Team Titles won by Sweden and The Netherlands

Team Sweden Ladies and Team The Netherlands Seniors

The team competitions at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019 have been decided. Team Sweden won the ladies division while team The Netherlands took the title in the seniors division.

The final match in the seniors division was played between The Netherlands and Portugal. Jesse Thehu took a quick victory in his 8-ball match over Sergio Silva 7-4. The other two matches were very close. Jim Telfer was at hill-hill 6-6 with Henrique Correia in 10-ball when Rene Peeters pocketed the winning 9-ball in his match with Manuel Pereira 8-4 to win the team match and the title 2-0.

Annika Nilsson fell to the sharp blade of Susanne Wessel 2-6 in 9-ball. It came to a shoot-out where the Swedish ladies took the title, winning the final match 2-1 over the Germans.

Earlier today, several round of the 8-ball individuals were played. One interesting match was the clash between Jim Telfer (NED) and Mats Elfroos (SWE). Nerves were getting the better of both players early on as they both missed easy shots. It was Telfer however, who found his rhythm first and took control of the match. Elfroos couldn't put up much of a fight against Telfer and in the end, the final score was a clear 7-2 result that put Telfer to the round of the 32 player single elimination while Elfroos needs another victory on the loser’s side.

Hehre and Karabiyik Go For Gold In Euro 8-Ball Championship

Anja Hehre and Aygun Karabiyik

The 8-ball individuals have been decided at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019. Anja Hehre (GER) and Aygun Karabiyik (SUI) have taken the titles in their respective divisions.

Aygun Karabiyik had a grueling day on the way to the title. After having ousted all three Portuguese players, he also eliminated Jesse Thehu (NED) with a lopsided 7-2 scoreline in the semi-final. Karabiyik faced a very tough Michael Stark (AUT) in the final match. Stark had also eliminated several players earlier as well but not with results as decisive as Karabiyik. The final match went mostly as expected with Karabiyik taking an early lead and looking to be on his way to an easy title. At 4-1 though, Karabiyik committed several unforced errors which brought Stark back into the match. Stark fought back to within one rack at 5-4 and took his time-out. When he came back, he broke but lost his cue ball and could not do anything with it. Karabiyik capitalised on that situation and cleared the table with one more point needed for the Championship. That point would come in the next rack when Karabiyik won a safety battle over Stark to win the match and the well deserved title.

Even though Hehre was down 0-2 and 2-3, she managed to overpower her Italian opponent and eventually come up with a nice 5:3 victory which brought her the title.

Germany Launched A Firework Of Medals

The 8-ball individuals at the Dynamic Billard European Pool Championships 2018 in NH Conference Centre in Veldhoven, The Netehrlands, have been decided. Germany turned out to be the big winner of the day, taking 3 titles and a total of 10 medals in that one day only. This performance catapults team Germany to the top of the medal table after three of five events.

In the men’s division, Bahram Lotfy (DEN) defeated Konrad Juszczyszyn (POL) 8:2 in the final match. Lotfy seemed to be on fire throughout the whole tournament. His victims on his way to the final match include Alex Lely (NED), Mario He (AUT), Alexander Kazakis (GRE) and in the semi-final  Mieszko Fortunski (POL). This impressive list of players got ousted by Lofty who came to Veldhoven pretty unheralded and can be regarded as a real surprise winner. „I have been focussing a lot on my practice over the last year“, stated Lotfy after the final match. „I practice a lot with Niels (Feijen) and I also do mental training as in meditation“, Lotfy added. „I felt really comfortable throughout the whole competition and I’m looking forward to the 9-ball“.

In the women’s division, Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER) took the title in a final match against Tamara Peeters-Rademakers (NED) with 6:3. Ivanovskaia literally played against the whole arena since the audience was packed with Peeters’ friends, Family and supporters. But also the German contingency managed to make some noise during the final match. The match for Gold was decided by Ivanovskaia playing more solid than Peeters. The German was a bit unlucky on her break shot but she did not commit any mistakes during the racks. Peeters missed too many shots and especially positions which in the end cost her the match. „I had a tough match against Tamara“, said Ivanovskaia after the final, „I could really feel the pressure from the audience.“ „My toughest matches in the whole event probably was against Oliwia (Czuprynska). At hill-hill, she pocketed the 8-ball and scratched. I won that match on pure luck. Maybe that gave me extra strength against Jasmin (Ouschan) in the semi-final“. Tamara Peeters-Rademakers stated: „I committed too many mistakes in the final match. I had such a great support from everyone here but Veronika simply played better than me tonight“, admitted Peeters-Rademakers.

In the senior’s division, Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER) claimed the title against Sandor Tot (HUN) in the final with 7:1. Two times already this week, Tot has been the final destination for Wirsbitzki. In straight pool in the quarter-final and in 10-ball in the round of the last 16 players, Tot eliminated Wirsbitzki. Today in the final match, Wirsbitzki wanted payback time. And he received his revenge on Tot. Wirsbitzki played extremely solid and thrashed Tot 7:1 in a single-sided final match. Wirsbitzki has been a constant gold medallist in previous years in the senior’s division, but his last title in the individuals is as far back as 2015 when he won the title in straight pool in Sankt Johann im Pongau in Austria.

In the „oldest“ division of the youth, the Under 23’s, Casper Matikainen (FIN) snatched the title with an 8:2 victory over Johannes Schmitt (GER). Matikainen pretty much dominated the Under 23 division since he eliminated most of the other favourite players one after the other. Kevin Schiller (GER), Vitaliy Patsura (UKR) and Samuel Santos (POR) are the guns Matikainen put to shame during the 8-ball individuals.

In the girls’ division, Darya Siranchuk (UKR) won her first title against Palina Chernik (BLR) with 5:1. Siranchuk has already won three medals in the girls’ last year but no title yet. One silver medal and two bronze medals were her achievements in Leende in 2017. Siranchuk had to take the detour over the loser’s side this year in 8-ball since she lost in the winner’s qualification round 4:5 to Aleksandra Guleikova (RUS). Then, she managed to win against Cindy Keller (SUI) 5:0 and Alina Brummer (GER) 5:2 before she encountered Valeriia Trushevskaia. That match turned into a fierce battle. When the smoke settled, Siranchuk was the 5:4 winner in the semi-final. The final match was a more or less clear affair for Siranchuk.

In the wheelchair division, Jouni Tahti (FIN) once more was the guy to beat. He eliminated Henrik Lasrsson (SWE) with 5:2 in the final match. This is the 35th medal for Tahti on European level and his 23rd title. What a domination from Tahti. Unfortunately, the day also saw some donwside. The wheelchair division produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far. The athlete Kurt Deklerck (BEL) was given the black card and therefore disqualified from the whole European Championships and stripped from all his results. Deklerck was judged guilty for cheating in his matches in adding a greasy substance onto the cue ball during his match, manipulating the angles of the game. For that reason, there is only one Bronze Medal awarded in the wheelchair division today.

Seniors and Ladies European Championships end with final awards

All Gold Medallists from today

The final titles have been awarded at the 2017 Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands. In the 9-ball individuals, Ine Helvik (NOR) took the title in the ladies division while Henrique Correia (POR) snatched the trophy in the seniors division. The team competition was won by Team Germany in the ladies and Team Norway in the seniors division.

The final match in the seniors division took place between Henrique Correia and Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER). Correia had the better start but then committed several easy mistakes during the match. Wirsbitzki was a always able to give him good competition but somehow Correia always seemed to be one step ahead of Wirsbitzki. After 10 racks, the score was all square at 5:5. Then Correia managed to win three racks in a row and got to 8:5. The pressure was too much for Wirsbitzki. He pulled one rack back from Correia but then the Portuguese executed almost a perfect break shot and ran the rack he needed to win the match and the title 8:6 over the German.

Wessel won another one but Helvik was simply too strong for her today. 6:3 was the final result for Helvik who took her second title this week.

The team final between Norway and The Netherlands turned out to become a thriller. Christian Johannesen won the 10-ball over Jim Telfer and brought team Norway 1:0 up. Then, Jesse Thehu equalised that by winning the 8-ball with 7:4 over Ronnie Oldervik. The score was 1:1 in the team match and the 9-ball ad to decide. Vegar Kristiansen was up against Mozes Leeflang. Though Kristiansen took a 6:2 lead over Leeflang, the Dutch proved to have nerves of steel and fought back rack after rack. He even managed to tie the match on the hill at 7:7. The final rack was really even with both players having some luck and playing safety shots back and forth. In the end, Kristiansen was the luckier player and finished the match 8:7 in his favour which brought the Gold Medal to Team Norway.

8-ball titles go to Wessel and Correia

Susanne Wessel (GER) and Henrique Correia (POR)

The titles in the 8-ball individuals at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands. In the ladies division, Germany had a perfect day and took all 4 medals including the title for Susanne Wessel (GER). In the senior’s division, Henrique Correia (POR) took the title.

The final match in the senior’s division was played between Henrique Correia and Jim Telfer (NED). The odds were totally in favour of Correia. With 7 titles under his belt already, he was set for his next title. Having defeated Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER) 7:2 among others today, he was filled with confidence and started the match furiously. The first 4 racks belonged to him alone and it looked like Telfer would receive a nice whipping from him. The Dutch who had eliminated his teammate Jesse Thehu (NED) 8:7 in the semi-final needed to get a foot in the door in the match. His break shot did not work and Correia made no mistakes so the final looked like a quick and easy walk for Correia. But after the first 4 racks, Telfer got to the table and cleared two times in a row to set his mark in the match. Correia was warned. Telfer should not be underestimated. From the time on when Telfer opened his account on the scoreboard, he played stronger and used his chances. However, he missed a few critical shots at bad times during the match. Each time when he got closer to Correia, he missed a makable ball and Correia kept the distance to him. In the end, Correia finished Telfer with 8:6 which brought him his 8th title at European Championships. Jim Telfer is a very deserved silver medallist today.

In the ladies division, the final match was an all-German affair between Susanne Wessel and Karin Michl. Both ladies have eliminated teammates in their semi-final match so all four medals in the ladies division today went to Team Germany. Both players Wessel and Michl have won numerous medals on European Championships. However, Wessel has much more titles in her portfolio. She won 6 Gold Medals whiLe Michl only has one title so far. That also showed in the final match. Michl started out strong and got a 2 point lead at 2:0. But then she missed shots and gave chances to Wessel who is too experienced to not use those. Wessel shocked Michl and took the next 4 racks to turn the score to 4:2. Then Michl pulled one back from her to go to 3:4 but Wessel again created a 2-point-lead to get on the hill at 5:3. Then she took a timeout. Coming back from that, she overran Michl once again and won the next rack and the match with 6:3.

Dirk Stenten won the 8-ball 7:3 over Ronnie Oldervik to turn the score 1:0 for the Germans. But then Vegar Kristiansen won the 9-ball 8:6 over Guido Gerber and Christian Johannesen won surprisingly clear in the 10-ball match with 7:3 over Reiner Wirsbitzki. That brought the Norwegians into the team final where they will play the Dutch team. Team The Netherlands had won their semi-final over Team Finland clearly with 2:0. In the ladies division, the final match will be played between teams Germany and France. Bronze medals go to Italy and Portugal.

Azar and Bolfelli win the 8-ball individuals

Barbara Bolfelli and Senharip Azar

Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) and Senharip Azar (SWE) have just won the Dynamic Billard European Championship titles in the 8-ball individuals.

Bolfelli met Susanne Wessel (GER) in the final match. Bolfelli, being the defending Champion, played more self-confident from the very beginning. It seemed as if Wessel could not get a foot on the ground. She either missed balls or ran out of position. In the end, the final match turned out to be a disaster for Wessel. Bolfelli destroyed Wessel’s hopes for the title with a more than clear 5:0 victory.

In the senior’s division, newcomer Senharip Azar played his first year in the seniors Championships. He came to the final with an amazing 7:1 victory over Dino Cerimagic (BIH) in the semi-final. In the other semi-final, Dirk Stenten (GER) overpowered Csaba Nagy (HUN) 7:3. The final between Stenten and Azar turned out to be a one-man show from Azar. Stenten could not finish his racks and almost always left a chance for Azar to take over the table. That’s what cost him the title in the end. Azar was the better player today and rightfully won the final match with 7:3.

Michl, Kristiansen and Team Netherlands win Gold Medals

Karin Michl (GER) and Vegar Kristiansen (NOR) have won the Gold Medals in the 9-ball individuals at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for seniors and ladies.

Michl had to compete against Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) in the semi-final. She played rock solid and achieved a fully deserved 5:2 victory over the Italian top player. Her opponent in the final match, Anja Hehre (GER) ousted the defending Champion and teammate Susanne Wessel (GER) also with 5:2 in the semi-final. The final match between Michl and Hehre was packed with drama and excitement. After eight racks, the match went hill-hill. Then, Michl remained as focussed as one could get and pocketed ball after ball for a 5:4 victory and the title. „I have practiced a lot before I came here and I hoped for a chance to win a title, but I am absolutely overwhelmed that I have finally done it,“ said moved Michl after the match.

In the seniors division, we had a rematch between Kristiansen and Henrique Correia (POR). Earlier this week in the 10-ball competition, Correia won the final match between the two so Kristiansen was up for revenge now. The final match went back and forth. A few unlucky scratches from Correia brought Kristiansen in the lead. He kept that advantage and took the match and the title with 9:6. „I played great in 10-ball and I lost; I played great in 8-ball and I lost. In 9-ball, I played not so great but I have won the title“, said Kristiansen with a smile after the match.

In the team competition earlier today, the Dutch Team conquered the Gold Medal for the first time in years. They defeated team Finland in the final with 2:1. 15 teams have announced for the competition in total. The way for the Dutch team started with a 2:1 victory over team Sweden. the Scandinavians are usually known to show up with a strong contingency. However, this year the Dutch got the better of them. The next step was defeating team Italy 3:0 in the winners qualification round. Then, team Austria was the net opponent. They had a bit the statute of the „dark horses“ in the team competition since they ousted last year’s champion team Germany and favorite team Portugal one after the other. But the Dutch team, consisting of Rene Peeters, Gijs Van Helmond and Jesse Thehu prove again to be too strong for the Austrians. 3:0 was the clear result in favor of the Ducth team which booked them a seat in the final match. The opponent there was team Finland. The Finnish seniors with Sami Karttunen, Jouni Nykanen and Marko Hartikainen began their journey with a 2:1 victory over team Croatia. Then, their neighbors from Norway had to fall. 2:1 was again the final score in favor of the Finnish guys. In the winner’s qualification round, Finland surprisingly defeated team Portugal with 2:1. In the semi-final, team Italy was defeated with 2:1 by the Finnish. That booked them a seat in the final against the Dutch. The final match started quite furious. Jesse Thehu defeated Sami Karttunen in 10-ball extremely clear with 7:1 and brought the first point to The Netherlands. At this point in time, Rene Peeters was struggling against Marko Hartikainen in 9-ball. He had been in the lead but suddenly Hartikainen overtook him and it looked like he could snatch the match off Peeters. At a score of 6:5 for Hartikainen it was Gijs van Helmond who played an amazingly strong 8-ball match and sank the needed balls for the Dutch victory, defeating Jouni Nykanen with 7:4. The Gold Medal was won by the Dutch team. The Silver Medal went to team Finland. The Bronze medallists were team Italy and team Austria.

The final medal table displays Germany in the lead, followed by Portugal and Italy.

That concludes the coverage of the Dynamic Billard European Championships 2014 for Seniors and Ladies. We will be back with more action from Portoroz next week with the Euro-Tour for Men and Women.

Cerimagic among top 32 in 9-ball

Dino Cerimagic (BIH) is among the top 32 players in the 9-ball individuals.

Victories over Jesse Thehu (NED) 9:7, Dirk Schwedes (GER) 9:6, Zdenko Lisic (SVK) 9:5 and Robert Gronli (NOR) 9:5 brought Cerimagic in the round of the last 16 players where he faced Henrique Correia (POR). The Portuguese is definitely favored in this match. However, Cerimagic should not be underestimated.

Germany’s Reiner Wirsbitzki ousted Julien Livens (BEL) in the round of the last 32 players with 9:5. Last year’s runner-up Johny van Rijkel (BEL) met Manuel Pereira (POR), another hot favorite in the round of the final 16 players. All those matches were still played late at night.

In the ladies division, Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) defeated defending Champion Susanne Wessel (GER) 5:4 and went into the semi-final match undefeated. She and Anja Hehre (GER) are now waiting for their opponents in the round of the final four players. They will come from the matches between Karin Michl (GER) v Patrizia Ignesti (ITA) and Ann-Sofie Löfgren (SWE) v Susanne Wessel (GER).

Just as last week in the youth Championship, drug testing was performed by the European Pocket Billiard Federation EPBF. Two players were randomly picked and the results will be published as soon as they are known.

Due to delays in the matches today, the time schedule was amended by the EPBF Sports Director Anamaria Matesic (CRO). The finals of the team competition as well as the finals of the 9-ball individuals will be played tomorrow.

The Dynamic Billard European Championships 2014 for Seniors and Ladies will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET with matches of the team competition in the first rounds. The team final will be played at 12:30 CET. Then, the 9-ball competition will continue with the finals scheduled to begin at 18:30 CET.

Wirsbitzki Over Correia in Seniors Straight Pool

Reiner Wirsbitzki from Germany is the new European Champion in straight pool seniors division. He defeated Henrique Correia (POR) with 100: 50 in the final match.

The final match was a one man show by Wirsbitzki. He had the better start and ran away with over 50 points after the first five innings. He never left a shot for Correia and took a comfortable 53:1 lead over the Portuguese. That gap proved to be too big for Correia to close. Correia was also not very lucky. When he tried to launch a comeback on Wirsbitzki, the cue ball scratched in the side pocket. Altogether, the clear victory for Wirsbitzki is very much deserved and displays his solid performance throughout the whole competition. The German took his third Gold Medal in the seniors after winning the 8-ball competition 2011 in Luxembourg and the 10-ball last year in Sarajevo. „This title was hard work for me“, stated Wirsbitzki after the final match, „I am tired and exhausted but also very happy“. „The title in straight pool means a lot to me. I have been a favorite quite some time but I never won it. Today, I knew it was going to be my final“. Tied for third were Rene Peeters (NED) and Kent Karlsson (SWE).

Earlier today, the day started with the 10-ball competition. 79 players in the seniors and 15 ladies started the matchday. Just like in straight pool, the defending Champion lost his first match quite unexpectedly. Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER) received a 6:7 defeat from Rene Peeters (NED). He had to go to the loser’s side where he qualified for the single elimination round of the final 64 players. There, he will play Csaba Nagy (HUN) who defeated Arto Taavila (FIN) 7:5 and Tom Eksell (SWE) 7:1. Last year’s runner-up Vegar Kristiansen (NOR) was a bit more consistent. He won his first match 7:1 teammate Tom Bjerke (NOR) and has now gotten Mika Maatta (FIN) in the next match. One big name in European senior pool, Henrique Correia (POR) lost completely unexpected 3:7 to Jorgen Nilsen (NOR). He then whitewashed Tomaz Benedicic (SLO) 7:0 to also enter the final elimination stage where he will have to deal with Magnus Vesterlund (SWE). Surprise player Rado Doroslovac (SLO) won 7:4 over Marco Devruscian (ITA) before he had to give in with 6:7 to Frank Willner (GER). He was lucky and received a walk-over on the loser’s side. He was drawn against Espen Saltnes (NOR) in the next round. The single elimination of the final 64 players will be played tomorrow at 09:00 and 10:45 CET.

In the ladies division, defending Champion Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) had a walk-over in the first round. She then made short work of Anja Hehre (GER) and taught her a lesson 5:1. Bolfelli will meet Susanne Wessel (GER) in the winner’s qualification round. Wessel comes with two impressive victories under her belt, 5:1 over Ilona Zalmanova (CZE) and 5:0 over Patrizia Ignesti (ITA). The other match in the winner’s qualification round will be played between Karin Michl (GER) and Cristina Moscetti (ITA). On the loser’s side, among others Ann-Sofie Löfgren (SWE), Nathalie Rohmer (FRA) and Monika Oeschger (SUI) struggle to stay in the competition.

The Dynamic Billard European Championships 2014 for Seniors and Ladies will continuetomorrow morning at 09:00 CET with matches of the 10-ball individuals.
