Taiwanese Sending 44 Bets to World Pool Qualifiers

MANILA, PHILIPPINES---With eight bets already qualified for the World Pool Championship in November, Chinese Taipei is sending 44 more players to the WPC qualifiers set to start on October 27.

The Chinese Taipei Pocket Billiards Association (CTPBA) registered all 52 players with Raya Sports the other day, along with booking their hotel reservations, to ensure their participation in the event.

The WPC qualifiers will be staged at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City, and will run for five days from Oct. 27 to 31. At present, there are 10 spots up for competition in the qualifying tournament.

Among the prominent Taiwanese players registered are Hung-Hsiang Wang, Kun-Fang Lee, and three-time world junior champion Yu-Lun Wu.

Chinese Taipei has won the world title three times – twice courtesy of Fong-Pang Chao and once by Chia-Ching Wu, the 2005 world champion.

The Philippines has won the title three times likewise, courtesy of Efren Reyes (1999), Alex Pagulayan (2004), and Ronnie Alcano (2006).

Entries to the qualifiers have been pouring in lately with just over three weeks to go before the deadline. Among the players already registered are seven Vietnamese, five Singaporeans, three Chinese, and 11 Filipinos.

The 2007 World Pool Championship will be staged at the Araneta Coliseum on November 3-11. The event is jointly presented by San Miguel Corporation and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

The WPC will be staged by Matchroom Sport of the UK and broadcast by ESPN-Star Sports. Raya Sports is the Philippine organizer of the tournament.
