3 players in the strong field arrived at the Escape Pool Club in Barnsley for the 2019 Predator Cue GB 9-Ball Championships, with a chance of taking the end of season no.1 ranking position and the Predator £1,000+ Ikon 3-2 cue that came with it.
They were in order of ranking coming into the event, (1) Roy Kimberley, (2) Dan Lee and (3) Fred Dinsmore. Kimberley was top based on his win at the same event this time last year, but he knew that those 100 points would be dropping off his total at the end of the event.
If Lee made the final, irrespective of who wins the event, he would take the top spot on countback. For Kimberley to top the rankings he had to win the event, and hope Lee does not make the final, and the same applied for Dinsmore.
This event saw the final running of the triple elimination format for this season, which guarantees all players at least 3 matches for their entry fee, and also the chance to play for a guaranteed prize pot of £700.
We welcomed Koji Nagasaki who had made the 14-hour flight from Japan to attend the event, and he had a very good event, with some impressive performances.
The early stages through up some good matches. Adam Pearson beat Nagasaki 7-4, before recording a career best win over a strangely out of sorts Kimberley by the closest possible margin 7/6.
Other early action saw Dinsmore beat Darren Taylor 7-6, after Taylor had beaten Matt Lester 7-2, Tony Southern lost heavily to a resurgent Dave Beaumont (complete with new Cuesports glasses and fresh from practicing on his newly installed table at home) 7-2, after they had both had 1st round byes, and Lee beat Frankie Gillen 7-2, after Gillen enjoyed a 7-2 win over Ifakhar Hussain.
In the winner’s qualifiers for the 1st time, Pearson was whitewashed 7-0 by Beaumont, and Dinsmore took out Lee, in a closer encounter, 7-5, from 4-1 behind.
In the losers’ side later stages, Pearson qualified for his first ever semi-final and Kimberley went out with what we think is his first ever 2 straight losses 6-1 to Southern, who then went on to eliminate Lee from the event with a 6-5 win, the no.1 spot was now in Dinsmore’s own hands.
The semi-final draw for the main event took place late on the Saturday evening.
Dinsmore reached yet another final with a hard fought 7-4 win over Pearson, who was delighted with his highest ever finish, and in the other semi-final, Beaumont overcame Southern for the 2nd time in the event, this time 7-5.
It was to be a Beaumont v Dinsmore v final.
The first 2 racks were shared, as the match started out fairly even before Beaumont went on a 4-rack winning streak to storm 5-1 into the lead. Dinsmore pulled one back, and then Beaumont reached the hill at 6-2, and maybe saw the winning line as he spurned a great chance to take the match 7-2, by missing a makeable 7 ball. This was the chance that an out of sorts Dinsmore was waiting for, and he pounced and took 4 straight games to be just one behind at 5-6, which included a brilliant back double on the 8 ball at 2-6 down, and 2 combos to pot the 9 ball at 4-6 and 5-6 down respectively.
Beaumont showed his tactical awareness by taking a time out at this point to refocus. In the final rack Dinsmore had the early edge when he missed a long 4 ball, however, he had the good fortune to hook Beaumont right behind the 5 ball. Beaumont escaped from the snooker but had his own slice of luck as the cue ball hit the middle jaw and hooked Dinsmore, who escaped with a great hit. After a bout of safety, Beaumont was faced with a difficult pot, but made it and cleared the table for his maiden win, he was obviously delighted having lost in several previous finals.
Dinsmore’s loss put Lee back to the top of the rankings, and with it the beautiful £1,000 Ikon 3-2 from our fantastic sponsors Predator Cues. 2nd Place for Dinsmore earned him a £550 Predator BK3, and a £500 Predator Sneaky Pete cue was the reward for Kimberley finishing 3rd.
As well as the £250 1st prize for the event, Beaumont took home a beautiful Predator Urbain Case, as did Southern for finishing 5th.
In the 3rd loss side (Challenge event) final, Taylor beat Gillen 5-2, in a rematch of the previous event. In the semi-finals Taylor whitewashed Matt Lester 5-0, whilst Gillen scored one of the wins of his career with a 5-4 win over Kimberley, completed with a fluked bank on the 9-ball and a very vocal ‘Come on !!’ from the victor.
This enabled Taylor to pip Gillen to the top spot of the challenge rankings on countback and with it the Predator Poison Cue worth £400.
During the event all players were presented with a pack contacting (Chalks/tips/burnishers etc) worth over £150 each from our good friends at Kamui.

The uncertainty over the future of the Cue Sports Academy at Stoke Mandeville and also the Escape club in Barnsley, mean we are unable as yet to publish dates for 2020, however we are in talks to return to Riley’s Clubs and maybe hold 3 American Pool events and 2 English Pool (blackball) events next year.

BWPPA greeted 2 new players in Rick Holder and Darren Brook, as a strong field arrived at the Escape Pool Club in Bransley for the 2019 Tiger Cues Warrington GB 10-Ball Championships.
This event saw the 3rd running of the triple elimination format, which guarantees all players at least 3 matches for their entry fee, and also the chance to play for a guaranteed prize pot of £700.
The early stages through up some excellent matches. A close encounter between Frankie ‘Hot Wheels’ Gillen and Adam Pearson, which saw Gillen take a hill-hill 7-6 win, then Gillen fell in a close match 5-7 to Roy Kimberley.
Other early action saw Dan Lee beat Darren Taylor 7-6, after Taylor had beaten Ifakhar Hussain 7-3, Tony Southern beat Danny Luton 7-3, after they had both come through 7-1 against newcomers Holder and Brook respectively, and Fred Dinsmore beat Gary Swift 7-2, after Swift enjoyed a 7-1 win over the returning Matthew Lester.
Among the heavyweights in the winners qualifiers “the Sandman” Kimberley went down 7-2 v Dinsmore, and Lee overcome Southern, in a closer encounter, 7-5.
In the losers’ side later stages, Swift beat Gillen 6-1, but lost 6-5 to Southern after missing match ball at 5-3 up, Luton beat Taylor 6-4, but was then beaten 6-2 by Kimberley.
In the 5th/6th playoff, Luton beat Swift 6-5 in a reverse of the same stage in the previous event.
In the 3rd loss side (Challenge event) final, Taylor beat Gillen 5-2, in a rematch of the previous event.
The semi-final draw for the main event took place early the next morning, and we were back underway. Kimberley reached his 4th final in a row by inflicting a heavy 7-3 defeat on Lee, and in the other semi-final, it went all the way to the last rack, as Dinsmore overcame Southern 7-6.
It was to be a Dinsmore v Kimberley final.
The match started out even, and was level at 5-5, before Kimberley went 6-5 ahead, and spurned a great chance to take the match 7-5, by unluckily scratching on the penultimate ball. Dinsmore took his chance to level the match, and also won the final rack to prevail 7-6, and pointed to the heavens to say thanks to his best friend and best man John, and Mick his uncle who both recently passed away.
Reaching yet another final put Kimberley back to the top of the rankings (for now!), but his 100 points from E4 in 2018 come off at the last event of this season, so it will be a 3 way battle for top spot between Kimberley, Lee and Dinsmore at the final event of the season.
If Lee makes the final, irrespective of who wins, he takes the top spot.
For Kimberley to top the rankings he has to win the last event, and hope Lee does not make the final, and the same applies for Dinsmore.
The top of the challenge rankings is a straight fight between Gillen and Taylor.

12 players arrived at Aylesbury for the 2019 W.A.A.M.A.D (formally GNO) Players Championship. We had a few regulars missing, including chairman Tony Southern due to injury, and Press Officer Matt Lester due to another engagement.

The early stages through up some great clashes. A dramatic encounter between Craig Welsh and Frankie ‘Hot-wheels’, which saw Welsh take a 7-5 victory.
Other first round action saw Darren Taylor beat Ifakhar Hussain 7-2, Dan Luton beat Adam Pearson by the same score, and Gary Swift beat the spokesman Keith Hance 7-3.

It was to be an exciting conclusion to the 2018 BWPPA tour at the Predator Cues British 9-ball Championship. Before the first ball was struck, four players could claim the top spot by the end of the weekend.
A wintery Aylesbury was the setting for the final stop of the season as 14 players embarked on the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy. Among them local lad Will Smee made his first appearance on the tour. The big guns of the tour all enjoyed excellent performances in their opening matches. In the early stages we saw a classic, between Roy Kimberley and Danny Luton, with Luton following up his 7-2 win over Adam Pearson, with a dramatic 7-5 win over Kimberley.
Elsewhere Daniel Lee began his campaign with a 7-3 win over Tony Southern, Lee then followed that with an impressive 7-1 win over wheelchair 8-ball World Champion Dave Beaumont. Ireland’s wheelchair World 9-ball Champion began his quest for the no.1 spot with wins over Matthew Lester, Darren Taylor and Danny Luton.
In the one loss side of the draw there was some intriguing matches. Birmingham’s Adam Pearson, beat local wheelchair cuesport veteran Chris Brown 6-3, Matthew Lester was 3-0 down against Frankie Gillen. Gillen came through a 6-4 winner, taking the last two racks of the match. Meanwhile Tony Southern and Roy Kimberley progressed into the losers’ qualifier with 6-0 and 6-1 wins over the South Yorkshire duo Gary Swift and Darren Taylor respectively.
Kimberley was to face Beaumont, who despite his heavy defeat to Daniel Lee has enjoyed arguably his best run of form since joining the BWPPA tour. In the end it was Kimberley who progressed with a 6-3 win.
On the opposite side of the draw Southern was to face Danny Luton. The match went all the way down to the deciding rack, with Luton clinching a 6-5 win.
The semi-finals were filled with excitement, as the race for the no.1 spot was hotting up. Daniel Lee knew that he had to win the championship, and hope Roy Kimberley beat Dinsmore if he was to retain his position as no.1. The atmosphere was made even tenser with the matches being played on adjacent tables.
The second semi-final between Kimberley and Dinsmore was to conclude first, with “the Sandman” rolling back the years to claim a 7-5 victory. By this time the other semi-final between Lee and Danny Luton was approaching a deciding rack. It was Luton who was to pot the winning 9-ball. Meaning that Fred Dinsmore would end the season as the BWPPA no.1 despite not making the final.
The final between Kimberley and Luton showed why both players have remained at the top of wheelchair cuesports over the last three decades. Roy Kimberley was to celebrate his first main event win for a number of years, with a 7-4 win.
In the Challenge Cup sponsored by the World Pool Series, there was a three horse race for top spot. In the opening round Gary Swift’s 5-2 win over Matthew Lester (+2) and Frankie Gillen’s (+2) 5-2 win over Chris Brown (+2). Meant that only Keith Hance could deny Gillen Challenge Cup top spot in his returning season.
Following a dramatic 5-4 victory over Tony Southern, Hance (+1) set up a semi-final with Gillen to decide who would take the Poison cue and top spot. It was to be Gillen (+2) who would take it with a 5-3 win over Hance (+1).
In the final Gillen was to come up against Dave Beaumont who had defeated Gary Swift and Darren Taylor. Beaumont took his second successive Challenge Cup with a 5-3 win over Gillen (+2).

Over the weekend of 11-12 August 2018, the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy opened it’s doors to cuesport players of all disabilities for the inaugural Kamui Open Disability 9-ball Championship. It was the first event of it’s kind, hosted by the British Wheelchair Pool Players Association.
Before matches got underway, everyone who was in attendance observed a minute’s applause for Mick Langley, who sadly passed away shortly before the event took place. Langley was the gold medalist in the wheelchair snooker event at the Seoul Paralympic Games in 1988. The last time cue sports were included in the Paralympics.
In addition to the BWPPA tour players who entered the event, there was also two regulars from the WDBS snooker tour, Blake Munton and Josh Morrison who both impressed, joining them was the Irish Wheelchair (English) 8-ball player Liam Casey, as well as ambulant player Dave Lango.
Casey had a tough introduction to the larger table game. He came through a hill-hill opening match against Frankie Gillen (7-6) before facing BWPPA no.1 Daniel Lee, who had earlier beaten Lango 7-2 in his first match. Lee’s experience told as he beat Casey 7-1. Grimsby’s Munton started his weekend well, with impressive performances over BWPPA tour regulars Matthew Lester (7-3) and Chris Brown (7-3). Elsewhere in the early stages recently crowned wheelchair English 8-ball Champion Dave Beaumont returned to 9-ball with a 7-3 loss to Roy Kimberley.
Tony Southern came through a tense opener, with a 7-5 win over Danny Luton. Southern followed up with an impressive 7-0 win over Morrison.
It was a 9.30am start on the Sunday morning to decide who would progress from the double elimination stage of the main event. Southern and Luton were to meet again, but this time the Bristolian Luton won 7-5 to progress into the semi-finals. In the losers side of the draw Darren Taylor continued his impressive run of form beating Munton 7-2.
In the semis Lee and Kimberley demonstrated why they have been two of the most prolific winners on the BWPPA tour over the last 15 years, as Lee beat Luton 7-1 and Kimberley beat Taylor 7-2.
In the final it was the BWPPA no.1 Lee who took the title with a 7-2 win over “the Sandman” this rivalry will surely grow as we reach the business end of the BWPPA season, and into next.

In the Challenge Cup Casey had showed promise as he beat Brown 5-2. Elsewhere Lester beat Morrison, also 5-2. While Beaumont beat Lango 5-0, before an impressive 5-1 win over Casey in the semi-finals.
Munton continued to impress, with a 5-4 win over Lester in the semi-finals. In the final it was Beaumont’s experience that told in the end, as he beat Munton 5-1.

The BWPPA tour returned to Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley over the sunny weekend of 12-13 May, as 15 players did battle for the Simonis Grand Prix title. The tour welcomed Great Britain shooter Jonathan Bates, who was making his BWPPA debut in his hometown.
The first round threw up some thrilling matchups including two dramatic hill-hill battles. Fred Dinsmore had to use all of the experience that helped him win the wheelchair World 9-ball title last November, as he pipped Craig Welsh 7-6. Elsewhere having lead 3-0, Adam Pearson survived a hill-hill encounter with Matthew Lester to take the match 7-6. Stoke’s Dave Beaumont beat Frankie Gillen 7-4, which sent ”Hotwheels” into the one-loss bracket. Gillen was to fall victim to another hill-hill drama, this time at the hands of Darren Taylor who came through a 6-5 victor.
Daniel Lee began his campaign with a 7-3 win over Danny Luton to keep his hopes of a fifth consecutive BWPPA title alive. Dinsmore continued to progress, this time by a much more comfortable scoreline as he beat Adam Pearson 7-2.
One of the highlights from the tournament was a terrific clash between Beaumont and Roy Kimberley. Beaumont who has recently had a table installed at his home beat “the Sandman” 7-5. That defeat sent Kimberley over to the losers side of the draw where he beat “the Spokesman” Keith Hance 6-0. Earlier in the day Hance had recorded his maiden win on the BWPPA tour with a 6-4 win over Ifty Hussain.
Also in the one-loss side Jonathan Bates beat Pearson 6-3, after an earlier 7-3 defeat to Danny “Lucky” Luton. Unfortunately for the debutant this set up a clash with Kimberley who beat Bates 6-1. Bates is without doubt a prospect, many of the tours top players talked of the potential in him.
As the event moved into the qualification rounds for the semi-finals Lee beat Tony Southern 7-2 and Dinsmore beat Beaumont 7-4.
In the qualification round on the losers side of the draw, Beaumont beat Welsh 7-3 and Kimberley beat Southern by the same scoreline.
The semi-finals were jam packed with stories. The first semi-final saw Beaumont achieve arguably his biggest win on the tour to date as he defeated Lee 7-3 for a place in the main event final.
In the second semi- final Dinsmore beat Roy Kimberley 7-0.
The Final
Dinsmore took the first 2 racks. In the third Beaumont attempted a 4-9 combination, unfortunately for him the 9 stayed in the jaws of the pocket, which enabled Dinsmore to play a simple billiard to stretch his lead to three racks.
Beaumont came back to narrow his deficit to two racks at 5-3. At the beginning of the 9th rack the cueball got kicked into the corner pocket from Beaumont’s break. That was the catalyst to Dinsmore closing out the match beating Beaumont 7-3. This was the Irishman’s first title since being crowned as the wheelchair World Champion last November.

The WPS Challenge Cup saw 9 entrants. The largest field for a number of years. The event began with a preliminary match between 2 heavyweights of the Challenge Cup, which saw Gillen (+2) defeat Lester (+2) 5-3.
In the quarter-finals Darren Taylor kept his good run of form going as he beat Southern 5-1 after receiving a +2 start. Bates (+1) came through a hill-hill decider with Luton to win 5-4.
Both semi-finals saw experienced BWPPA tour players pit against newcomers to the tour. Experience came through in both matches as Welsh beat Bates 5-3, and Gary Swift edged Taylor 5-4 in a South Yorkshire derby.
It was the Sheffielder Swift who was to take the title with a 5-3 win over Newport’s Welsh.

17 players arrived at Aylesbury for the 2018 GNO Players Championship. Among them were a number of players returning from a few years away from the BWPPA tour, and Fred Dinsmore. Competing in his first tournament since being crowned the wheelchair World 9-ball Champion.
The early stages through up some great clashes. A dramatic encounter between local cue man Chris Brown and Adam Pearson, which saw Pearson clinch the decider for a 7-6 victory. Frankie Gillen returned to the tour after 3 years as a recipient of the BWPPA’s new sponsorship scheme. His campaign got off to a dream start with a 7-0 win over Lee Woodward.
Among the heavyweights “the Sandman” Roy Kimberley survived an early scare against Gloucester potter Darren Staddon, Kimberley came through 7-5. UK no.1 Daniel Lee started the season with a 7-0 win over Iffy Hussain, while Dinsmore beat South Yorkshire’s Darren Taylor 7-2.
In the winners qualification round Danny Luton beat Dinsmore 7-5. In the losers side there were a few surprises. Taylor beat Gillen 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals on his return to the BWPPA tour. In a result that sent ripples around the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy the potter from the Potteries Dave Beaumont beat Dinsmore 6-3 to knock the World Champion out of the main event.
The quarter-final draw for the main event took place early the next morning, and we were back underway. No doubt boosted by his exploits the day before Beaumont came through a hill-hill thriller against Luton for a place in the semi-finals of the main event for the first time. The South Yorkshire duo of Gary Swift and Taylor faced tough opponents in Tony Southern and Roy Kimberley respectfully. With Southern and Kimberley heading into the semis. Lee continued his dominance with a 7-1 win over Craig Welsh, to keep his hopes of a fourth straight BWPPA title alive.
It was to be Lee and Kimberley who would meet in the final, for the second successive time after both recording comprehensive wins over Beaumont and Southern respectively. As expected the match was a dramatic encounter between 2 of the greatest wheelchair pool players ever in the UK, which eventually saw Daniel Lee win 7-5 for his fourth BWPPA tour victory on the spin.

The Challenge Cup sponsored by the World Pool Series was open to all players who didn’t reach the quarter-finals of the main event. Players also receive handicaps based on their playing ability and disability. Dinsmore who had been suffering from a migraine beat Gloucester’s Staddon 5-3 to meet Gillen in the semi-finals. Staddon who hadn’t played on the BWPPA tour for many years before the GNO Players Championship really impressed, as a recipient of the new BWPPA sponsorship scheme, he could be one to watch.
Another recipient of the sponsorship scheme Keith Hance faced last years Challenge no.1 Matthew Lester. In the end it was Lester’s experience that saw him through to the final. Hance who mainly plays UK 8-ball is another player with a lot of potential. Former BWPPA Challenge no.1 Gillen lost 5-3 to Dinsmore in the other semi-final.
The Irishman went on to take the Challenge Cup with a 5-3 victory over Lester.
