Begay, Avila take top honors in open tourneys at 2016 Southwest Regionals

Brian Begay

Brian Begay of Shiprock, N.M. won the Mixed Gold Division and Joe Avila of Avondale, Ariz. finished first in the Mixed Silver Division at the 2016 Southwest Regional 8-Ball Tournament at We-Ko-Pa Resort & Conference near Scottsdale, Ariz. on Friday.

The Gold Division had 54 players, with Fargo ratings spanning from 519 to 697 and the Silver Division also had 54 players, with Fargo ratings ranging from 367 to 510. The races were handicapped with the lower-rated player receiving game spots based on the difference between the player’s Fargo ratings.

Begay’s path to the finals against Michael Allen of Salt Lake City, Utah, included wins over Tres Kane III, 6-4; Pete Barnes, 6-2; James Main, 6-2; Tim Daniel, 6-4; Ricardo Ritchie, 6-3 and Allen, 6-1.
Allen had a long string of wins before buckling to Begay. He beat Bill Truitt, 5-2; Tenadore Lee, 5-2; Wayne Cagle, 5-4; Bryan Wilson, 5-1; and Navin Talreja, 5-4, before losing to Begay. In the loser’s bracket, Allen beat LeRoy Banks, 5-1, giving him the opportunity to play Begay again in the finals.

Allen jumped out of the gate determined not to let Begay get the best of him, and beat Begay to force a second set in the true double-elimination formant.

But Begay was able to ward Allen off for the second set, beating the Salt Lake City-basEd Allen by a score of 6-3 in the finals to win the division, earning $1,000 and a plaque.

[photo id=45235|align=left]In the Silver division, Joe Avila started his day with a forfeit and then went undefeated to the finals, with wins over Lee Schnieders, 5-0; Mike Sauer, 5-4; Bryson Hunter Sr., 5-4; Anthony Laudadio, 5-4; and Todd Rodgers, 5-2, to take the hot seat.

Adam Payan, who would meet Avila in the finals, beat Guy Martinez Sr., 5-4; John Hardy, 5-0; and Willie Horton, 5-2, before falling to Todd Rodgers. Then Payan moved through the loser’s side of the bracket, with wins over Vince Villalva, 5-1 and Anthony Laudadio, 5-1, before getting revenge against Rodgers, 5-1.

But Payan couldn’t stop Avila’s winning streak and lost in the finals by a score of 5-2. Avila collected $800 for the win.

The women’s divisions, scotch doubles divisions, and the team divisions are still underway.

Chau goes undefeated to win inaugural Texas Open 10-Ball

Peru's Manny Chau added another major victory to a list that's been growing for over a decade by going undefeated to claim the inaugural Texas Open 10-Ball Tournament, held on the weekend of February 28-March 1. The $2,938-added event drew 110 entrants to Skinny Bob's Billiards in Austin, Texas and was streamed live by Ray "Big Truck" Hansen's PoolActionTV.

The field featured an expected list of both Southwest and nationwide competitors, including Chau, the Davises (James, Sr. and Jr.), Charlie Bryant, Jeremy Jones, Shane McMinn, Robb Saez, Dave Henson, and Mike Alonzo, to name just a few of the 110 entrants who cashed in the event. The winners' side semifinals featured Jones versus Alonzo and Chau versus McMinn. Jones sent Alonzo west 7-5, as Chau was busy defeating McMinn 7-4. Chau claimed the hot seat 7-5 over Jones and waited on what turned out to be the return of Alonzo.

On the loss side, David Henson, following a double hill victory over Brian Sanders and a 7-2 win over Robb Saez, faced McMinn. Alonzo drew James Davis, Sr., who'd defeated Drew McCoy and Frank Ferrer, Jr., both 7-4, to reach him. James Davis, Jr. had bowed out in the matches that decided the six-way tie for 13th ($170). Henson eliminated McMinn 7-4 and in the quarterfinals, faced Alonzo, who'd ended Davis, Sr.'s tournament bid 7-5.

Alonzo and Henson battled to double hill in the quarterfinals before Alonzo finished it and advanced to the semifinals against Jones. Alonzo completed his three-match, loss-side winning streak with a 7-5 win over Jones. Chau, though, finished Alonzo 7-3 in the finals to claim the first-ever Texas Open 10-Ball Championship title.

Tour Director John Palmore thanked John Cielo and the staff at Skinny Bob's for their hospitality, as well as sponsors James Hanshew Custom Cues, Joe Salazar, Ray Hanson and PoolActionTV, and Ron Guyer. He also noted volunteer contributions by Kaye Watson and Emma Davis, without which, he said, the event could not have been done.

Pearce Romps Thru 124 Player Field To Close The 2011 Tiger Amateur Tours Season

Forest Boyd, Ricki Casper, Drew McCoy Jason Pearce, Dalton Riley and Sonny Bosshamer

The Tiger Amateur Tour held its Season Finale Event this past weekend at Deep Pockets Billiards in Alvin,Texas. This event had $3,000 added to it, $2,500 in the main event and $500 in the Second Chance. The event kicked off Friday Night at 7, with the auction, and we also held a 16 man winner take all single elimination race to 7 mini tournament. There was a full field of 128 entered into the main event but we ended up with 124 after a few late defections that couldn’t make it out on time. So after the auction of 3 hours we kicked off the main event and played half of the first round on Friday night, and started them back up at 11 on Saturday Morning. On Saturday we played it down to the final 32 whom would come back Sunday to battle it out for all the money.

So Sunday kicked off and we had 32 players in the main event left and we had 32 show back up for the $500 added Second Chance Event. I don’t have the match scores as the bracket was left on Deep Pockets wall, but I do have the top 32 finishers names for you, they will be on the payout link on the bottom.

This event had a total payout of $22,700. The breakdown is as follows $800 in the winner take all mini tourney, $1,200 in the Second Chance Event, and $20,070 in the main event ($13,850 auction and $6,220 in the tourney).

The winner take all event was won by Forest Boyd out of Dallas, Texas. Forest defeated Dale Briones, Daniel “Lil D” McKenney , Roman Bayda, and Moses Herrera in the finals. Congrats to Forest on the win.

The Second Chance Event on Sunday saw Ricki Casper take it down, she was one of the five women entered out of the 32 players. And she represented the women well, as she had victories over Tesfa McGregor, Courtney Peters, Anthony Gepayo, Marc Whitt, then Drew McCoy in the hot seat match. Drew would go on to defeat David Parker on the loss side to get another shot at Ricki and the victory. Drew was victorious in the first set to 7, but Ricki won the second set of the true double elimination event to win the Second Chance Event and the $400 prize for first. Congrats Casper.

The main event had 124 players and paid out the top 32, full results of the event are below in the payout link. The season started off with the first 5 events being won from the player coming from the one loss side to double dip the hot seat player and this event was no different. Sonny Bosshamer whom with winning the hot seat over Jason Pearce became the season points winner would be double dipped in the end by Jason. Both players shot great and had a great run thru the field. Congrats to Sonny on becoming the season points champion, and also congrats to Jason on winning this event which was a great one.

The auction paid out 12 spots and the payouts were as follows: 1st- $4,400. 2nd-$3,000. 3rd-$2,000. 4th-$1,100. 5/6th-$685. 7/8th-$480. 9/12th-$280. Thanks to all whom participated in the auction.

The season points champ Sonny Bosshamer will receive free entries into all 12 Tiger Tour Stops in 2012. Runner-up Ernesto Bayaua will receive a Tiger Cue. And 3rd place finisher David Parker will receive a gift bag of Tiger Products and other stuff. All prizes will be handed out at the 1st event of the season at Big Tyme Billiards on Jan. 21-22, 2012.
