, but Chen made a bit of a comeback to get six games before Herndon put her away.

In the comeback match of the night, Tiffany Nelson trailed Sarah Ellerby 8-3 and played perfect 9-ball to bring the match all the way back to hill-hill. Nelson was running out in the final game when she got a bad leave on the 8. She played Ellerby safe and left a length of the table bank shot on the 8. Ellerby missed the bank but left Nelson a width of the table back on the 8. Nelson fired it in with 2 rail shape to win the match 9-8.
