Treviso Open – Lechner, He And Ouschan All In The Last 16
Hard Times for Favorites
Today, many favorite players had a tougher job in front of them than expected at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands. Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) for example, long time Euro-Tour powerhouse and currently ranked number 28 in Europe, was ousted by unheralded Marco Spitzky (GER) with 7:9 in loser’s round two.
After yesterday and this afternoon, when Daryl Peach and Nick Van Den Berg went down to their opponents, the run for the dark horses continued here. Stepanov was the next victim of such a constellation. He fell to the sharp blade of Spitzky who made it to the next round on the loser’s side. Stepanov was able to get the better start in the match. The first three racks belonged to him. But then Spitzky seemed to wake up and also started potting balls. When Spitzky even overtook Stepanov, the Russian went for his time-out. But that did not help him. Spitzky always kept his nose in front of Stepanov and reached the finish line first, winning the match 9:7.
Marcus Chamat, „The Napoleon“ from Sweden just escaped that fate in the tournament. After having received a cruel bashing by Max Lechner (AUT) with 2:9 yesterday, Chamat needed to get some wins on the loser’s side. His first opponent was Michal Turkowski (POL) who was not much of an obstacle for Chamat. 9:6 was the final result in favor of the experienced Swede. Then he encountered young Kestutis Zadeikis from Lithuania. The young man showed absolutely no nerves and got Chamat in the back seat from the very beginning of the match. 5:1 and 6:2 were the intermediate results in favor of Zadeikis. But then Chamat fought his way back into the match. After several mistakes from the young Lithuanian, the scoreboard showed 8:8 with Chamat having the break in rack 17. What a drama unfolded! Chamat just had a possible layout and one ball down on his break shot. He deployed all his skill and energy in the rack and ran it, winning the match with the closest of all results 9:8. That just kept Chamat alive in the event, having survived loser’s round two only.
Other remarkable results from today’s loser’s rounds include multiple European and former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER) losing his second match against Ivo Aarts (NED) 7:9. That also ends Ortmann’s quest for glory here in Leende this year. Daryl Peach (GBR) made a statement and wiped the floor with Gino de Ruyter (BEL), sending him home 9:0.
Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open will continue at 09:00 CET with matches from the loser’s round 3.

Dudanets Wins Over Dalmatin Despite Several Hiccups
Karlo Dalmatin (CRO) lost to Maksim Dudanets (RUS) with 8:9 in a heartbreaker at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open Euro-Tour in Leende, The Netherlands.
The first round match started out as expected. Dudanets had a grip on the match and took a quick and comfortable 6:1 lead over Dalmatin. It looked like the Croatian would receive a tough bashing by the Russian kid. But then Dalmatin somehow recovered and started playing more focussed while Dudanets committed some negligent mistakes. „These pockets do not allow mistakes“, stated Dudanets right after the match. And he definitely knew what he was talking about. His easy going allowed Dalmatin to get a foot back in the door. Better performance together with a bit of luck turned the match which started out as a one-sided show into a thriller. Trailing 4:7, Dalmatin found himself on the table without any position. Dudanets had played a safety shot and Dalmatin needed to hit the 4-ball over one rail. In fact, he did not only hit the correct ball but also pocketed the 9-ball unwanted in the side pocket in order to turn the scoreboard to 5:7. That obviously caught Dudanets a bit off-track. The Russian struggled and started to commit easy mistakes himself. Leading 7:5, he missed an easy 6-ball and Dalmatin accepted the gift, coming closer with 6:7. Rack number 14 was a break and run by Dalmatin. The tension got high in the match. Dudanets answered that action with a break and run himself to get on the hill, leading 8:7. In rack 16 again, Dudanets had the chance to finish the match but he once again missed a makable shot. He played a poor position on the 4-ball and consequently missed it. Dalmatin got his nerves together and all of a sudden the match was a hill-hill affair at 8:8 with Dudanets’ break to come up. The drama seemed to be complete for the young Russian when the cue ball scratched after his break shot. All balls were spread wide open on the table with Dalmatin having ball in hand. But whatever the Croatian was thinking, he took a huge risk and tried to cheat the pocket on the 3-ball in order to get a better position on the 4-ball. The 3-ball did not fall in the pocket and Dudanets got back to the slate. „I know I lost focus in the middle of the match“, said Dudanets, „and the game started punishing me. Rightfully so! However, in the end I was a bit lucky and still managed to win the match somehow“. That was very true and displayed in the final rack. Dudanets once again missed the 6-ball and Dalmatin could not benefit from it. He also missed the 6-ball and Dudanets finished him with 9:8 in the end. Dudanets was victorious over Dalmatin but the match was by far not as clear as it would have been expected beforehand.
Other remarkable results from today’ first round matches include former junior World 9-Ball Champion Christian Goetemann (GER) winning 9:6 over local player Tim Jonkman (NED). A bit of a surprise was the 9:8 victory of Nicolas van Parys (BEL) over Michal Turkowski (POL).

Gray Notched a Victory Over Filler
Euro-Tour’s ranked #1 player Mark Gray (GBR) just notched a 9:5 victory over up and rising Joshua Filler (GER) in the winner’s qualification round of the Dynamic Billard Albanian Open in the Expo Center in Tirana, Albania.
Mark Gray is always a hot favorite for the title in any Euro-Tour event. Currently leading the rankings, the Brit still was favored in this match with Filler who is regarded as „the“ rising star in European Billiards by many. The signs for the match were on the wall: This was going to be a tough battle for both of the two players. Indeed, Filler was a great challenge for Gray over a long period in the match. After ten racks, the score was 5:5. This proved that none of the two really got any momentum until then. Filler was at the table having won the safety scenario in that rack and had a clear layout in front of him. He incomprehensibly missed an easy 3-ball and gave the potential lead away to Gray who thanked him and went ahead with 6:5. The next break was Filler’s. He had balls down but no shot at the 2-ball. So again, a safety exchange opened the rack. Gray played the better shots and took w two-point lead with 7:5. Then Filler took a time-out since he needed to get going now otherwise Gray would be too far ahead of him. Rack 13 saw again Gray as the better safety player and he managed to win that rack too, climbing on the hill 8:5. Now it was Filler’s break and his last chance to somehow turn the tide in the match. Filler had a good break and a nice layout in front of him. However, he again missed an easy shot on the 4-ball and gave the rack away to Gray who took the rack and the match 9:5 over Filler. In this match, Filler committed too many mistakes and Gray was the deserved winner in the end.
Other remarkable results from today include Ronald Regli (SUI) eliminating Mario He (AUT) from the tournament in loser’s round 3 with 9:8. Mario He, being the winner of the last event in North Cyprus, met Regli who was the runner-up from Austria, the event before. Two high-class players that one would not have expected in the early loser’s rounds. But they both already lost once so they had to joust on the left side of the flowchart. At 8:8, He played a poor safety shot which allowed Regli to run out and stay alive in the tournament. In the next round he will face Mark Mägi (EST) who also managed to win his last match with 9:8 over Michal Turkowski (POL).
Earlier today, Karlo Dalmatin (CRO) ended the hopes of Daniel Tangudd (SWE), overrunning him with 9:6. Alen Muratovic (BIH) sneaked past Dimitri Jungo (SUI) with a 9:8 triumph over the Suisse. Ermal Dylie (ALB) also kept a foot in the door, winning his match with Rui-Edgar Franco (POR) 9:8. Dylie’s teammate Arjan Matrizi (ALB) also stayed alive in the event defeating French legend Stephan Cohen (FRA) 9:7. Jim Chawki (SWE) send Nick Malai (GRE) home by sweeping him 9:7.
In the Albanian Women Open, Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) pipped her teammate Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) 7:6 in the first round. She will play Sandra Baumgartner (AUT) in winner’s round 1 at 15:30 CET today. Baumgartner remained the upper hand over Yini Gaspar (SUI) 7:4 in her first match. Diana Khodjaeva (BEL) shelled Palina Chernik (BLR) 7:1 in round 1 and will now encounter Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR) in the next round.

Babica Trounced Drago at Dynamic Billard Open
Radoslaw Babica from Poland ousted "The Tornado" Tony Drago (MLT) from the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open Euro-Tour event with a narrow 9:8 victory.
One great and thrilling match happened today in the loser’s qualification round when Radoslaw Babica (POL) faced Tony Drago (MLT). The match went along very leveled and after 10 racks, the scoreboard displayed a tie at 5:5. Then, Babica went on the hill first and got an 8:6 advantage over Drago. But the "Tornado" struck back, winning two straight racks in order to make the match 8:8. Then, Drago was at the table with all balls in the open for him. However, he missed an easy 5-ball and allowed Babica back into the table. The Polish could not run-out but he turned the final rack into a safety exchange. Drago tried a risky bank shot when he had the option of either playing a safety or going for a bank. He missed it and allowed Babica to run the rack and win the match with 9:8.
Another interesting match was the clash between Michal Turkowski (POL) and Marcus Chamat (SWE). After five racks, Turkowski was leading 4:1 over Chamat. But the Swede did not even think about giving up. He fought back and got into the match, turning the scoreboard to 8:7 after 15 racks. Then Turkowski played up to his best and made the match another hill-hill thriller. In the final and decisive 17th rack, a safety battle occurred. Both players tried not to leave a shot for the opponent. Then Chamat left a shot for Turkowski which the Polish had to jump. He flunked the ball in over three rails but it could not be considered to be a lucky shot since he hooked himself again on the next ball. While he attempted to hit that object ball, Turkowski committed a foul shot and gave ball in hand to Chamat who capitalized from it and ran the rack to win the match by a hair’s breadth with 9:8. In the next round, the loser’s qualification round, Chamat fell to Ivica Putnik (CRO) with 5:9.

The Incredible Journey of Karl Boyes
Great Britain’s Karl Boyes has been on a tough mission in this Dynamic Billard Slovenian Open so far. Yesterday, he defeated Ralf Souquet (GER) with 9:3. Then, he won over Adam Mscisz (POL) 9:1, probably the only „easy“ match so far. Today, he fell to the sharp blade of „The Terminator“ Niels Feijen (NED) 3:9 in the winner’s qualification round. He went on the loser’s side just to mert Ralf Souquet again. There, he was having a comfortable lead when Souquet started pulling back rack after rack from him. He broke at 8:7 in his favor and the 9-ball went in the pocket. That brought „The Grinder“ to the round of the last 32 players. There, Boyes met another heavyweight in David Alcaide (ESP). He remained the upper hand in that match and will not meet last Euro-Tour’s winner Denis Grabe (EST) in the round of the last 16 players which will be played tomorrow morning at10:00 CET. Grabe had ousted Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) 9:7 earlier.
It is also remarkable that Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) is among the best 16 players of the event. She lost to her brother yesterday but came back strong. While Albin made his way over the winner’s side with victories over Richard Jones (GBR) 9:4 and in the single elimination Joshua Filler (AUT) 9:5, Jasmin had a bit more work to do. She got the better of Konrad Juszczyszyn (POL) 9:4, Michael Schneider (SUI) 9:1 and Roman Hybler (CZE) 9:5 to earn a spot among the best 32 players of the event. She met Michal Turkowski (POL) and added him to the list of her victims with 9:4 to enter the round of the last 16 players, just like her brother Albin. There she will face Mark Gray (GBR) who won 9:5 over his fellow countryman Daryl Peach (GBR).
Mats Schjetne (NOR) delivered a huge upset to the tournament. He ousted „The Terminator“ Niels Feijen (NED) in the round of the final 3 players with 9:7. That victory was completely unheralded. Schjetne was drawn in the match with Feijen. He came from the loser’s side.
