Owen wins Carolinas One Pocket

Gabe Owen

Gabe Owen might have lost his first match to a hot-shooting Larry Nevel, but someone else would have to beat him to keep him from winning the 2005 Carolinas Open One Pocket Division. No one else did.

Owen came back with nine straight wins on the one-loss side, just to get to get into the finals against 'Biloxi Mike' Serber. That string of nine matches included wins over such notables as Shannon Daulton, Wade Crane, Tony Chohan, Jeremy Jones, defending champion Scott Frost and the latest inductee into the One Pocket Hall of Fame Nick Varner.

The final race to give got off to a bad start for Owen, who found himself trailing 2-0 quickly. Owen took control after that and won five of the next six games for the 5-3 win.

"I started off a little slow and made a few mistakes. But I started playing my game after that and got the win" Owen commented after the match.

Owen earned $2500 for first, while Serber settled for $1500. Varner and Frost filled out the top four spots.

Complete brackets for the one pocket event are online, as well as brackets for the 96 player nine ball event that got started on Thursday. Diana Hoppe is at the event and we have a small photo gallery from her, with more photos on the way Friday.
