Ussery goes undefeated on GSBT stop

B.J. Ussery downed James Council twice to take the Great Southern Billiard Tour stop event title on the weekend of August 4-5. The $1,500-added event drew 62 entrants to Shore Thing Billiards in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Ussery and Derek Leonard, both AA players on the tour, squared off against B opponents James Council and Chase Gilbert among the winners' side final four. As Ussery was busy sending Gilbert west 11-5, "Chew" Leonard and "Peanut" Council locked up in a double hill battle that led to a seemingly unlikely victory by the "Peanut" over the "Chew." Ussery got into the hot seat 11-2 over "Peanut" and waited on his return from the semifinals.

The double-A "Chew" moved west to meet up with David Styers, a B player who'd just defeated Josh Roberts (AA) 7-2 and Chris Vollmar (A) 7-7.  Gilbert picked up Josh Heeter, who'd just given up only a single rack to advance past both Joshua Pedron (shutout) and William Foster (7-1). Leonard and Gilbert got right back on track, defeating Styers (11-5) and Heeter (7-4) to face each other in the quarterfinals.

"Chew" ended Gilbert's day with an 11-2 win in the quarterfinals, and turned his attention to a "Peanut" battles "Chew" re-match in the semifinals. Once again, oddly enough, the "Peanut" got the better of "Chew" 7-6. Ussery had the last word on "Peanut," defeating him for a second time 11-4 to take home top honors.

Shannon and Marge Daulton thanked the owners and staff of Shore Thing Billiards, as well as sponsors Nick Varner Cues and Cases, Andy Gilbert Custom Cues, Tiger Products and Delta-13 racks.
