33rd Annual US Open Begins

Shane Van Boening is the #1 seed

The 33rd Annual US Open 9-Ball Championship is ready to kick off on Sunday morning with 237 players hoping to earn the title of "US Open Champion".

The players meeting was Saturday night by tournament directors Ken Shuman and Buxton Turner. The top 32 players were seeded into the main draw with reigning Champion Shane Van Boening seeded as the #1 player.

In addition to the top 32 players being seeded, eight players from Team Kuwait and eight players from the Philippines were separated so that they would not have to play each other in the first couple of rounds. Promoter Barry Behrman explained that this is being done to encourage players from outside of the US competing in this event.

This tournament will be a race to 11, winner breaks, loser racks and the players will break from the break box.

The brackets have been drawn and tournament play begins Sunday at 11am.

With the kind of firepower that is competing in this event, there were bound to be marquee matches scheduled for the first round.

Louis Ulrich will face Rodolfo Luat, Gabe Owen will play Ryan McCreesh, Rodney Morris will take on Danny Harriman, Tony Crosby plays Mike Dechain and Tony Chohan plays Chris Bartrum.
