Diaz-Pizarro & Helvik are EC 9-Ball Champs

Ine Helvik and Francisco Diaz-Pizarro

The 2022 Dynamic Billard European Pool Championships Seniors wrapped up today in Lasko as Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (Spain) and Ine Helvik (Norway) claimed the final gold medals in the 9-ball division. In contrasting finals, Diaz-Pizarro put on a blistering display of potting, while
Helvik battled back from an early deficit to come on strong in the home straight.

Diaz-Pizarro was a beaten finalist in this same event last year and had previously claimed 9-ball gold on two occasions at the non-seniors’ men’s ECs. This week he travelled to Slovenia just to compete in the 9-ball division, a decision that was fully vindicated. In addition to the gold medal and the title, the Spaniard also bagged a spot at next year’s World 9-Ball Championship.

He said, “Last year I made second place and this year finally I won! It could be bit of a disadvantage not playing in the other tournaments but I felt it was an advantage as I came fresh. The other players played many days and maybe they got tired. There was a chance to get qualification for the World 9-Ball Championship so I tried to win so I could go.”

Sini, a previous winner of this title in 2019, got the game underway but he was blocked on the 1-ball and pushed out. He left a one-rail escape and Diaz-Pizarro gave it back to him. Sini left the 1-ball into the centre pocket and the Spaniard looked good for the runout. Despite losing position, his potting skills sealed the opener.

After a powerful break off, the 5-ball crept into the path of the 2. However, a super jump shot kept Diaz-Pizarro at the table and a top-class bank on the 3-ball kept it going. Potting at pace, it soon became 2-0.

Sini came with an illegal break and the following exchange of safeties was ended with another marvellous jump shot as Diaz potted the 1-ball, leaving a shot on the 2. His pocketing skills were hard to live with as he ran out for a three-rack lead.

Diaz sent the 1-ball into centre pocket as he looked for another runout. He seemed in total control of his game with no pot too difficult and pin-point positional play. In no time he had cleared the table to reach the halfway stage of the match.

Sini needed to find something fast but his break yielded nothing as well as being illegal. With the 1-ball blocked, Diaz-Pizarro gave the table back and Sini pushed out. Again, the table was handed back to the Italian and his jump shot on the 1-ball made contact but left it on for his opponent. With very little hesitation, Diaz increased his lead to 5-0.

Diaz made his first mistake of the match as a delicate attempt on the 2-ball clipped the 6 on route to the pocket. Sini however, missed the 2 using the rest as his match went from bad to worse. In no time, Diaz had made it 6-0 as he looked unassailable.

There was more of the same from Diaz-Pizarro as he put himself on the hill at 7-0 and was breaking for the match. The win came in a flash. The 1-ball disappeared into the centre pocket and left a simple 2/9 combination which Diaz-Pizarro dispatched for the title.

Bronze medals went to last year’s multi-medallist, Jorge Tinoco (Portugal) and Valtteri Virtanen of Finland.

Ine Helvik, by her high standards, was having a terrible week at this European Championships. Having gone two and out in both the 10-ball and 8-ball, she saved her best to last as she overcame a rocky start to claim 9-ball gold, defeating Germany’s Susanne Wessel in the final.

The German took the early lead at 2-0, before Helvik forced her way back into the match as she tied it up at 2-2. They split the next two racks between them as it became a race to three racks.

Both players had plenty of visits in a difficult fifth rack before it came down to the 7-ball. Ultimately, a gutsy bank shot from Helvik set her up to take the lead for the first time at 4-3. A good break-off from Helvik gave her a difficult attempt on the 1-ball which she missed it. Wessels also fell short with an attempt but this time left it hanging for her opponent.

They both had shots on the 2-ball before Helvik rolled it in, leaving the possibility of a clearance and she kept it together superbly to run out for a two-rack lead and put herself on the hill. There was another illegal break from Wessels but Helvik missed the 1-ball trying to force position for the 2 up-table. With everything at stake, neither player could assert themself.

It came down to the 9-ball and after several attempts by both players, Wessels deposited it to stay alive at 5-4. Helvik, breaking for the match, made a good show of it and was soon eying up a possible 2/9 combo. It wasn’t the easiest but with the title on the line, she delivered it perfectly for the gold medal.

Commented Helvik, “This is my fifth title and I’m very happy about this as it’s been a while. I last won in 2019 and then the year after I was really struggling. In 2021 we were in Treviso and that was really a tough tournament and I went away with a bronze medal, so this was a big thing.

“At the beginning of the tournament, I had two out and two out so I didn’t really play that much before the 9-ball and I got a bit lucky too, I must say. My opponents had some bad rolls and stuff so it goes both ways but they had the bad ones at the right moment for me.

“I had some good support, not just my Norwegians but I also had a lot of other people rooting for me which was so nice. During the national anthem my team were actually singing and I almost broke into tears so that was really, really nice,” she added.

Alexandra Cunha (Great Britain) and Germany’s Sigrid Glatz claimed the two bronze medals.

The 2022 Dynamic Billards European Championship Seniors and Ladies comprises nine separate events across four disciplines – 8, 9 and 10 ball as well as straight pool for men and teams.

Predator Slovenian Open – Kibaroglu Looking To Maintain Her Top Spot

Eylul Kibaroglu

The Predator Euro Tour Women is back in Lasko, Slovenia as 37 players from across Europe ready themselves to do battle in the fifth event of a six-tournament season. In total, 17 countries are represented and the lady to beat this week is No.1 ranked player Eyllul Kibaroglu of Turkey, a winner last time out in Petrich, Bulgaria where she took her maiden Predator Euro Tour title.

The Turkish star, who celebrated her 34th birthday yesterday, had a little too much for Germany’s Pia Filler in Bulgaria as she ran out a 7-4 winner in the final. That propelled her to No.1 in the standing following a run of form that saw her ascend the rankings.

Six players are within 300 ranking points of Kibaroglu, including Slovenia’s Ana Gradisnik who is just 50 points behind, so a high finish here in Lasko is essential for the Turkish girl. Gradisnik heads a contingent of three players representing the host nation, so they will all be hoping to still be competing on Monday in the closing stages.

We caught up with Ine Helvik (Norway), a veteran of the Tour, having played in its earlier incarnation as well as being a part of its latter revival.

“I’ve been playing the tour in two parts really. I played in the first one in the beginning of the 2000s and then myself and Ina Kaplan started this tour going now many years ago and I’ve been playing almost every tournament.

“I still enjoy it and I always want to win my matches and to perform as best as I can. I would like to win but some of these girls do nothing but play pool and I have a day-time job and stuff so it’s not that easy but I always go into a match with the aim to win it.

“Looking at the players here, Eyllul Kibaroglu has become very stable. She’s always been good and a very good shot-maker but the last year or two she’s been more stable and she performs on that level almost all the time.

“No.2 Ana Gradisnik likes playing at home as she has her family here and has all the support of the locals who are very good at coming out and supporting her. Of course, there’s always pressure playing on home ground but she enjoys it. The pandemic did Pia Filler very well as she could focus only on playing pool and practice and that shows. Put the hours in and you get the reward.

“Of the younger players, we have my Norwegian team mate Nina Torvund. She’s going to be really good in a couple of years. She’s now getting all the tournaments in and practicing and she’s definitely a future top European player. Also, Bojana Sarac and Hanna Memic are both playing really well. There’s definitely a future here!” she added.

The ranking is calculated on a rolling six event series with each player dropping the event which yielded them the least points. Once an event is concluded, the first event from the six is dropped to be replaced by points from the current tournament.

Play gets underway at 9.00am local time tomorrow. All Predator Euro Tour Women tournaments are 9-ball and the field contest a double-elimination format, playing down to the last 16 competitors, and then single elimination until the finish. All matches are a race to 7 racks with alternate break.

Her second match was definitely more of a challenge. She faced Ine Helvik (NOR) and managed to overpower the Norwegian with 7:5 needing a lot more performance and action than in her first round match. Jasmin Ouschan had two walks in the park today. She took down fellow countrywoman Lena Primus (AUT) 7:2 and the Diana Stateczny (GER) 7:1 to book her seat in the round of the last 16 players single elimination.

Helvik and Sini Take the Final Gold Medals In 9-Ball Individuals

Ricardo Sini and Ine Helvik

The titles at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019 9-ball have been awarded today. Ine Helvik (NOR) and Ricardo Sini (ITA) have snatched the last two remaining titles.

The final in the seniors 9-ball division was played between Ricardo Sini and Sami Karttunen (FIN). Sini had a furious start and ran away with a 4:1 score after 5 racks played. But then he started committing several unforced errors which brought Karttunen back into the match. After 9 racks played, the Finish was even leading 5:4 over Sini. Throughout the whole match, Sini had the better break shot but his easy mistakes almost cost him the match. He recovered after rack 9 and got back to his earlier shape, winning the match with 8:5 over Karttunen. This was mainly since Sini got the breaks right and Karttunen had some unfortunate scratches in the latter stage of the match.

Wessel tried to recover but Helvik played too strong and too consistent for her today. 6:3 was the final result which brought the title to Helvik in the ladies final match.

Mutto over Peeters in Euro Seniors 9-Ball

Mahmut Mutto

Mahmut Mutto (SWE) ousted Rene Peeters (NED) in the round of 16 players of the seniors 9-ball at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019.

The match was a heartbreaker. Neither player was able to take control of the match and found themsevles tied at 7-7. Peeters had the break shot but he came up dry. A safety battle evolved with Peeters playing a good shot at the 1-ball. However, he mistakenly pocketed the 1-ball and had to play a safety on the 2-ball. Mutto hit it and left a tough shot for Peeters who tried to pocket it. He failed and Mutto took his chance to run the table, winning the match 8-7 over Peeters, booking his seat in the quarterfinal tomorrow.

Earlier today in the round of the last 32 players single elimination, Sascha Specchia (SUI) met Jesse Thehu (NED). That was a rematch from the straight pool finals last week, which was just won by Thehu. Specchia had a score to settle from that match, and in the beginning of the match it looked like he was on his way to do exactly that. He took the first 3 consecutive racks and came to a 3-0 lead without much effort. Rack four then went to Thehu. But Specchia dominated the match while things did not fall into place for Thehu. After 8 racks played, Specchia was on the hill with a nice 7-1 lead over Thehu. With one more rack going to Thehu’s account, Specchia ended the road for his Dutch opponent in the next rack and won the match with a clear 8-2 result. He advanced to the round of 16 players where he met David Larsson (SWE). In that match, Specchia had definitely more work to do but in the end came up with a nice 8-6 win which took him to the quarterfinals of the 9-ball individuals.

In the ladies division, Ine Helvik (NOR) and Susanne Wessel (GER) are through to the semi-finals. Helvik defeated Ann-Sofie Lofgren (SWE) 6-4 while Wessel overpowered Karin Michl (GER) 6-1. The other two seats for the semi-finals will be decided in the matches between Tuuliina Panula (FIN) v Karin Michl and Nicole Kaldewey (GER) v Ann-Sofie Lofgren. These matches will be played tomorrow morning at 11:00 CET.

Euro 10-Ball Titles Captured by Correia and Wessel

Susanne Wessel and Henrique Correia

The titles in the 10-ball competition of the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019 have been awarded. Susanne Wessel (GER) won the ladies event while Henrique Correia (POR) took the crown in the seniors event.

The final match in the seniors division between Henrique Correia and Timo Hofmann (GER) was determined by several uncharacteristic mistakes. Correia came out strong and went up 2-0, but then was plagued by multiple errors that Hofmann benefitted from. The German took the lead at 3-2 before he too, saw errors get the best of him. With three major mistakes in three consecutive racks, Hofmann gave the match away. allowing Correia to take racks which he should have won himself. Instead of being 6-3 in front, Hofmann found himself trailing 3-6 before he won another rack to get to 4-6. Then, in the 11th rack, both players disregarded an 8-ball in a precarious position. Correia missed the 7-ball, leaving it for Hofmann, but it was Hofmann who quickly discovered that the 8-ball could not be sunk in the side pocket. Hofmann missed a difficult shot and left 3 easy shots remain for Correia who used this chance to win his 11th title on a European Championship level.

In the final of the ladies division, Susanne Wessel met Nathalie Rohmer (FRA). Wessel was favoured and it looked like she was living up to that expectation when she took a quick 4-0 lead over Rohmer. The nerves of being one game away from the title then seemed to get to her, as she missed important shots. In rack six, she missed an easy 10-ball which left the fans wondering if she would lose the match to her nerves. Finally, in rack seven, Wessel sealed the deal and cleared the table, winning the final match 5-2 over Rohmer for her 8th Gold Medal on European level.

Hofmann Through To Quarterfinals In Senior’s 10-Ball

Timo Hofmann (GER)

Timo Hofmann (GER) has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 10-ball individuals with a 7-3 victory over Espen Andersen (NOR)

Today, in the final round 16 players senior’s 10-ball competition of the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019, Espen Andersen encountered Timo Hofmann. Both players came into the match undefeated and had both displayed strong play in the event so far. Neither player will want this match on their highlight reel, as the pressure got to both players early in the match. Both players were guilty of mental errors and the match was deadlocked at 3-3 after six racks. Hofmann managed to get himself together first and that was the deciding factor as he found his stroke and consequently took rack after rack from Andersen who seemed a bit helpless at times. The Norwegian was not able to win another rack which meant that Hofmann sailed through to a nice 7-3 victory over Andersen. This victory booked the German a seat in the quarter-final of the 10-ball seniors which will be played tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET. His opponent will be Sascha Specchia (SUI), the runner-up in the straight pool competition.

In the ladies’ 10-ball competition, the two German players Karin Michl and Susanne Wessel made their way through the winner’s qualification round. Michl took down Ine Helvik (NOR) 5:1 while Wessel defeated Nathalie Rohmer (FRA) 5:2.

Later in the day, the team competition got started. One close match in the winner’s qualification round of the seniors was the encounter between France and Portugal. Sergio Silva took the first point for Portugal with a 7-1 victory over Betrand Deloriol in 8-ball. Then, both of the other matches went hill-hill at the same time. It was Henrique Correia who snatched the second and game-winning point for the Portuguese by winning his 10-ball match 7-6 over Michel Natali.

The Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies 2019 will commence tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET with matches in the 10-ball individuals competition. The 10-ball finals will be played at 13:00 CET.

Ouschan Completes Austrian Double Victory For The Weekend

Jasmin Ouschan

Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) has won the Predator Veldhoven Open 2019, the third tournament of the women’s Euro-Tour series, with a 7-4 victory over Melanie Suessenguth (GER).

What really made the difference between Ouschan and the other 59 contestants in this event, her second straight tour stop win, was her break shot and her playing intelligence. Though Ouschan is known as a strong shotmaker, she also knows when to go for a safety in order to achieve an even better situation. Her break shot is also much more consistent than the break shot of her opponents. On her way to the final match, Ouschan defeated Kristina Jaeger (GER) 7-3, Ewa Bak (POL) 7-2, Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) 7-1, Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) 7-1 and in the semi-final, Tina Vogelmann (GER) 7-3. Those results clearly show her superiority over the rest of the field in this tournament. Suessenguth made her way to the final match with victories over Diana Khodjaeva (BEL) 7-2, Kristina Tkach (RUS) 7-6, Ine Helvik (NOR) 7-3, Christine Steinlage (GER) 7-4, Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) 7-4 and in her semi-final, Veronika Hubrtova (CZE) 7-5. While most fans expected a clear victory for Ouschan in the final match, Suessenguth was a tough opponent and demanded everything from Ouschan. Tied at 4-4 after eight racks, Ouschan shifted into overdrive and took the match and the title, winning 7-4 over Suessenguth.

Fedor Gorst goes all the way

Fedor Gorst

Fedor Gorst (RUS) has just won the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018 with a thrilling 9:7 victory over Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) in the final match.

It was Gorst’s first appearance in a final match of a Euro-Tour ever today. He made his way over elite players like Petri Makkonen (FIN), Mieszko Fortunski (POL), Ivo Aarts (NED) and Maximilian Lechner (AUT) into the final match. His opponent Mateusz Sniegocki had just played a really tough semi-final against his teammate Tomasz Kaplan (POL) and just sneaked over the finish-line with 9:8. So the clash in the final match was experience versus youth. Sniegocki has already three Euro-Tour titles under his belt and today was his fifth appearance in a final match. Gorst was the newbie. „I had nothing to lose really,“ stated Gorst after the match. „The odds were all in favour of Sniegocki so I could play my game and enjoy the final match“. It seemed as if Gorst was as calm as one could be. „I was nervous“, admitted Gorst, „but I managed to keep my focus on the match and not think about winning my first Euro-Tour title.“ The match was really tight with both players changing in leading the scoreboard. At 7:7, SNiegocki missed an important shot. That brought Gorst to the table who showed no mercy to the experienced Polish and ran two racks, winning the final match with 9:7. „Tomorrow I will probably be happy about my 2nd place today,“ mentioned Sniegocki after the final when asked. „But today I’m suffering because I had my chances to win the match“.

Earlier today, the women started their tournament as well. The EPBF Treviso Open began with a big upset. Current #1 ranked player Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) lost her opening match against Monika Zabek (POL) with 5:7. Zabek was already up 3:1 and 5:3 when Fefilava took her time-out. When she came back, she played better and more focussed and managed to put some pressure on her Polish opponent. But Zabek kept her nerves together and put the match into her account when it was on the razor’s edge at 6:5. After that match, Zabek lost a heartbreaker with 6:7 to Ine Helvik (NOR). She then went to the loser’s side to play Elise Qiu (NED). In that match Zabek played up to her limits. After 12 racks, the score was 6:6. It was Qiu’s break shot coming up. The match was open but Qiu was not able to close the book. She missed the 8-ball and left a long shot for Zabek. The Polish pocketed both 8-ball and 9-ball and proceeded to the single elimination stage. Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) wasted no time with her first opponent, Annika Nilsson (SWE). 7:2 was the clear result in favour of Ouschan at the end of the match. Then she went on and handed the same defeat to her next opponent, Ewa Bak (POL). That victory put Ouschan through to the single elimination stage. She is joined there by current #2 of the Euro-Tour rankings, Kristina Tkach (RUS). In former times, Tkach had less problems to go into the single elimination stage. Today, she found two worthy opponents in Tamara Peeters (NED) and Vania Franco (POR). Tkach was still a bit better than these two and won both matches 7:4 and 7:5 to go to the single elimination stage.

Friday through Sunday, EPBF will show two feature matches LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page. The complete tournament is shown on kozoom.com for premium pass holders.
