2017 Joss Junior 9-Ball Championships Results

Thomas Haas, Jim Romanowski and Brenden Croft

Everyone,

Congratulations to our 2017 Joss Junior 9-Ball Champions, Thomas Haas won the 18 & under division and Zach Hemendinger prevailed in the 12 & under division.

Thomas Haas made it to the finals undefeated rather easily but it was no easy task from there. Canadian Brenden Croft who had lost his first match to last years 12 & under champ Ivo Linkin 9-7, eventually avenged that loss by besting Ivo 9-8 to make it to the finals. As the event was played just like our regular Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour events, it was true double elimination in the finals. Brenden, with the momentum on his side took the first set 9-5 forcing another to determine the winner. Thomas was not deterred however and came back strong for the win by a 9-4 margin. Great play was witnessed by all of the 18 & under players and you will definitely be seeing their names rising to the top soon.

In the 12 & under division, it was Zach Hemendinger prevailing over Kailey Bombard 7-4. This division had a small field and it was decided to play a round robin format followed by single elimination. Each play had a chance to play every other player at least once until the single elimination rounds. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day playing some pool.

I would once again like to thank the many people and companies who generously donated products and their time to help. I would like to acknowledge and thank them all as it is because of them that each participant received some of their items. There were also 6 free raffles for the players for the larger items. Our generous sponsors were, in no particular order: Sharp Shooters Billiards & Sports Pub (Tim & Julie Berlin, owners), Dan, Debbie & Stephen Janes (Joss Cues), James Sinclair (Rhythm Custom Cues), CJ & Peggi Wilkinson (Baltimore City Cues), Don Kerns, Iwan Simonis, Aramith, Bruce Barthelette, Phil Capelle (Billiards Press), Mark Kulungian, Steve Lillis, Andrea Duvall, Matt Tetreault & John Babravich (RIP). A special thanks to Mike Renshaw & Jim Romanowski for filling in for me as I was unable to attend due to health reasons. And thank you to everyone else, who was involved.

Our next regular season event will be Nov 4 & 5 at Hippo's The House Of Billiards for the "Al Conte Memorial". Also, I am currently taking entries for our $25,000 Added, "Turning Stone Classic XXIX 9-Ball Open" to be held on January 4-7, 2018. The event is now over 1/2 full so I suggest contacting me soon if you would like to enter this BCA, WPA, Mosconi Cup ranking event. I can be reached by calling 518-356-7163.

Thank You,

Tanner stops loss-side challenge by Davis to win Dishaw Custom Cues CNY Tour

It’s rare when opponents facing each other in an opening round of tournament play, face each other a second time in the event finals. That, however, is just what happened at the Dishaw Custom Cues CNY Tour stop on Saturday, March 17. Adam Tanner, a double-A player, sent Tim Davis, a B+, to the loss side 8-4 in the opening round, and met him again in a true double elimination final. Tanner won two of their three matches to take top honors in the event, which had drawn 15 entrants to Premium Billiards in Syracuse, NY.

Having dispatched Davis to the loss side, Tanner advanced among the winners’ side final four to to face another B+ player, Mike Zarelli. Marko Clark, in the meantime, squared off against Adam Osborne. Tanner got into the hot seat match with an 8-4 victory over Zarelli, and was met by Clarke, who’d defeated Osborne 7-4. Tanner got into the hot seat with an 8-5 win.

Meanwhile, Davis was embarked on a six-match, loss-side winning streak that would give him a second chance against Tanner. He got by two A players, Bobby Schroeter 6-6 and Gary Lloyd 6-2 to meet up with Osborne. Zarelli drew Lance Kellogg, who’d defeated Mike Renshaw 6-6 and Travis Salvetti 7-1. In the all B+ battle to determine the tie for fifth place, Davis and Kellogg defeated Osborne and Zarelli; Davis 6-3 over Osborne and Kellogg 6-1 over Zarelli.

Davis chalked up his fifth loss-side match with a 6-3 victory over Kellogg in the B+ quarterfinal match. A 6-5 victory over Clarke in the semifinals (Clarke needing 7), set up the true double elimination final re-match.

Davis battled to double hill in the opening set, and prevailed to force a second. Tanner, though, gave up only a single rack in the deciding second set, winning 8-1 to secure the event title.

Tour director Gary Lloyd thanked the ownership and staff of Premium Billiards for their hospitality, as well as sponsors Dishaw Custom Cues, Cue Shark, TotalPoolInfo, and Custom Logo USA.

Manzi and Solve split top prizes on Western New York Tour

In a newly-renovated Premium Billiards in Syracuse, NY, Rick Manzi and Travis Solve (pronounced sol-vay) opted out of a second set in a true double elimination final and with one loss apiece on the day, chose to split the top two (and only) prizes. The $150-added event, held on Sunday, January 8, drew 10 entrants.

They met first in the battle for the hot seat, after Manzi had downed Thomas Bergen 5-4 and Solve had sent Dave Landon west 5-3. In the first of their two matches, Solve gained the hot seat with a 5-3 victory.

Over on the limited loss side, Roger Jackson and Kyle Racka were eliminated, leaving tour director Nick Brucato to face Mike Renshaw, and Jerry Sullivan squaring off against Dave Brobeck. Sullivan won a forfeit victory over Brobeck to pick up Landon, while Renshaw defeated Brucato 6-5 to draw Bergen.

It was Bergen and Landon advancing to the quarterfinals; Bergen with a 6-5 win over Renshaw, Landon with a 5-2 victory over Sullivan. Bergen then survived a double hill quarterfinal battle against Landon and then, was himself defeated in a double hill semifinal by Manzi.

Manzi evened his match score versus Solve with a 5-2 win in the opening set of what was to have been a true double elimination final. At that point, the two opted to forego a second set, leave their match score tied at 1-1 and split the top two prizes. Manzi earned a free entry to the tour’s next stop, scheduled for January 15 at Six Pockets in Rochester, NY.

Duly impressed with the venue’s recent renovations, and looking forward to scheduling further stops on the tour there, tour director Nick Brucato thanked  Premium Billiards owner Frank Wollack for his hospitality.
