Varner Finally Snaps Off Senior One Pocket

Nick Varner, Bogies Owner Cody Parish and Mark Dimick

The Eighth Annual Senior One Pocket Championship was held this past weekend at Bogies in Houston, TX. Owner Cody Parish and his staff welcomed players and fans back to Bogies. Immediate Smiles, PoolActionTV.com & Bogies added $5,000 to this double elimination event.

To qualify for this event, players had to turn 65 before the end of this year. They came from around the country and a full field of 32 players ponied up their $200 entry fees. Races were to four on the winners side and to three on the one loss side – finals were true double elimination.

Returning players included Jerry Matchin, Scott Kitto, James Davis Sr., John Di Toro, Sammy Jones, Mark Dimick and Joey Aguzin. Making their first appearance was BCA and One Pocket Hall of Famer Jose Parica, the legendary David Matlock and Houston area straight shooter Tommy Sanders.

Missing were Billy Incardona, Bob Ogburn, James Christopher and John Henderson – all fighting health battles. Also missing was Mouise Pouncey (“Gabby”) who passed away earlier this year.

After the players meeting on Thursday night and in a repeat of last year’s players auction, defending champ Ronnie Wiseman was the first blind bid followed by BCA, One Pocket and Bank Pool Hall of Famer, Nick Varner. After completing the players auction, players drew cards and one round of play began.

First round action saw two former champs unceremoniously kicked over to the west side – Kitto over Wiseman and Varner over Davis, Sr. Second round action saw no real surprises but Varner and Parica battled down to the wire in an eight hour marathon. Nick took the win. Dimick and Jones also took it to the case game with Mark sending Sammy to the one loss side.

This left four players undefeated – Varner beat Matchin and Dimick defeated Aguzin. Nick and Mark moved into the hot seat match while their opponents struggled to emerge out of the pack.

The hot seat match began and it was fought tooth and nail. Dimick was playing great pool and he certainly needed to! When it was all over, Mark emerged the victor and sent Nick west to await an opponent.

James Davis, Sr., Jerry Matchin and Sammy Jones were the predictable survivors and it was Jerry who ended up facing Nick. Nick took dead aim, won the match and returned to the finals.

Although Nick won the first set 4-0 and the second 3-0, it was a lot closer than the scores indicated. This title had escaped Varner repeatedly and he wasn’t going to let it get away from him again!
