Briones Wins Again On The Tiger Amateur Tour

The Tiger Amateur Tour held stop #8 of the season this past weekend at Slick Willies near Dairy Ashford in Houston,Texas. This is without a doubt the best Slicks location in the city and we had a 75 player turnout for the 2 day event, as well as 20 more for the Sunday Second Chance Event. This event had $1,000 Added to it. We had several out of towners come in from Louisiana, as well as all around Texas, we thank you all.

So we played it down to the final 16 Saturday and they all came back Sunday to fight it out for the cheese. I'm going to give you match updates from Sunday. Winners side action saw Rodney Houdini Stewart take Don Bullard down 11-5, Dale Briones squeaked one out 11-10 against Victor Rojas, after being down 10-5, Bobby Gonzales 11-8 over Joey "The Tiger" Torres, and Ernesto Bayaua got by David Mendiola 11-7, all great and close matches there. This left 4 players on the winners side and they went to battle, Ernesto got by Bobby 11-7 in a match that was game for game up until 7, and Dale squeaked out yet another against Houdini 11-9. This set up a battle for the hot seat match between Dale and Ernesto, they had previously played in the finals against one another in February at the Big Tyme Event. This match looked to be over rather early as Dale held a commanding 10-5 lead, but before you know it, it was a hill-hill battle, and both had their chances in the hill game, when the dust settled Dale cam out on top 11-10.

The one loss side round of 13-16 saw Leon Contreras take out Steve Davenport 9-6, Shane Thompson over Shane Hvamstad 9-3, Abel Lara 9-5 over Dino Little and Sonny Bosshamer 9-6 over David Chow.

The 9-12th round consisted of the following, Leon 9-6 over Don, Shane 9-8 over Victor, David 9-4 over Sonny, and Joey 9-3 over Abel. This left the final eight.

The 7-8 round saw Leon and Shane play a thriller and in the end Leon escaped with a hard fought 9-7 win. The other match was David and Joey, it ended up with a final score of 9-5. David had a good showing after his runner up finish in the last event, keep the good shooting up.

The 5-6th place matches saw Leon cruise past Bobby 9-5 and Joey steamroll Houdini 9-2.

This left the 4th place match and it was probaly played in record time as both players shoot fast, it was Joey against Leon and in the end Joey got the nod 9-3.

Now there was 3 left and it pitted Joey Torres against Ernesto Bayaua, with the winner getting a shot at Dale waiting in the hot seat. This match was close all the way and saw both players have their chances and in the end of this hill hill thriller it was "The Tiger" himself Joey Torres getting the nod 9-8.

The finals was set, as Joey would have to double dip Dale to win the event, and most in attendance thought he had a great chance at this, as he is a 15 year old pool phenom who recnetly signed a deal with Tigerproducts.com to represent them. This match started out with a bang for Joey as he jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, and Dale being the warrior that he is played it one game at a time, the next thing you know it is 5-5, and then before you could blink it was 11-5, Dale won 11 in a row to take his second title of the year down on the Tiger Amateur Tour. Congrats to both whom played excellent and to all the rest of the players that cashed in.

The Second Chance Event drew 20 players Sunday and when the dust settled it was Chris Young over Ming Ng, Chris earned $250, Ming got $170 for 2nd. Others cashing in this event were 3rd Jason Pearce $120, 4th Ricki Casper $60, and the 5-6th finishers for $25 were John Day and David Escobedo.
