Kazakis wins Klagenfurt Open and Makes Mosconi Cup Team 2019

Alex Kazakis

Alexander Kazakis (GRE) just won the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2019 with an impressive 9:8 victory over Marc Bijsterbosch (NED).

Bijsterbosch had already two 9:8 victories to survive today to make it to the final match so he was actually on a marathon. His opponent Kazakis had wind underneath his wings since making the final match meant his nomination to this year’s Mosconi Cup Team. The final match was packed with drama and excitement and was as thrilling as it could have been.

Kazakis opened the final match with a powerful break. He had 3 balls down and a perfect layout. Being in the top form that he has shown throughout the tournament, especially having the Mosconi Cup Team nomination in his pocket by making this final, Kazakis started and seemed to be unstoppable. He cleared the table quickly and got to a 1:0 lead over his Dutch opponent. Bijsterbosch however did not seem to be too impressed and returned the table to Kazakis after having run a rack himself, tying the match at 1:1. Rack three displayed again 3 balls down for Kazakis. He really had a perfect break in the early stage of the final match. Another clearance followed for a 2:1 lead for Kazakis. In rack four, Bijsterbosch had 2 balls down but a very long shot on the 2-ball and came up with a safety attempt. He left a tough shot for Kazakis who had to execute a jump shot. The outcome was lucky for the Greek since he left no clear shot for Bijsterbosch. However, Bijsterbosch fired a one bank shot in and ran the rack to get to 2:2 including a fluke shot on the 8-ball. The quality of the final match was unbelievably high. The first mistake happened in rack #5 when Kazakis lost the cue ball on the break shot and scratched. That brought Bijsterbosch to the table with ball in hand. He cleared the rack and got to a 3:2 lead with his own break shot coming up next. At that stage, the odds were in favour of Bijsterbosch winning the match. But Kazakis hung in there and managed to get back to a one-rack-lead himself at 5:4. Rack #10 was fiercely fought over. Kazakis stood tall and for the first time in the match got to a 2-rack lead at 6:4. He has won 4 consecutive racks which left an impression on Bijsterbosch. Race #11 saw again Kazakis performing a break shot. But this time he only had 1 ball down and 1 ball crossing the head string which meant the break shot was illegal. It brought Bijsterbosch to the table who consequently ran the table and added another point to his score. The next rack was a break and run for Bijsterbosch which tied the match once more at 6:6. Once more, the tide turned in the match and Bijsterbosch also won rack #13 to get to 7:6 over Kazakis. The match heated up with both players wanting the victory very much. Bijsterbosch’s break shot in the next rack was not ideal. He had a ball down but no shot on the lowest numbered ball. He somehow managed to solve the situation and again ran the whole rack, getting on the hill with 8:6. The pressure was on Kazakis whose break shot was up in the next rack. He played well until the 6-ball where he fell out of position. Kazakis attempted a jump shot but he did not pocket the 6-ball. A safety duel followed with Kazakis coming out as the winner. The Greek once more used his chance and got to 7:8. Rack #16 was again determined by safety play in the beginning. None of the two wanted to commit any mistake and they both played rather defensive. Kazakis replied a push out from Bijsterbosch with a good safety and gained control in the rack. This gave him the upper hand and he won the rack to tie the match at 8:8. At hill-hill, everything is possible. Kazakis had the deciding break shot and he had a great break in rack 17. Two balls were down and he had a good layout in front of him. He fell out of position for the 3-ball but came up with a great safety. Bijsterbosch had no answer for it and Kazakis capitalised, making the balls and winning the match and the tournament with 9:8. „A miracle happened today“ said Kazakis after the award ceremony, „I was trying really hard to get in the Mosconi Team the whole year. It could not have gone any better for me, winning also this tournament to make the team“.

Bad night for Austrian Team at Klagenfurt Open

Clockwise: Kazakis, Kaci, Filler and Dudanets

In the round of the last 32 players single elimination of the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2019, all remaining three Austrian players have been eliminated,

Albin Ouschan (AUT) was up against young Wiktor Zielinski (POL). The Polish youth player has demonstrated last year when he won the Euro-Tour in Treviso, Italy, how strong he can perform. That also happened tonight. he succeeded in playing his A-game, using his chances and keeping Ouschan always at a distance. After 2:2, Zielinski dominated the match and did not allow Ouschan to get back into it. He made no mistakes while the Austrian struggled and could not find a recipe to break Zielinski’s run. 9:6 was the clear result in favour of Zielinski which leaves a 17th rank finish for Ouschan.

Ouschan’s teammates Mario He and Max Lechner had even worse experiences in the same round. Both of them lost with 1:9. Mario He fell against Eklent Kaci (ALB) while Lechner was overpowered by Ruslan Chinakhov. Having three top class players in the round of the last 32 players with all of them losing more or less clearly is definitely not the result that the Austrian organiser would have wished to see at the end of this day.

Loser’s Round 2

The day started with most matches displaying „business as usual“. Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) seemed to be back on track and eliminated Adam Stankiewicz (POL) 9:4. Wiktor Zielinski (POL) handed a doughnut to Marco Schmitt (GER) winning his match 9:0. The first small upset was provided by Pierfrancesco Garzia (ITA) when he ousted teammate Fabio Petroni (ITA) surprisingly with 9:5. Another interesting result was Marcus Chamat (SWE), the captain of the European Mosconi Cup Team, winning with 9:5 over Imran Majid (GBR). The next round however brought a huge surprise. Ralf Souquet (GER), multiple World, European and Euro-Tour Champion, was kicked out by Michael Huetter (AUT), local player from Austria. That exit came completely unexpected for Souquet and does also not help him to advance in the rankings. While Souquet was out, other high profile players on the loser’s side such as Tomasz Kaplan (POL), Thorsten Hohmann (GER) and Darren Appleton (GBR) continued their quest through the loser’s rounds.

Loser’s Round 3

The next capital casualties were recorded in loser’s round 3. Thorsten Hohmann fell to the sharp blade of Alex Montpellier (FRA) with 7:9. The same round saw Pijus Labutis (LTU) fall to Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) with 0:9. Francesco Candela (ITA), dark horse from Italy ended Darren Appleton’s journey here at the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2019 with an impressive 9:7 victory over the former World Games Gold Medallist.

Loser’s Round 4

This round saw the end of Europe’s Mosconi Cup captain Marcus „Napoleon“ Chamat (SWE) who was defeated by Konstantinos Koukiadakis (GRE) with 9:8. Karol Skowerski (POL) took down „The Terminator“ Niels Feijen (NED) with 9:6 in the same round.

Fedor Gorst goes all the way

Fedor Gorst

Fedor Gorst (RUS) has just won the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018 with a thrilling 9:7 victory over Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) in the final match.

It was Gorst’s first appearance in a final match of a Euro-Tour ever today. He made his way over elite players like Petri Makkonen (FIN), Mieszko Fortunski (POL), Ivo Aarts (NED) and Maximilian Lechner (AUT) into the final match. His opponent Mateusz Sniegocki had just played a really tough semi-final against his teammate Tomasz Kaplan (POL) and just sneaked over the finish-line with 9:8. So the clash in the final match was experience versus youth. Sniegocki has already three Euro-Tour titles under his belt and today was his fifth appearance in a final match. Gorst was the newbie. „I had nothing to lose really,“ stated Gorst after the match. „The odds were all in favour of Sniegocki so I could play my game and enjoy the final match“. It seemed as if Gorst was as calm as one could be. „I was nervous“, admitted Gorst, „but I managed to keep my focus on the match and not think about winning my first Euro-Tour title.“ The match was really tight with both players changing in leading the scoreboard. At 7:7, SNiegocki missed an important shot. That brought Gorst to the table who showed no mercy to the experienced Polish and ran two racks, winning the final match with 9:7. „Tomorrow I will probably be happy about my 2nd place today,“ mentioned Sniegocki after the final when asked. „But today I’m suffering because I had my chances to win the match“.

The new Euro-Tour rankings are pretty much dominated by Austrian players. Mario He (#2), Albin Ouschan (#3) and Maximilian Lechner (#8) have all conquered or defended a top ten position. Leader of the rankings is still Eklent Kaci (ALB).

Earlier today, the women started their tournament as well. The EPBF Treviso Open began with a big upset. Current #1 ranked player Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) lost her opening match against Monika Zabek (POL) with 5:7. Zabek was already up 3:1 and 5:3 when Fefilava took her time-out. When she came back, she played better and more focussed and managed to put some pressure on her Polish opponent. But Zabek kept her nerves together and put the match into her account when it was on the razor’s edge at 6:5. After that match, Zabek lost a heartbreaker with 6:7 to Ine Helvik (NOR). She then went to the loser’s side to play Elise Qiu (NED). In that match Zabek played up to her limits. After 12 racks, the score was 6:6. It was Qiu’s break shot coming up. The match was open but Qiu was not able to close the book. She missed the 8-ball and left a long shot for Zabek. The Polish pocketed both 8-ball and 9-ball and proceeded to the single elimination stage. Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) wasted no time with her first opponent, Annika Nilsson (SWE). 7:2 was the clear result in favour of Ouschan at the end of the match. Then she went on and handed the same defeat to her next opponent, Ewa Bak (POL). That victory put Ouschan through to the single elimination stage. She is joined there by current #2 of the Euro-Tour rankings, Kristina Tkach (RUS). In former times, Tkach had less problems to go into the single elimination stage. Today, she found two worthy opponents in Tamara Peeters (NED) and Vania Franco (POR). Tkach was still a bit better than these two and won both matches 7:4 and 7:5 to go to the single elimination stage.

Friday through Sunday, EPBF will show two feature matches LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page. The complete tournament is shown on kozoom.com for premium pass holders.

That concludes the coverage of the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2018. Tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET, the EPBF Treviso Open, will continue with matches of the last 16 players single elimination.

Major setback for Ouschan in Klagenfurt

Miguel Silva, Albin Ouschan and Raoul Reichegger

Current Euro-Tour ranked #3 and former World Champion Albin Ouschan (AUT) got eliminated from the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2018 after two straight matches. That huge upset was performed by Miguel Silva (POR) and unheralded Raoul Reichegger (AUT).

Pressure took its toll on Austria’s Albin Ouschan. High hopes were dashed as quickly as they were imagined as Albin Ouschan went out on the first day’s play. Born in this beautiful town close to the Slovenian border, fans and the locals held their head with disbelief as he crashed out of the tournament after only two matches. First losing to Portugal’s Miguel Silva 7:9, then to his unknown Austrian counterpart, Raoul Reichegger with the same score line which means the Austrian hopes now lie in the hands of others.

Austria’s Mario He, #2 on the overall rankings also made the home fans sweat as he lost a match that seemed impossible to lose. Leading 5:0 and on the hill leading 8:5, it was all smiles but suddenly, the wheels came off as another relatively unknown Italian, Filippo Cataldi showed Mario how to kill a game off winning 9:8 and sending Mario to the loser’s side where he will play Friday morning 09:00 local time.

Eklent Kaci, the hottest property in pool right now and Europe’s current #1 ranked player made light work of Christoffer Lentz (DEN) 9:2 but faced a tricky situation against Italy’s Daniele Corrieri. Kaci was well behind several times in the match and never actually led at any stage until it came to the final rack. After dragging himself back to 8:8 it was a tense last rack with Kaci showing the metal that has served him so well of late allowing him the calmness to take this match 9:8. That result has set up a mouth-watering tie against another hotshot, Germany’s Joshua Filler starting at 14:00 local time Friday for a place in the last 32 single elimination stage of the event.

Niels Feijen (NED, the Dutch all-round weapon on the battlefield of slate, also had to suffer a defeat today. After taking down current European 8-ball Champion Bahram Lotfy (DEN) 9:6 earlier, he met England’s Imran Majid in winner’s round 2. That match was a thriller and fiercely fought over. After 16 racks, the scoreboard displayed 8:8. In the deciding rack, Feijen missed a long pot when he had to cue upon over the 8-ball in order to shoot the cue ball into the 3-ball. He left the 3-ball on the table for Maijd who took his chance and ran the rack to win 9:8 over Feijen. „the Terminator“ still has a chance to stay in the tournament by winning his matches on the loser’s side.

With the world 9-ball championship spots up for grabs and of course the Mosconi team points at stake, the top players are feeling the heat in their quest for glory and it will take a massive performance under these circumstances to prevail. Today, Albin Ouschan has lost big time in his run for a spot in those events since all of his rivals are still in the race for points.

Friday through Sunday, EPBF will show two feature matches LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page. The complete tournament on 20 tables is shown on kozoom.com for premium pass holders.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organised by International Billiard Promotion (IBP).  Play starts Thursday at 09:30 local time, for further information and reference please go to the federation website eurotouronline under the Eurotour tab. Mario He flying the Austrian flag high

Mario He (left) and Mohammed Soufi

The last remaining Austrian at the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2018 is Mario He. He took down Jani Uski (FIN) in the round of the final 32 players with 9:4 and will now face Alexander Kazakis (GRE) in his next match tomorrow morning.

The tournament did not provide a smooth start for Mario He. He lost his opening match yesterday to unheralded Filippo Cataldi (ITA). Since then, he fought his way through the loser’s side and finally booked himself a spot among the last 32 players by winning 9:7 in the loser’s qualification round. His opponent there was – Filippo Cataldi again! Probably a good revenge for Mario He that was. In the next round against Uski, Mario He did not have as many problems as he seemed to have against the Italian and took down Uski easily with 9:4.

Another remarkable achievement so far was done by Mohammed Soufi (SYR). The Syrian currently living in Germany has played some good matches this year already on the Euro-Tour so his opponents could have been on alert. Soufi lost his second match to Marc Bijsterbosch (NED) with 5:9 and then struggled through the loser’s side, taking out David Plattner (SUI) 9:7, Raoul Reichegger (AUT) 9:7 and Miguel Silva (POR) 9:6. In the round of the last 32 players, Soufi encountered „The Maharaja“ Imran Majid (GBR). The match was filled with action and excitement and went over the full distance. At 8:8, Soufi had the break shot and outplayed Majid, making it into the round of the last 16 players tomorrow.

Earlier today, an exciting encounter took place between #1 ranked player Eklent Kaci (ALB) and Joshua Filler (GER) who seems to be on fire throughout the whole year. The story of the first four racks is quickly told: both players committed no mistakes, always had a ball on the break and ran their respective racks so the score was 2:2 after four racks into the match. In rack 5, Filler scratched while breaking and Kaci got ball in hand. Completely unexpected Kaci missed an easy shot on the 5-ball and gave that rack back to Filler. That was an untypical error for Kaci and it was not the last one. In the next rack, Kaci played a good safety shot for the 1-ball and forced Filler to commit a foul which the German did. Then, Kaci again was not able to run the rack. He ran out of position for the 6-ball with only 3 balls left on the table. A safety exchange started with Kaci to be the player in the end who had a clear shot on the 6-ball. Kaci pocketed it and then missed an easy 7-ball with only the 7-ball and the 9-ball left on the table. These kind of errors are completely uncharacteristic for the young Albanian #1 ranked player in Europe. However, Kaci seemed not to be able to find his rhythm against Filler today. Even when Filler himself missed an easy 5-ball leading 7:2, Kaci was not really able to capitalise from the mistake of his opponent. In then end, Filler rightfully took the match with 9:3 and sent Kaci to the loser’s side where Niels Feijen (NED) eliminated Kaci with 9:7.

Friday through Sunday, EPBF will show two feature matches LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page. The complete tournament on 20 tables is shown on kozoom.com for premium pass holders.

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Klagenfurt Open 2018 will continue at 10:00 with matches from the last 16 players single elimination. At 09:00 CET, the women will begin their tournament.

Cohen sneaked past Souquet at Dynamic Billard Austrian Open

Stephan Cohen (left) and Ralf Souquet

In a dramatic winner’s round 1 match at the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open in Alpina Wellness & Sports Hotel, St. Johann i.Pg., Austria, between the two grandmasters Ralf Souquet (GER) and Stephan Cohen (FRA), Cohen remained the upper hand and bested Souquet by a whisker with 9:8.

The first half of the match belonged to Souquet. The German dominated at the table and Cohen struggled to get going. After 13 racks, Souquet was on the hill leading 8:5 over Cohen. At that point in time, the odds for Cohen were close to zero. But Cohen came back.  He took some racks an the pressure was on for Souquet. With Souquet being in the lead 8:6, both players went for a time-out. When they got back to the table, it seemed to have worked better for Cohen. The frenchman took the next two racks and turned the match into a hill-hill thriller at 8:8. Rack 17 was won by Cohen who had managed to turn the tide in the match and performed a marvellous comeback in the tournament. With this victory, Cohen marched on into the next winner’s round where he overpowered Kim Laaksonen (FIN) 9:4. Cohen has booked his seat in the winner’s qualification round while Souquet needs to find his fortune on the loser’s side of the event.

#1 ranked player on the Euro-Tour ranking is currently David Alcaide (ESP). The Spaniard needed to do some serious work today. In his first match, he just made it 9:8 over Miguel Silva (POR). The next round was not easier for the #1 player. He encountered Abdullah Al-Youssef (KUW) and needed another 9:8 victory over the full distance to get his foot in the door of the winner’s qualification round.

Silva’s teammate Joao Grilo (POR) was a bit luckier today. He faced local hero Mario He (AUT) in winner’s round 1 and took the Austrian down unexpectedly clear with 9:4.

Today seemed to be not a good or easy day for the top ranked Euro-Tour players. Alcaide won his two matches with 9:5. #2 ranked player Joshua Filler (GER) lost 8:9 to Sergey Lutsker (RUS). „I did not have a break shot at all“, commented Filler after the match, „my break simply wasn’t there. That was the main reason for my defeat“. Also long time ranking leader and current #3, Mark Gray (GBR) could not make it through the winner’s side today. After defeating Piergiovanni Davy (ITA) 9:1, he fell 8:9 to unheralded Mariusz Skoneczny (POL).

Probably the most surprising comeback of the day was performed by dark horse Thomas Fjaeran (NOR). The Norwegian was trailing 1:8 after 30 minutes to Mieszko Fortunski (POL), the winner of the Dynamic Billard Italian Open in February 2016. Things looked over for Fjaeran. But the Scandinavian hung in there and started his amazing comeback. Never looking back, Fjaeran took it step by step and managed to realise the impossible, winning the match with 9:8 over a devastated Mieszko Fortunski!

Today’s feature match which was broadcasted LIVE on the EPBF Facebook page was the clash in winer’s round 2 between Denis Grabe (EST) and Oliver Ortmann (GER). The match went up and down. In the beginning, Ortmann looked like the clear winner, taking a 4:1 lead after five racks. But grabe came back. Additionally, Ortmann’s break shot left him and no wonder Grabe managed to close the gap and even overtake Ortmann, leading 6:4 after the next five racks. However, Ortmann survived that critical phase and found his game back, taking the next racks and getting on the hill at 8:7. Grabe played a safety in rack 16 which was not good enough for Ortmann. The former World Champion from Germany went ahead and cleared the rack, winning the thrilling match with 9:7 over Denis Grabe.

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open in Alpina Wellness & Sports Hotel, St. Johann i.Pg., Austria, will continue at 09:00 CET with matches from loser’s round 2.

Tkach and Feijen Dethrone the Austrian Superpower Siblings

Niels Feijen and Kristina Tkach

Kristina Tkach (RUS) and Niels Feijen (NED) have just won the gold medals in the straight pool discipline of the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Albufeira, Portugal.

In the men’s division, „The Terminator“ Niels Feijen played an outstanding tournament. Having won the coveted title in straight pool already 5-times before, Feijen really had an incentive this time. His A-status with the Dutch Olympic Committee and therefore the funding for another year was in danger if he would not have made in into the last eight of the event. After having ousted Stephan Cohen (FRA) 125:3 in the round of the last 32 players, he met the defending Champion Albin Ouschan (AUT) in the next round. Ouschan was a very high obstacle that Feijen needed to overcome in order to get into the round of the last 8. But „The Terminator“ stood tall today and took down Ouschan with 125:88 after a firefly fought match. In the quarter-final, Feijen eliminated Jakub Koniar (SVK) with 125:46 without further problems. Even clearer was Feijen’s victory in the semi-final with Kim Laaksonen (FIN). He ousted the Finish player 125:19 and one could witness Feijen’s hunger to grab his 6th title in straight pool growing strong. In the final match, Feijen met Tomasz Kaplan (POL) who has also earned his merits in the past in straight pool. Today, Feijen was too strong for Kaplan. The Dutch turned the final match into a one man show and after one hour and ten minutes, „The Terminator“ sank the final ball for a 125:13 victory over Kaplan, having used only four innings to claim the victory.

In the women’s competition, Kristina Tkach was up against the Austrian title defender, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT). Tkach’s way into the final looked quite impressive. In the round of the last 16 players she bested Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) 75:4. Then she marched on and triumphed clearly over Amalia Matas (ESP) 75:15. In the semi-final match, Tkach got the better of her teammate Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) and remained the upper hand with 75:57. In the final match of course, Jasmin Ouschan was awaiting her. The Austrian title defender started furiously and took a 39:-2 lead over Tkach. But the young Russian remained cool as ice and played her game whenever Ouschan allowed her to do so. And she got more chances than expected. Ouschan committed several serious and avoidable mistakes. Leading 61:45, Tkach missed the break ball and Ouschan got back to an open table. The audience and Ouschan were shocked when the Austrian missed the first clear and easy shot! Tkach thanked her in her own way by running the rack and pocketing the remaining 14 balls in order to win the match and the title 75:45. It’s Tkach’s second title in the women’s division after having won the 8-ball in St. Johann i.Pg, Austria last year.
