WPA Announces Details of Thorpe Suspension

Billy Thorpe

The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) has released their decision regarding the ban of Billy Thorpe in WPA events.

A decision was made on May 31st, 2022 by the Disciplinary Panel of the Polish Anti-Doping Agency that US player Billy Thorpe has been considered guilty of having the presence of a prohibited substance in his body at the time of a random drug test during competition. Mr Thorpe is therefore ineligible for participation in events until 31st August 2022.

This ban includes any official event that is sanctioned or conducted by the WPA or any WPA Member or Affiliate. This will include the upcoming Matchroom European Open and Predator Canada Open.

  1. No argument there, WADA is there for a reason.

I wonder if Matchroom will double dip like they did with Darren Appleton and ban him from their events as well.
  2. They held him hostage in limbo for over a year without due process. He complied the entire time. And now they detail his ban?!? He deserved recognition for time served. I’m ready to burn down the WPA for this circus.

Compare it to Mario He’s suspension and you know this is a travesty of ineptitude and bureaucracy.

I no longer care about the Olympics. I don’t care about the World Games. I don’t care if some international players get monetary funding from competing in officially sanctioned events or under sanctioned federations. Torch it it all.

If they can’t use common sense then they just aren’t worth it.

Hear, hear. I agree 100 percent.
  4. But the ban is only for 2 months until August? I don't think he will miss anything except the European open? Perhaps this is a win for Billy?
He's already been banned for a long time. I think that date might be the end of what would have been a 2-year ban.

He didn't play for several months but recently was back in action at several Matchroom events.
  6. Ha, I bet every other basketball player smokes weed. How the hell are they in the Olympics? Legalize everything under the sun and get rid of this bs. Let the chips fall where they may.
  7. Oh my it's 2022 not the dark ages.

The dark ages is the last time any of the WCBS board members played pool based on their biographical information. Not sure they are the correct group to be leading Billiards in the 21st century. WCBS is responsible for all the Olympic nonsense in pool.
  8. Disciplinary Panel of the Polish Anti-Doping Agency??? Is it the proper authrity to consider a WPA player guilty and make a decision? To me, an anti-doping lab could only provide the results to the WPA, and any decisions should be made by them based on what they have.

    I bet not.
