Ullah Knocks Over Melling

Mattey Ullah (NOR)

All other favourites on track in Dynamic Billiard Germany Open

Thursday, 16 August 2012: In the first winner’s round, Mattey Ullah (NOR) knocked Chris Melling (GBR) for six by beating him 8:3.

On paper, Melling was definitely the favourite to win this match. Melling is currently the number 4 ranked player in the overall rankings while Ullah ranks on 47. But the match took an unforeseeable progress. Already in the first rack, Melling was able to draw first blood but he missed an easy 6-ball and left the opener for Ullah. That proved to be typical for Melling’s performance. He seemed to be somewhere else but with his match. “I did not have the best of times recently, so I guess this is what must happen to me right now†stated Melling after the match. A real peculiar thing happened in the 5th rack. The score was already 3:1 for Ullah when Melling broke the balls and had the 7-ball down. He tried to pocket the 1-ball, missed it but got another lucky kiss from the cue ball so the 1-ball fell in the called pocket. However, the cue ball scratched and gave ball in hand to Ullah. Just like Melling in the first rack, Ullah missed an easy 6-ball and gave way to Melling. But the likable Brit who is normally so consistent in his performance played a bad position for the 10- ball. Instead of taking great care, he just looked at it, fired and missed it. It looked like he was really frustrated with what was going on. Ullah remained focussed and made the 10-ball, leading 4:1. The match went along but Melling did not seem to be able to find his rhythm. When he broke the balls in the 11th rack, he was already trailing 3:7. As if there was a curse lying on Melling today, the 1-ball jumped off the table. Ullah used that ball in hand to run the rack and get the deserved victory with 8:3.

Other notable results include Jayson Shaw (SCO) winning 8:4 over Christophe Creter (GER). Oliver Ortmann (GER) won his match over Paddy McLoughlin (IRE) with 8:3. In the Russian junior’s clash, Andrey Seroshtan won 8:2 over his fellow countryman Vitaly Pavlukhin.
