Li goes undefeated to win her second 2017 J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour stop

Jia Li

Jia Li made her second appearance on the 2017 J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour (JPNEWT) on the weekend of October 14-15, and as she did in her first appearance in August, she won the event. In August, she had to negotiate three matches on the loss side before meeting and defeating hot seat occupant, Caroline Pao. At this most recent stop, she went undefeated, downing separate opponents in the hot seat match and finals. The $1,000-added event drew 16 entrants to Eagle Billiards in Dickson City, PA.

Following victories over Amanda Soucy 7-3, and Chari Slater 7-1, Jia Li moved into a winners’ side semifinal against the tour’s #1-ranked player, Linda Shea. Kia Sidbury, in the meantime, having defeated Morgan Steinman 7-3 and Colleen Shoop 7-2, moved on to face Melissa Jenkins in the other winners’ side semifinal. Li gave up only a single rack to Shea and advanced to the hot seat match. She was joined by Sidbury, who’d sent Jenkins to the loss side 7-4. Li claimed the hot seat 7-2 over Sidbury and waited for Shea to get back from her three-match trek on the loss side.

Shea opened her loss side campaign against Soucy, who, after being sent over by Li, defeated Judie Wilson 7-5, Shoop 7-4, and Elaine Wilson 7-2. Jenkins picked up Erica Testa, who’d been sent to the loss side by Shea and defeated Carol V. Clark 7-1 and Morgan Steinman 7-5.

Shea defeated Soucy 7-1, as Jenkins was eliminating Testa 7-3. Shea took the quarterfinal match over Jenkins 7-2, and then earned her re-match against Li, while denying Sidbury hers, with a 7-4 win in the semifinals. Li, though, completed her undefeated run with a 7-2 win over Shea in the finals.

The next stop on the JPNEWT will be the tour’s season finale. Scheduled for November 18-19, it will be hosted by Triple Nines Bar & Billiards in Elkridge, MD.

Corr wins sixth straight on the JPNEWT

Karen Corr

Since March, Karen Corr has allowed opponents on the J. Pechauer Northeast 9-Ball an (unscientific) average of between two and three racks in match races to seven. Until two weeks ago, and on the weekend of August 1-2, only one opponent had chalked up more than four against her. China's Jia Li, the two-year reigning champion of the WPBA's Regional Tour Championships,  pushed Corr to the double hill limit in the second round of the tour's fifth stop (July 18-19). Though she would go on to win six on the loss side, Li was defeated by tour director Linda Shea and denied a second shot at Corr.

On the weekend of August 1-2, in a $2,000-added event, hosted by Raxx Billiards in West Hempstead, NY (24 entrants), Li fought back through five matches on the loss side to face Corr in the finals. Corr won it to chalk up her sixth straight on the tour, but not before Li had brought her to the brink in their race to nine.

Corr gave up only seven racks over four games to get into the hot seat; starting with Borana Andoni (2), Fran Crimi (1), and, in a winners' side semifinal, Kia Sidbury (3). Briana Miller, in the meantime, having sent Jia Li to the loss side, double hill, in the third round, was giving up an average of three racks per game, and gave up just that many to Morgan Steinman in the other winners' side semifinal. Corr then sent Miller packing 7-1 and sat in the hot seat, waiting for Jia Li.

Li, in the meantime, started out in cruise control on the loss side, defeating Borana Andoni and Linda Shea by an aggregate score of 14-3 (all three to Andoni). She drew Sidbury, while Steinman drew Fran Crimi, who was coming off her own loss-side, cruise control performance 14-2 against Tina Scott and Nancy Kim (with the two).

Li's cruise control continued with a 7-1 victory over Sidbury. Crimi's came to a stop with a shutout by Steinman. Li's final two loss-side opponents tightened the screws a little bit. She gave up five racks to Steinman in the quarterfinals that followed,  and then, Miller, for the second time this season, challenged her in the semifinals. Back in June, Miller had defeated Li 7-5 in the semifinals. This time, they hit double hill before Li prevailed for a shot at Corr.

It was the closest anybody had come to dethroning the undisputed 'queen' of the JPNEWT. But Corr held off a double hill challenge by Li to lock up her 6th win on the tour, her 11th, overall in two years.

Defending Champion Allison Fisher Heading to the WPBA US Open Finals

Allison Fisher

TULSA, OK – Results are in for today’s first semi-final matchup between the #1 and #2 seeds in the WPBA US Open 9-Ball Championships taking place this week at the River Spirit Event Center. ESPN cameras rolled as Monica Webb and Allison Fisher, two veteran champions, took the stage.

Monica took the first point in the race to seven, but Allison quickly answered with two games of her own. Monica won the next three to lead 4-2. In the seventh game, Allison missed a surprising five ball in the corner that put Webb back at the table to extend her lead 5-2.

Allison picked up the next game to trail 5-3, and then another to trail 5-4 when Monica ended up short on a nine ball and missed a cross-side bank. She then broke and ran out to tie the match 5-5, and again to get to the hill, 6-5!

With no shot after the break, Fisher was forced to push out. A safety battle ensued but Fisher got first look at a long, sharp cut on the one. She nailed that, and proceeded to execute a tricky rack to take the win 7-5! Webb finishes tied for third place.

Next up: Gerda Hofstatter plays Jeanette Lee at 3 p.m. to determine who will face Fisher in the finals.

The quarter final, semi final and final matches will be broadcast by ESPN in seven one-hour national shows, airing Saturday, July 14, (Quarterfinals 12-4pm on ESPN2) and Sunday, July 15, (Semifinals/Final 1-4pm on ESPN2).
