Josh Roberts Strokes Past Opponents at GSBT South Carolina Event

Another fun filled weekend ended for the Great Southern Billiard Tour July 26th-27th, this time at Strokers Billiards in Sumter, South Carolina.  The tour hosted its latest $1500 added guaranteed main event and saw thirty two players show to take home their share of the prize.

As Saturday came to a close, twelve players made their way into the Sunday rounds.  The winner's side of the board saw none of the usual top names, in part thanks to Michael Newsome who had a tremendous draw for the day.  All three of his initial matches were decided on the hill.  Newsome bested Tour Director Shannon Daulton in the first round, Larry Nevel in the second, and Zeek Gomez third round.  This ensured his spot on the right side of the board come Sunday where he was matched against Jeremy Milber; and B.J. Hucks was pitted against Josh Roberts.

When all was said and done, Newsome sent Milber west 9-6, while Roberts did the same to Hucks in a double hill set ending 9-8, setting up a hot-seat match between Newsome and Roberts.  Roberts did not allow Newsome much opportunity to steal that match as he finished him of 9-3 to seal himself a quick shot in the final round.

The one-loss side started with Boyd Bauknight (d. Zeek Gomez 9-8), Christy Norris (d. Phil Irick 9-8), and Greg Dix (d. Brian Timmons 9-4) ending the tournament lives of their opponents.  Nevel had an easy walk into the next round due to a forfeit by opponent Casey Stone.

Bauknight made it through one more round against Norris 9-7, before succumbing to Hucks 9-4.  Nevel continued through Dix 9-6, before falling to Milber 9-5.  Milber got past Hucks 9-6 but was ousted by Newsome 9-3 in the semi-final round.  But Newsome ended his day the same way it started, with an identical beat by Josh Roberts in the final arena of 9-3.  Congratulations to both players – they played great throughout the tournament!  In addition, kudos once again to Christy Norris for her finish in the event of 7th/8th place – she took home $50 for her efforts as top women finisher as well.

Thanks to Strokers Billiards for their southern hospitality and to tour sponsors Nick Varner Cues & Cases, Jimmy Reeves Custom Cues & Repairs, and Break N Run Sportswear.  The tour will head back to Knoxville, Tennessee this weekend (August 2nd-3rd) for their upcoming event to be held at Breakers Sports Bar & Grille.  For more information on the tour, contact Shannon Daulton directly at (865) 850-4572.
