It was to be an exciting conclusion to the 2018 BWPPA tour at the Predator Cues British 9-ball Championship. Before the first ball was struck, four players could claim the top spot by the end of the weekend.
A wintery Aylesbury was the setting for the final stop of the season as 14 players embarked on the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy. Among them local lad Will Smee made his first appearance on the tour. The big guns of the tour all enjoyed excellent performances in their opening matches. In the early stages we saw a classic, between Roy Kimberley and Danny Luton, with Luton following up his 7-2 win over Adam Pearson, with a dramatic 7-5 win over Kimberley.
Elsewhere Daniel Lee began his campaign with a 7-3 win over Tony Southern, Lee then followed that with an impressive 7-1 win over wheelchair 8-ball World Champion Dave Beaumont. Ireland’s wheelchair World 9-ball Champion began his quest for the no.1 spot with wins over Matthew Lester, Darren Taylor and Danny Luton.
In the one loss side of the draw there was some intriguing matches. Birmingham’s Adam Pearson, beat local wheelchair cuesport veteran Chris Brown 6-3, Matthew Lester was 3-0 down against Frankie Gillen. Gillen came through a 6-4 winner, taking the last two racks of the match. Meanwhile Tony Southern and Roy Kimberley progressed into the losers’ qualifier with 6-0 and 6-1 wins over the South Yorkshire duo Gary Swift and Darren Taylor respectively.
Kimberley was to face Beaumont, who despite his heavy defeat to Daniel Lee has enjoyed arguably his best run of form since joining the BWPPA tour. In the end it was Kimberley who progressed with a 6-3 win.
On the opposite side of the draw Southern was to face Danny Luton. The match went all the way down to the deciding rack, with Luton clinching a 6-5 win.
The semi-finals were filled with excitement, as the race for the no.1 spot was hotting up. Daniel Lee knew that he had to win the championship, and hope Roy Kimberley beat Dinsmore if he was to retain his position as no.1. The atmosphere was made even tenser with the matches being played on adjacent tables.
The second semi-final between Kimberley and Dinsmore was to conclude first, with “the Sandman” rolling back the years to claim a 7-5 victory. By this time the other semi-final between Lee and Danny Luton was approaching a deciding rack. It was Luton who was to pot the winning 9-ball. Meaning that Fred Dinsmore would end the season as the BWPPA no.1 despite not making the final.
The final between Kimberley and Luton showed why both players have remained at the top of wheelchair cuesports over the last three decades. Roy Kimberley was to celebrate his first main event win for a number of years, with a 7-4 win.
In the Challenge Cup sponsored by the World Pool Series, there was a three horse race for top spot. In the opening round Gary Swift’s 5-2 win over Matthew Lester (+2) and Frankie Gillen’s (+2) 5-2 win over Chris Brown (+2). Meant that only Keith Hance could deny Gillen Challenge Cup top spot in his returning season.
Following a dramatic 5-4 victory over Tony Southern, Hance (+1) set up a semi-final with Gillen to decide who would take the Poison cue and top spot. It was to be Gillen (+2) who would take it with a 5-3 win over Hance (+1).
In the final Gillen was to come up against Dave Beaumont who had defeated Gary Swift and Darren Taylor. Beaumont took his second successive Challenge Cup with a 5-3 win over Gillen (+2).

Over the weekend of 11-12 August 2018, the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy opened it’s doors to cuesport players of all disabilities for the inaugural Kamui Open Disability 9-ball Championship. It was the first event of it’s kind, hosted by the British Wheelchair Pool Players Association.
Before matches got underway, everyone who was in attendance observed a minute’s applause for Mick Langley, who sadly passed away shortly before the event took place. Langley was the gold medalist in the wheelchair snooker event at the Seoul Paralympic Games in 1988. The last time cue sports were included in the Paralympics.
In addition to the BWPPA tour players who entered the event, there was also two regulars from the WDBS snooker tour, Blake Munton and Josh Morrison who both impressed, joining them was the Irish Wheelchair (English) 8-ball player Liam Casey, as well as ambulant player Dave Lango.
Casey had a tough introduction to the larger table game. He came through a hill-hill opening match against Frankie Gillen (7-6) before facing BWPPA no.1 Daniel Lee, who had earlier beaten Lango 7-2 in his first match. Lee’s experience told as he beat Casey 7-1. Grimsby’s Munton started his weekend well, with impressive performances over BWPPA tour regulars Matthew Lester (7-3) and Chris Brown (7-3). Elsewhere in the early stages recently crowned wheelchair English 8-ball Champion Dave Beaumont returned to 9-ball with a 7-3 loss to Roy Kimberley.
Tony Southern came through a tense opener, with a 7-5 win over Danny Luton. Southern followed up with an impressive 7-0 win over Morrison.
It was a 9.30am start on the Sunday morning to decide who would progress from the double elimination stage of the main event. Southern and Luton were to meet again, but this time the Bristolian Luton won 7-5 to progress into the semi-finals. In the losers side of the draw Darren Taylor continued his impressive run of form beating Munton 7-2.
In the semis Lee and Kimberley demonstrated why they have been two of the most prolific winners on the BWPPA tour over the last 15 years, as Lee beat Luton 7-1 and Kimberley beat Taylor 7-2.
In the final it was the BWPPA no.1 Lee who took the title with a 7-2 win over “the Sandman” this rivalry will surely grow as we reach the business end of the BWPPA season, and into next.

In the Challenge Cup Casey had showed promise as he beat Brown 5-2. Elsewhere Lester beat Morrison, also 5-2. While Beaumont beat Lango 5-0, before an impressive 5-1 win over Casey in the semi-finals.
Munton continued to impress, with a 5-4 win over Lester in the semi-finals. In the final it was Beaumont’s experience that told in the end, as he beat Munton 5-1.
The BWPPA tour continues with the Tiger Cues Warrington British 10-ball Championship, at Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley 15-16th September.

17 players arrived at Aylesbury for the 2018 GNO Players Championship. Among them were a number of players returning from a few years away from the BWPPA tour, and Fred Dinsmore. Competing in his first tournament since being crowned the wheelchair World 9-ball Champion.
The early stages through up some great clashes. A dramatic encounter between local cue man Chris Brown and Adam Pearson, which saw Pearson clinch the decider for a 7-6 victory. Frankie Gillen returned to the tour after 3 years as a recipient of the BWPPA’s new sponsorship scheme. His campaign got off to a dream start with a 7-0 win over Lee Woodward.
Among the heavyweights “the Sandman” Roy Kimberley survived an early scare against Gloucester potter Darren Staddon, Kimberley came through 7-5. UK no.1 Daniel Lee started the season with a 7-0 win over Iffy Hussain, while Dinsmore beat South Yorkshire’s Darren Taylor 7-2.
In the winners qualification round Danny Luton beat Dinsmore 7-5. In the losers side there were a few surprises. Taylor beat Gillen 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals on his return to the BWPPA tour. In a result that sent ripples around the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy the potter from the Potteries Dave Beaumont beat Dinsmore 6-3 to knock the World Champion out of the main event.
The quarter-final draw for the main event took place early the next morning, and we were back underway. No doubt boosted by his exploits the day before Beaumont came through a hill-hill thriller against Luton for a place in the semi-finals of the main event for the first time. The South Yorkshire duo of Gary Swift and Taylor faced tough opponents in Tony Southern and Roy Kimberley respectfully. With Southern and Kimberley heading into the semis. Lee continued his dominance with a 7-1 win over Craig Welsh, to keep his hopes of a fourth straight BWPPA title alive.
It was to be Lee and Kimberley who would meet in the final, for the second successive time after both recording comprehensive wins over Beaumont and Southern respectively. As expected the match was a dramatic encounter between 2 of the greatest wheelchair pool players ever in the UK, which eventually saw Daniel Lee win 7-5 for his fourth BWPPA tour victory on the spin.

The Challenge Cup sponsored by the World Pool Series was open to all players who didn’t reach the quarter-finals of the main event. Players also receive handicaps based on their playing ability and disability. Dinsmore who had been suffering from a migraine beat Gloucester’s Staddon 5-3 to meet Gillen in the semi-finals. Staddon who hadn’t played on the BWPPA tour for many years before the GNO Players Championship really impressed, as a recipient of the new BWPPA sponsorship scheme, he could be one to watch.
Another recipient of the sponsorship scheme Keith Hance faced last years Challenge no.1 Matthew Lester. In the end it was Lester’s experience that saw him through to the final. Hance who mainly plays UK 8-ball is another player with a lot of potential. Former BWPPA Challenge no.1 Gillen lost 5-3 to Dinsmore in the other semi-final.
The Irishman went on to take the Challenge Cup with a 5-3 victory over Lester.

There was a tinge of sadness in the air at the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy in Aylesbury, for the BWPPA Predator British 9-ball Championship. A few weeks before the event everyone involved with the British Wheelchair Pool Players Association heard of BWPPA stalwart Nick Oliver’s passing. As the first scheduled matches lagged for break there was a clear sense that there was an atmosphere in the air that it was appropriately the end of another season on the worlds largest wheelchair pool tour.
The action got underway following the observation of 30 seconds of applause in memory of Nick, nicknamed “The Great N.O”. Daniel Lee had a tough opening match, he was pushed all the way by his Great Britain Nation Continental Cup team-mate Dave Beaumont before Lee came through a 7-6 winner. In his previous match Beaumont beat Ifty Hussain 7-2, Hussain from Birmingham was returning to wheelchair cuesports for the first time in a number of years.
BWPPA veterans Danny Luton, Roy Kimberley and Tony Southern all had solid performances in their opening matches of the weekend. For Kimberley, Southern and Lee it was significant as a few days after this event they travel to Finland for the wheelchair World 9-ball Championship in Tampere. Chris Brown, the oldest player on the BWPPA tour returned for his second event of the season, following defeats to Matthew Lester and Beaumont, Brown would be back to compete in the Challenge Cup the following day.
As we approached the close of the first days play, on the losers’ side of the draw there was a tense encounter between Newport’s Craig Welsh and Luton. It looked like it was going all the way to a decider, but Luton, who was sent to the losers side following a 7-3 defeat to Lee sunk the 9 in the penultimate rack to take it 7-5. As if that wasn’t enough the drama was cranked up a notch in the other losers’ qualifier. Beaumont taking the hill-hill decider against Southern 7-6, from 4-6 down, after Southern had lost 7-3 to Kimberley.
In the semi-finals Lee booked his place in yet another final with a classy 7-1 win over Beaumont. In the 2nd semi-final between old rivals Kimberley and Luton, it was Kimberley who came through a 7-4 winner.
The final lived up to all expectations. The match went all the way to a tense hill-hill finish. Kimberley missed a combination on the 9, which allowed Lee off the hook; he cleared the table to complete a hat-trick of main event titles.
In the Challenge event Brown (+3) beat Lester (+2) 5-4 to book his place in a BWPPA event final for the first time. Brown met Southern, who came through a hill-hill semi-final with Welsh 5-4. It was Southern. In the final, with Brown receiving 3 racks start. There was yet another decider in this drama filled weekend, with Southern taking it 5-4.
Lester was confirmed as the no.1 in the Challenge rankings following Beaumont’s 7-6 win over Southern in the main event, thus making him ineligible for the Challenge Cup.

All the players were given goody bags from our tour sponsors Kamui. Daniel Lee collected the beautiful Predator 8k3 cue as the no.1 player in the main event rankings. Matthew Lester collected a Poison Strychnine Cue as the no.1 in the challenge cup rankings.
Further prizes of a Predator Roadline cue, Predator BK3 break cue, Predator Sport cue case and a Predator Blak cue case were won by players who ended the season in the top 6 in the main event rankings.
Daniel Lee and Matthew Lester would both like to dedicate their performances to Nick Oliver.

The BWPPA season approached the midway point as the players arrived at the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury. It was to be an action packed weekend of pool, as in addition to the Talisman Billiards British 10-ball Championship (tour stop 3 of the regular season) there was the small matter of who would win the qualifier to be the last man onto the Great Britain Nation-Continental Cup team.
Before that could be decided the main event of the Talisman British 10-ball Championship got underway. The tour welcomed back Chris Brown who returned to the BWPPA tour for the first time since 2015. Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore also returned to the tour after missing the first 2 tour stops of 2017, as did Aslam Abubaker fresh from winning the WEPF English 8-ball pool World Championship for wheelchair players in Blackpool.
Abubaker who won the Simonis Grand Prix main event in May got off to a flyer with a 7-0 win over Birmingham’s Adam Pearson. He followed that up with a 7-4 win over Daniel Lee. That defeat sent the defending British 10-ball Champion and UK no.1 into the losers bracket. Elsewhere in the first round tie between Fred Dinsmore and Craig Welsh, Dinsmore came through in the end 7-4. Dinsmore was then involved in a tense hill-hill battle with Danny Luton, which he came through 7-6. He followed that with an impressive 7-1 win over Abubaker.
Into the one-loss side of the draw, in the top half it was Abubaker who advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4 win over Dave Beaumont. In the bottom half Lee did it the hard way with a 6-3 win over Nick Oliver. Before a 6-2 win over Luton, and then a 6-4 win over Tony Southern to join Abubaker in the semi-finals.
As expected both semi-finals were close affairs with Lee beating Dinsmore 7-5 in a repeat of last years final. In the second semi-final Abubaker defeated old rival Roy Kimberley 7-5.
In the final, a missed 7-ball from Abubaker allowed Lee to step in and take the opening rack. In the next Abubaker returned the favour by pouncing on a missed 6-ball from Lee to level the scores. The high standard continued, and in the end it was Lee who was crowned Talisman British wheelchair 10-ball Champion with a 7-5 win over Abubaker.
In the Challenge Cup sponsored by the World Pool Series Danny Luton overhauled a 3 rack start to defeat Matt Lester 5-3.

The BWPPA tour now looks forward to a double header at Escape Pool Bar, Barnsley from 15-17th September as we have the Nation-Continental Cup. A team contest styled on the famous Mosconi Cup, but this time it’s team Great Britain taking on Team EUROPE. Dave Beaumont won the qualifier for the last spot on the Great Britain team. He will join Daniel Lee, Tony Southern, Roy Kimberley and Aslam Abubaker. The Europeans are the favourites on paper with a strong team consisting of Sweden’s Henrik Larsson, Finland’s Jouni Tahti, Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore, Belguim’s Kurt Deklerck and Poland’s Emil Malanowski.
The Nation-Continental Cup will be held over the same weekend as tour stop 4 of the BWPPA tour, the Kamui 9-ball Shootout. Where we are expecting our largest field for a number of years.

The BWPPA held its 3rd event of the 2015 season on the 11th/12th July with the Talisman British 10-ball Championships held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville.
The Main Event saw a smaller field than usual with 10 players entering, although we also had John White and Chris Brown attend the challenge event on the Sunday, as they could not play in the main event due to other commitments.
Prior to the Main Event Dave Beaumont was congratulated for retaining his English 8-ball Pool World Wheelchair title in Blackpool recently.
In conditions much hotter than normal, the dress code had to be relaxed for the comfort of the players. Despite the heat, there was some excellent pool on show as usual.
Fred Dinsmore was keen to extend his lead at the top of the rankings, but he knew that any slip ups and Tony Southern and others would be closing in on him in his bid to be no.1 in the rankings at the end of the season, and take with it the beautiful cue donated by tour sponsors Predator Cues.
As the final 10-ball of the weekend was potted it was Dinsmore who took home the spoils with victory over Aslam Abubaker.
Following his bye into round 2, Dinsmore started off with a hard fought 7-5 win over Daniel Lee, who is always a hard opponent to get past. Dinsmore then followed this up with an equally hard 7-5 win over Beaumont. This sent Dinsmore into the semi-final, where he beat Roy Kimberley 7-4 to again make the final.
Following a first round bye, Abubaker beat Craig Welsh 7-2, then old rival Tony Southern 7-3 to reach the semi-finals, and there he faced Danny Luton, who himself had recorded 4 good wins to get that far. It was Abubaker who was in devastating form and won 7-2.
The Main event final between Dinsmore and Abubaker was an unusually one-sided match. The game turned in the 4th rack at 2-1 to Dinsmore, when Abubaker went in off. In the end, it was Dinsmore who retained his title with a 7-2 victory.
In the latest BWPPA Rankings, Dinsmore is now 35 points ahead of Southern at the top, and whilst it is now looking like a 2 man race, with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, the next event should be a great one.
The Challenge Cup final was won by Beaumont who beat Lee 5-3.
A special mention to seasoned member of our tour Matt Lester who had a great 5-1 win over White in the challenge cup, and was leading Lee 4-1 in the semi-finals before losing 5-4.

Johnny Archer put a stop to a nine-match, loss-side winning streak by Jonathan Pinegar to go undefeated and win the Side Pocket 9-Ball Open Championship on the weekend of October 25-26. The $2,000-added event, held three times a year in the final weeks of October, February, and June, drew 80 entrants to Side Pocket Billiards in Shreveport, LA. A 16-entrant Ring Game on Friday night was won by Gary Abood, with Charlie Bryant and Joe Barnes finishing second and third, respectively.
Archer and Zack Sanderson faced off in the hot seat match of the main event, after both had chalked up 7-5 wins over C.J. Wiley and Charlie Bryant, respectively. Sanderson put up a fight in the struggle for the hot seat, and forced a deciding game, which was won by Archer.
Over on the loss side, 'Hennessee from Tennessee' Pinegar was hard at work on his long trek back to the finals. He'd been awarded a bye in the opening round of play, and then defeated Jerry Moore, before Shawn Putnam sent him to the losers' bracket 7-5. On the loss side, he eliminated Derek Cantu, Clint Freeman, Yang Yim and Chris Brown to advance into the money rounds (9-12). Victories over Wesley Barnes (7-5) and Tony Barrington (7-4) set him up to face Bryant, coming over from the winners' side semifinals. Wiley drew Joe Barnes, who'd gotten by Gary Abood 7-3 and spoiled Pinegar's hopes for a re-match, with a 7-5 win over Putnam.
It was Wiley and Pinegar who advanced to the quarterfinals; Wiley 7-4 over Barnes, and Pinegar 7-5 over Bryant. Pinegar took the quarterfinal match 7-4 over Wiley, and got a shot at Archer with a 7-5 victory over Sanderson in the semifinals. Archer, though, known to be never more dangerous than he is with a finish line in sight, took the opening set of a potential true double elimination final, giving up only three racks and claiming the event title.
The BWPPA held its 3rd event of the 2014 season on the 19th/20th July with the Talisman British 10-ball Championships held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville, this event is named after one of our main tour sponsors.
We had a record turn out with 22 players entering the event, including Aleksandr Prokopiev who again made the 7,000 mile trip from Yakusa, Russia. We welcomed back Darren Staddon after a 5 year absence, and welcomed 2 new players to the tour, Dave Beaumont and Chris Brown, and it would be the recently crowned English Pool 8-Ball World Wheelchair Champion Beaumont who had a fantastic first event, just missing out on the top prize.

During the event all the players signed a card to be sent to tour patron Dynamite Darren Appleton and his bride to be Angie Tran, to celebrate their upcoming wedding.
In sweltering conditions that led to the relaxation of the normal dress code, the event made a great start with some excellent pool on show as usual at these events.
Aslam Abubaker was keen to extend his lead at the top of the rankings, but he knew that any slip ups and Tony Southern and Roy Kimberley would be closing in on him in his bid to be no 1 in the rankings at the end of the season, and take with it the beautiful Ikon cue donated by tour sponsors Predator Cues.
As you can see from the photos noted below, the venue is under going a refresh, and each table has been covered in a beautiful cloth from tour sponsors Simonis, to give an excellent playing experience, unmatched in Wheelchair pool, outside of the EPC and WPC.
As the final 10-ball of the weekend was potted it was Dinsmore who took home the spoils with victory over Beaumont. This was a closely contested match which could have gone either wy.
Following his bye into round 2, Dinsmore started off with a hard fought 7-4 win over Gary Swift, who is always a hard opponent to get past. Dinsmore then followed this up with an equally hard 7-4 win over Phil Hendrickson. This sent Dinsmore into the quarter-final, where he won a third successive match by the same 7-4 score against Daniel Lee.
In the same half of the draw Abubaker had convincing wins in his first 2 matches, 7-0 v Mark Parsons, and 7-1 v Shaun Madin, to also reach the knockout phase, where he beat Swift 7-4.
In the other half of the draw, Southern hammered Staddon 7-0 then dispatched Keith Hance 7-3 to reach the quarter-final, where he beat Hendrickson 7-4.
Following a first round 7-2 lost to Lee, Beaumont won 3 matches on the losers side to reach the quarter finals, and he faced Kimberley, who himself had recorded 2 good wins over Prokopiev and Lee. It was Beaumont who was in devastating form and won 7-2.
In the first semi-final Dinsmore beat Abubaker 7-6, and it was as close as the score suggests.
In the other semi-final it was Southern against Beaumont, both players played solid pool, but it was Beaumont who was the more clinical taking his place in the final with a 7-4 win.
The Main event final between Dinsmore and Beaumont was a great match, with some excellent clearances. The game turned in the 9th rack at 4-4, when Beaumont potted the 10 but went in off. In the end it was Dinsmore who took his first BWPPA title since 2012 with a 7-4 victory.
In the rankings Southern is now 30 points behind Abubaker at the top of the rankings, with it now looking like a 2 man race, but with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, the next event should be a great one at the ‘Escape Pool Bar’ in Barnsley in September.
In the Challenge Cup Final Danny Luton beat Frankie Gillen 5-2.
