Southern Wins GB-9 Ball Championship

Tony Southern

The BWPPA tour returned to Savannas Pool & Snooker, Whitefield, Manchester, for the final event of this season, Event 4 from the 18-19 November 2023.

They were competing for the first prize of £250 from a prize pot of £560, and the title of 2023 Predator Cues GB 9-Ball Champion.

Early action saw Joe Burns take a 7/4 win over Challenge no.1 Darren Brook.

In the winner’s qualifiers, Tony Southern came back from 2/6 v Fred Dinsmore to defeat him 7/6, and Dave Beaumont beat Burns 7/2. Dinsmore than whitewashed Brook 6/0 to make yet another semi-final

In the semi-finals, Southern had an 7/2 win over Burns, in his debut semi-final, and in the other semi-final, Beaumont edged Dinsmore 7/5 in a thriller, with Dinsmore again throwing away a big lead, from 6/2 to lose.

It was to be a Beaumont v Southern v final, for the 2nd event in a row, both started well, but Southern was soon 4/1 ahead, only for Beaumont to come back to 3/4 down. Southern then had his best spell of the season, winning the next 4 frames to win his 1st BWPPA main event since 2017, move above Dinsmore into 2nd in the end of season rankings, and denied Beaumont a perfect winning season.

2 days prior to this, the same 2 players had contested the Ultimate Pool Wheelchair showcase final, which Southern won on a blackball shoot out, others playing were Gary Swift and Aslam Abubaker.

In between the BWPPA final and the publishing of this report, Swift and Southern won the G1 and G2 snooker gold medals at the World Ability Games in Thailand, congratulations to them both on a fabulous achievement.

A video of the main event final is available to watch here.

Due to low numbers, there was no challenge event. Congratulations Darren Brook, for finishing top of the challenge rankings for 2023, and winning a lovely aspire cue from main tour sponsors Predator.
