Johnny Griffin was the big story at the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour Fall 9-Ball Event, going undefeated in the 48-player, amateur 9-ball division, besting John McDowell in the final, 7-4. Filipino Champion, Edward “Ed” Acaba, captured his 38-player open 9-ball division, defeating Houston’s Blaine Barcus in overtime, 7-6. Congratulations to both players, who captured their first Poison Lone Star Tour event titles!

In the amateur 9-ball division, Brazoria, Texas, APA franchise owner Johnny Griffin came out firing with wins over Bodie Scott, Chris Young, Jack Cavalier, and Tony Benestante, 7-3. Also on his way to the final four winners’ side, local Filipino player, Rudy Pascal, took down Chris Lord, Josh White, Rafael Garcia, and Brock Temel, 7-1. Sonny Bosshamer made quick work of Steve Williams, 7-4, Bob DeTuncq, 7-3, and Victor Belmares, 7-5, while Marvin Diaz ousted David Chow, 7-4, Teddy Hernandez, 7-4, and Gerardo Alvarez, 7-3. On the one loss side, after losing his first match to Williams, 7-3, John McDowell won four consecutive matches, eliminating Young, Hernandez, Tony Scott, and Alberto DeLeon. Pete Charles was also on the come-back trail, ousting Will Felder and Chris Rogers, while John Murphy took down Rafael Garcia and Chuck Adams, only to succumb to J.C. Torres, 5-3. Cavalier made a run for the money, taking down Jacob Watson, 5-3, and Pablo Trinidad, 5-4. McDowell went on to eliminate Temel and Charles by the same score, 5-4, while Charles ended Benestante. It was Torres over Alvarez, 5-3, and Belmares over Cavalier, 5-4. As the one-loss side, final four took shape, on the east side, Bosshamer bested Diaz, 7-5, and Griffin dusted off Pascal, 7-2. For his seventh, consecutive victory on the one-loss side, McDowell bested Diaz, 5-3, while Torres upset Pascal, 5-1. The hot seat witnessEd Griffin edge-out Bosshamer, 7-6, while McDowell logged his eighth, consecutive match win against Torres, 5-4. McDowell overcame Bosshamer, 5-2, for a record-breaking 9 consecutive match wins, to meet Griffin in the final. Griffin stopped McDowell just short of the goal line, ending his run in the first and final match, 7-4. Congratulations to Johnny Griffin on capturing his first-ever, Poison Lone Star Tour event!
In the open 9-ball division, world renowned Filipino player, Ed Acaba made his way through the winners’ side defeating Will Felder, 9-8, Doug Young, 9-1, and Amar Kang, 9-6, while Denis Strickland bested Sonny Bosshamer, Jack Cavalier, and Brock Temel, 9-7. Ernesto Bayaua, determined to win his third event of the year, took out Pete Charles, 9-4, Bodie Scott, 9-1, Jacob Watson, 9-7, and Aldo Rosso, 9-3, while Danny Lee overcame Josh White, Chuck Adams, 9-1, and Blaine Barcus, 9-8. On the one-loss side, Young bested Barcus, and Kang eliminated Johnny Griffin, 9-4. Barcus went on to defeat Strickland, 7-6, while Lee upset Kang, 7-5. Back on the east side, hot seat action witnessed Acaba and Bayau, battling it out to the bitter end. An impeccable safety on the one ball, by Acaba, resulted in ball-in-hand, and the demise of Bayaua, 9-8. On the on-loss side, Barcus demolished Lee, 7-1, and followed up with Bayaua, 7-2. After 5 consecutive match wins, Barcus had earned himself a shot at the title. Acaba and Barcus teed off in the finals. The first set was tight and grueling, and play was nearly flawless. Towards the end, Barcus pulled ahead to win, 9-6. In overtime, although Barcus was the first to reach the hill, Acaba emerged victorious, 7-6. Marc Garza blazed through 42 open 8-ball players this past Saturday, November 1st, 2015, at the PxP Tour Finale held at Bogies Billiards & Sports Bar in Houston, Texas. Seasoned player and tour newcomer Garza took no prisoners as he forged ahead to victory and a piece of the almost $3,000 purse. Action commenced around 2pm with top notch players battling their way towards the finish line. Winding down on the winners’ side, “The Machine” Eugene Browning bested Chase Rudder 4-0, and newcomer Steven Wyatt fell to Darryl Amos, 4-0. Dallas’ “Little Al” Al Mason lost to Garza, 4-1, while Ken Laney sent T.J Ortiz to the loser’s side, 4-3. Browning bested Amos, 4-0, while Garza sent Laney west, 4-1. After losing to Amos in the third round on the winners’ side, 4-1, Danny Lee won an impressive 6 consecutive matches, reigning over John Winter, 4-0, Jose Irizarry, 4-2, Al Mason, 4-1, Amos and Ortiz, by the same score of 4-0. A similar upset in the same round included T.J. Ortiz over John Newsome, 4-1, with Newsome returning to claim 5 consecutive match wins over Will Felder and Ryan Holley, 4-0 each set, Chase Rudder, 4-3, Brian Rosenbaum, 4-1, and Laney, 4-0. Browning and Garza teed off for the hot seat while Lee and Newsome faced off on the one loss side Garza defeated Browning, 4-2, and Lee eliminated Newsome, 4-1. In the finals, Garza squeezed by Lee in the first set, 4-3.

Former U.S. Amateur National Champion Ernesto Bayaua decimated the 55 player field at the Poison by Predator 8-Ball Tour Event (PxP Tour) held this past Saturday, September 6th, 2014, at the brand new Bogies Billiards West located in northwest Houston. Players hailed from Austin, Victoria, and San Antonio to compete in the 8-ball event that wrapped up in one day and paid out a generous $3,410. It was all business for Bayaua, taking down former Lone Star Tour Champion Andy Jethwa in the final, 4-1. It seemed like a difficult road for the veteran PxP player, but he handled it in stride. Bayaua bested Lupe Sanchez, 4-3, Blaine Barcus, 4-2, and Mike Alonzo, 4-1 while Ferrer went through Wendell Moser, 4-0, and newcomers Floyd Amador and Benny Nava, 4-3, 4-1, respectively. Alex Cardenas made his way to the final four winners’ side with wins over David Taylor, Danny Lee, 4-2, and Mike Singleton, 4-1. Jethwa took out Sonny Bosshamer, 4-1, David Chow, 4-0, and Manny Chau, 4-2. The next winners’ side round saw Bayaua beat Ferrer, 4-1, and Jethwa overcome Cardenas, 4-1. As the hot seat shaped up, the one loss side was well underway. Sylver Ochoa, who suffered a first round upset at the hands of Mike Singleton, 4-3, went on to win four consecutive matches until he was stopped by Joey Torres, 4-2. Torres, who suffered an early 4-2 loss to Chau, pressed on to the final four, but suffered a final blow by Lee, 4-2. Barcus and Chau faced off with Chau advancing, 4-2. Cardenas eliminated Lee while Chau made quick work of Ferrer. Back on the east side, Bayau took down Jethwa and secured the hot seat, 4-0, while Cardenas fell victim to Chau by the same. Jethwa tore through Chau, 4-1, for another stab at Bayaua. Jethwa, no stranger to the pressures of tournament play, brought his usual intensity and focus to the final table. After an unforced error by Bayaua, a struggling Jethwas secured his first game, bringing the score to 2-1. Despite his best efforts, the powerhouse Bayaua was simply too tought to overcome. Bayaua secure the next two, consecutive games, securing his first PxP Tour victory of the season, 4-1.

Houston local Jonathan Poon took the Lone Star Tour amateur 9-ball division by storm this past weekend, July 5th-6th, at the Lone Star Billiards Tour “Firecracker” Event held at Bogies Billiards in Houston, Texas, sponsored by Poison by Predator Cues, Delta-13, Ozone Billiards, Improve Your Shot.com, and the APA of North Harris County.
The 46 amateur player field featured top contenders including Sonny Bosshamer who reached the hot seat effortlessly with wins over newcomer Bobby Comegys, 7-4, and Brian Rosenbaum, 7-2. Poon came close with wins over Jack Cavalier, 7-2, and Bob Hayes, 7-4, but lost his hot seat bid to Steve Williams. Williams’ run included wins over Kenny Lucio, 7-6, newcomer Ray Lambeth, 7-3, and finally Poon, 7-4. This pitted Williams and Bosshamer for the hot seat, sending Poon to the west side where his work was cut out for him. He made his way through Comegys, 5-2, and squeezed by Hayes, 5-4, while Bosshamer handily secured the winners’ side over Williams, 7-1. Williams fell to Poon in the semi-finals, 7-2, but earned himself a respectable third place and his highest finish to date. Bosshamer was chomping at the bit as Poon made his way to the final table. The finals were a fight to the bitter end as Poon secured the first set, 7-2. Overtime cranked up and Bosshamer came alive. The score was tied at 4 when Poon broke and ran out to secure his second Lone Star Tour amateur division title.
The open division saw 37 entries featuring the toughest around. Main attractions included Billy Sharp, Chase Rudder, Manny Chau, Danny Lee, Sylver Ochoa, and Ernesto Bayaua. Bobby Perez was a final four surprise, facing off with Sylver Ochoa, while Chau teed off with Rudder on the bottom side. After suffering a 9-7 loss to Rudder, Sharp made his way through the crowd with wins over Chuck Adams, 7-1, and Danny Lee, 7-1. After early round losses, Brian Rosenbaum and John Newsome crossed paths on the one loss side, the outcome favoring Rosenbaum, 7-6. On the east side, Ochoa ousted Perez, 9-4, while Rudder escaped Chau, 9-8. On the one loss side, Chau narrowly escaped Rosenbaum, 7-6, while Sharp eliminated Perez, 7-3. Hot seat action saw Rudder defeat Ochoa, 9-6, while Chau overwhelmed Sharp, 7-2. It was Ochoa over Chau, 7-5, staging a rematch with Rudder. Ochoa came out firing, quickly ending the first set, 9-2. Rudder maintained his position, answering back in the final set, 7-4.

In an amazing display of talent beyond his young years, 14 year old Houston local Joey Torres blazed through a field of 37 players, going undefeated to win the Poison by Predator Tour Open 8-Ball event on June 8th, 2014, held at Bogies Billiards & Sports Bar in Houston, Texas. This was a third consecutive tournament win for Torres, winning two previous Lone Star Tour amateur events, upgrading Torres to “open division” player status.
From start to finish Torres played incredible, ousting a plethora of talent including Nick Hood, 4-0, Sonny Bosshamer, Marvin Diaz, 4-2, Danny Roland, 4-3, finishing up with contender Erik Renteria for the hot seat, 4-0. With a purse nearing $3,000, the event kicked off around 2:30pm along with the PxP Tour live stream and a string of deafening upsets. In the second round Bob McFerren defeated #2 ranked PxP player, Rafael Martinez, 4-3. Danny Roland leveled the playing field, taking a bite out of Ernesto Bayaua, 4-3, and Manny Chau, 4-1. Finding himself in the finals more often than not, Erik Renteria beat Kevin Clemons, 4-1, Kevin Bivens, 4-2, and David Taylor, 4-3, while former Lone Star Tour Champion Danny Lee won his bid for the final four with wins over Derrell Taylor, Bill Fain, 4-2, and Will Felder, 4-0. In the winners’ side final four, Renteria slid by Lee while Torres escaped Roland, by the same score, 4-3. Torres’ momentum proved insurmountable for Renteria who lost the hot seat match, 4-0. On the one loss side, Chau defeated Dalton Riley and Danny Lee while Martinez set the chart on fire with 8 consecutive wins, including knockouts over tour veterans Sonny Bosshamer and David Taylor. Martinez ended a great run by Roland, eliminated Chau, 4-1, and moved on to Renteria. In the first game, Renteria set the tone with a break and run. Martinez was down 2-1 until an unforced error by Renteria propelled him to a 4-2 victory. Torres and Martinez teed off for the final match. From start to finish Torres held complete control leaving Martinez a total of 3 offensive shots the entire set. Torres swept Martinez, 4-0. Aside from his tournament earnings, Torres won a paid 9-ball entry ($75) into the Space City Open to be held December 4th-7th, 2014 at Bogies Billiards & Sports Bar in Houston, Texas. Sylver Ochoa captured his ninth open division title while young gun Joey Torres took home his first-ever title in the amateur division at the Lone Star Spring 9-ball event held March 8th-9th, 2014, at Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas. Ochoa defeated the renowned Rafael Martinez, 9-7, in the final while Joey Torres came from behind to defeat hot seat winner Erik Renteria two sets, 7-6, and 5-0.
There were 71 players competing for over $6,000 in prize money at the second Lone Star stop of 2014. New to the tour, top ten Taiwanese player Kevin Cheng, the “Taiwanese Typhoon”, joined the illustrious, star studded field, but failed to make the cut. The open division yielded little surprise as Manny Chau teed off against Rafael Martinez, and Sylver Ochoa faced off with Danny Lee in the final four, winners’ side. After suffering a 9-1 defeat at the hands of Martinez, Cheng faced off with Chase Rudder, while Ernesto Bayaua battled Bill Fuller. Back on the east side, Martinez defeated Chau, 9-7, while Ochoa dusted off Lee, 9-2. On the west side, Bayaua eliminated Fuller, then Chau, 7-6, while Cheng overcame Rudder, but fell to Lee, 7-6. Ochoa oustEd Martinez for the hot seat, 9-3, while Bayaua eliminated Lee, 7-5. Determined to make a comeback, Martinez eliminated Bayaua, 7-5, for a rematch with Ochoa. Steady as ever, in the final match, Ochoa coasted his way to victory, 9-7.
There were 49 entries alone in the amateur division which saw Joey Torres lose his fourth round match to Will Felder, 7-6, and come back to win six straight sets, and his division. Danny Roland and Bob Guzik made their way to the final four on the winners’ side along with Will Felder and Erik Renteria. Roland overcame Guzik, 7-6, while Renteria sent Felder west, 7-5. On the east side, Torres was cleaning house. He eliminated Bobby Perez, 5-3, Guzik, 5-2, and Felder, 5-1. Meanwhile, it was Renteria over Roland for the hot seat, which pitted a first time match-up between Roland and Torres. The match was a coin toss as players traded racks, until Torres pull ahead and ended the battle, 5-4. Torres made his way back to challenge Renteria for the title. In the first race to 7, Renteria missed a crucial 8-ball shot and Torres took full advantage, winning the set, 7-6. The second set was a different story as Torres won the flip and broke. Renteria never made it to the table.

The Lone Star Tour’s amateur 9-ball division witnessed Houston’s own Marvin Diaz making his mark on tour, capturing the hot seat over Sonny “The Boss” Bosshamer, earning his first title in the second set of the true double elimination final, 5-3. Ernesto Bayaua took the open 9-ball division by storm, going undefeated, eclipsing Chase Rudder in the final, 9-7. There were 64 competitors at the inaugural 2014 Lone Star Billiards Tour 9-ball event, held on January 25th-26th, 2014 at Bogies Billiards in Houston, Texas. On Sunday, January 26th, there were an additional 23 female contenders who attended the WPBA sanctioned Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour 9-ball event, events which have now become “side-by-sides” with the Lone Star Tour offering competition weekends with a little something for everyone.
A vast number of Lone Star Tour players have witnessed drastic improvement in their games through consistent billiard competition. One case in point, Steve Williams finished his best ever (5th-6th) in this past weekend’s 58 player, amateur 9-ball field, reaching the final four winners’ side defeating Rich Rodriguez, Chuck Adams, and Yoko Joe along the way. Tour veteran Sonny Bosshamer waded through Richard Hernandez, Jerry Yang, and J.J. Manley. Contender Bobby Perez took down Jeff Kay, Alex Cardenas, and T.J. Klein while Marvin Diaz made quick work of Will Felder, Lupe Sanchez, and Brian Rosenbaum. Bosshamer defeated Williams, 7-4, and Perez fell to Diaz, 7-6. Diaz overcame Bosshamer in the hot seat match, 7-3. On the one loss side, after losing his third round match to Manley, Jonathan Poon won 6 consecutive matches, including a 5-3 win over Williams, while Daniel Herring lost his first match and won an incredible 8 straight matches to face off with Poon for a shot at third place. Poon lost to Herring, 5-3, and in turn was eliminated by Bosshamer, 5-2. Diaz was determined to take down his first win however Bosshamer had other plans. Bosshamer captured the first set, 7-4, but Diaz remained steadfast and determined, defeating Bosshamer in the second set, 5-3.
The open 9-ball division saw Bayaua annihilate a field of 41 players with wins over Erick Renteria, 9-5, and Victor Rojas, 9-5. Rudder had an impressive trek as well with wins over Justin Whitehead, 9-7, and Danny Lee, 9-3. Bayaua slid by Rudder in the hot seat match, 9-7, as the one loss side heated up with Marcus Flores winning an impressive 6 in a row after losing his first match to Yoko Joe. College Station’s Khahn Nguyen came on strong after a first round defeat at the hands of Brian Rosenbaum, winning 5 straight sets until he met his fate with Whitehead, 7-4. Lee eliminated Flores, 7-1, and in turn was sent packing by Whitehead, 7-5. Rudder made quick work of Whitehead, 7-1, but fell to Bayaua in the final, 9-7.
Special congratulations to junior billiard competitor Joey Bourgeois, Jr., on his top 16 finish in the 58 player, amateur field.
This year, each Lone Star Tour open division event will be a qualifier for the 2014 Space City Open, held December 4th-7th. Each open division winner will receive a “free” Space City Open 9-ball entry valued at $75.

The Poison by Predator tour held its third stop of the year on June 2, 2012 at Bogies Billiards in Houston, Texas. Bogies added a generous $1,000 to the players’ purse for the one-day, 9-ball event that paid out in excess of $3,500. The field consisted of 38 “b” players which included tour regulars Brent Thomas, Victor Rojas, Brian Rosenbaum, Valian Charles, Mark Fusina, Danny Lee, Anthony Demetro, and many more!
Match play began at approximately 2pm following the player auction. The swift races to 6, winner break format, produced numerous upsets throughout the day and into the evening. Brent Thomas took an early 6-5 hit from newcomer David Mendiola while Chris Penry upset tour regular Sonny Demetro. Mickey Woinicki ousted former champ Sonny “The Boss” Bosshamer 6-1 and Junior Jueco slid by Victor Rojas 6-4 to meet one another for the hot seat match. Rojas and Chauncey were defeated on the one-loss side by Demetro and Bosshamer respectively while Jueco secured the hot seat 6-1. Bosshamer punished Demetro and Woinicki to meet Jueco in the true double elimination final. Bosshamer took the first set 6-2 but lost his focus in overtime. Jueco ended the battle, 6-4, securing his first Poison Tour victory!

The Tiger Tour stop #3 of the season was changed at the last minute to a new venue Big Tyme Billiards , and we had 55 players show up, as there was some APA event going on the same day it took some of our players, but anyhow we played it down to the final 3 and they finished up along side the second chance event on Sunday. I will update you to the final 12 spots, all of whom cashed.
The winners side final 4 pitted Jason Pearce against Ernesto Bayaua and it was a thriller and the final score was 9-8, on the other half of the winners side Manny Chau put on an exhibition against Jason Brown, Jason won the lag and that was the end of him basically, after not getting out the first rack Manny cleaned the table, then Jason did not see the table again until the score was 8-0, Manny laid down a 7 pack on him. The final score of this match was 10-1. This matched Manny up against Jason for the hot seat match, Manny had to give up 2 games to 10 and the final score was 10-7 in favor of Manny.
Toe round of 7/8 saw 2 hill hill matches and in a very unlikely finish we saw some crazy stuff in the case game as Sonny B got by Derek and on the other half Gus nudged Brian R.
The round of 5/6 Ernesto oust sonny B and Jason B. sent Gus packin. This setup the final 4 and Ernesto got by Jason B. pretty handily. Now the final of the one loss side pitted Ernesto gettting a rematch with Jason P. and as before these 2 played a very close match but in the end the result was the same, Jason P came out on top to advance and get a shot at Manny in the finals.
The finals was a close one and in the end Manny squeaked out a hill hill win, giving up the 2 game spot. Congrats to both players on a great run.
The Second Chance Event on Sunday had 20 players in it. The top 4 spots got paid and those results are below, this is a handicapped event also. 1st- Victor Rojas $330, 2nd- Will Felder $245, 3rd- Chase Rudder $165 and 4th- Brent Thomas $80

Ricky “The Rocket” Hughes Wins Stop 2 On The Tiger Tour Texas
The Tiger Tour held stop #2 of the season at Slick Willies off of Dairy Ashford on Westheimer on the weekend of Feb 18/19th . The event drew 90 players, not bad after event 1 of the season drew 96, I think everyone is liking the new handicap system we put into play. So this event was played down to the final 16 players on Saturday whom would come back to fight it out for the cash on Sunday.
Winners side final 8 matches included Andy Jethwa getting by Jason Pearce 9-5, current BCA open champion Mike Alonzo knocked Cesar Arechiga west by a score of 9-7, Ricky Hughes got by Chuck Adams 8-1, and Tom Wallace won 9-3 over John McGarvey. Now in the final 4 portion Ricky Hughes won a thriller over Tom Wallace 8-7, and Mike Alonzo sent Andy Jethwa packin 9-4. This setup the hot seat match next between Machine Gun Mike and Ricky The Rocket, Mike had to give Ricky 2 games on the wire to 9 and the score ended up being 7-2 in favor of Ricky.
The round of 9/12 saw Jason Pearce end Joey Torres run 9-4, Sylver ended Cesars run 9-6, Ernesto 9-4 over Chuck, and Bobby G. 9-1 over john Mcgarvey.
The round of 7/8 had Sylver cruising past Jason P 9-1 and Ernesto squeaked by Bobby G 9-7.
The round of 5/6 had Sylver getting by Tom Wallace 9-4 and Andy handily over Ernesto 9-2. This set up the final 4 match on the one loss side with Andy facing off against Sylver, it was a great match and in the end Sylver won his 7th match in a row on the one loss side by a score of 9-7.
Now the one loss side finals had Sylver against Mike, and Mike put on a show here as he was getting a 1 game spot from Sylver and he blanked him by a score of 8-0. Wow.
The finals is now set and it is Ricky The Rocket hughes on the winners side against Machine gun Mike Alonzo, Ricky gets a 2 game spot to 9, and this match was game for game all the way to 7, which brought the end with the final score being 7-7. Congrats to Ricky Hughes.
